The application of Internet technologies towards distance education is widely discussed in the literature. This case applies Porter’s “added value” theory relating to the use of IT to the application of Internet technologies used as a supplement to traditional classroom subject delivery. Most of the reported advantages of this type from online course and subject delivery relate to cost savings in terms of efficiency, flexibility and/or convenience for the students. The case study examines a range of subjects taught in the School of Information Systems at Victoria University, Australia. Each subject uses Internet technologies for different “added value” benefits. Subject coordinators comment upon the use of the Internet technologies for both academic and administrative aspects. Students are surveyed to determine the value of Internet technologies from their perspective. Student responses indicated the applications were perceived to beat least “useful,” and findings supported Porter’s theory. The challenge for the faculty is to demonstrate the “business” benefits to faculty staff of adopting Internet technology for teaching. The case studies have shown that the use of Internet technologies by students seems to be higher where the coordinator actively encourages it.

The article proposes a study of strategies for forming the image of politicians through Internet technologies. The main existing methodological approaches to studying the issues of forming a political image using modern information technologies are considered. A typology of strategies for the formation of a politician's image on the Internet is proposed, based on the priority of using the Internet. The strategies of preferential and auxiliary use of the Internet and new information technologies for the formation of the image of a politician are characterized. The strategy of the predominant use of Internet technologies for the formation of the image turns out to be the most promising for opposition politicians. Incumbents and representatives of the ruling party are interested in more diversified approaches to the formation of a political image and are using a strategy of auxiliary use of Internet resources. The degree of importance of new information technologies in solving problems of forming and promoting a political image depends, inter alia, on the political guidelines of the audience. The question of the applicability of a common typology of strategies for the formation of a political image to the process of forming a political image on the Internet is considered. The issue of measuring the effectiveness of individual strategies for the formation of a political image on the Internet remains insufficiently studied in modern science.

From a business perspective, the Dot.Com debacle of the late 1990s and early 2000s reinforced the need for good business planning and strategising, a clear requirement to be flexible and capable of almost constant change, a need to focus on creating added value and sustainable competitive advantage through the use of innovative ideas, strategies and tools – and finally, it focused attention on learning to harness the opportunities and minimise the problems associated with doing business in an electronic age. The case study outlined in this paper looks at the “What”, “Why” and “How” of doing business electronically in a traditional Queensland-based agri-industry – the Peanut Industry. The investigation found that the use of internet-enabled business practices between members of the industry value chain is increasing rapidly and is gaining respect as a means of improving efficiencies and productivity. It also found that if an entity in the value chain begins to do business electronically, other companies in that chain will need to follow suit or risk being substituted. In the longer term, it is likely that the drive for electronically enabled business practices will come from the larger food processing organisations, not only on the premise of improved internal efficiencies, but also because of increasingly tough food safety and quality assurance requirements that are prompting the need for real time quality information and decision support for product tracking back to source. Finally, conclusions are drawn for Smart State initiatives and for ‘smart’ practices in agri-business.

Electronic commerce is important, and perhaps, inevitable. Thus to consider the legal implications of the growth and development of electronic commerce is essential. However, the lack of suitable dispute resolution mechanisms in cyberspace will constitute a serious obstacle to the further development of electronic commerce. Bearing this in mind, this paper argues that when Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) moves to cyberspace, particularly arbitration and mediation as the main types of ADR, the form of online alternative dispute resolution (OADR) can maximise the growth of e-commerce.Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and the internet are two very topical issues. Online alternative dispute resolution (OADR), or ADR online, refers to the use of internet technology, wholly or partially, as a medium by which to conduct the proceedings of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), in order to resolve commercial disputes which arise from the use of the internet. Those proceedings are operated by neutral private bodies under published rules of procedure.Having said that, it is important to address mandatory OADR. This means that the parties are bound to adhere to the OADR process. Indeed, it is imperative to display what risks internet users should be willing to take with mandatory OADR schemes. This paper concludes that the issue of consent should be at the forefront of any contemplated OADR solutions. Clearly, it is unacceptable to impose mandatory OADR on internet users without their knowledge and consent Instead, a complainant who wishes to avoid the mandatory nature of OADR proceeding must be able to bring the action in any court that has a jurisdiction over the dispute. Bearing this in mind, there is a strong reason to believe that mandatory OADR schemes would not be enforceable in courts, and that the entire scheme of mandatory OADR might be unworkable.
