Wireless Peer-to-Peer Media Streaming

The widespread deployment of competing wireless technologies has created new research opportunities. In particular, the authors consider media streaming in hybrid wireless networks where each mobile device is equipped with two wireless network interfaces: server interface and peer interface. The server interface connects wireless clients to the server while the peer interface allows neighboring clients to communicate with one another. The two interfaces have different energy characteristics. In this chapter, the authors first give a brief account of P2P media streaming in wireless operating environments. They then survey and analyze the current state-of-the-art in tackling the security and performance issues in P2P media streaming systems. In view of the deficiencies of the existing approaches, they introduce new approaches based on game theoretic concepts. Specifically, the authors propose two collaborating relationships in which neighboring clients utilize both interfaces to share the energy cost of retrieving media content from the server. Their results show that the proposed relationships improve the streaming performance of peers without violating their energy consumption constraints. Moreover, both relationships are stable when clients neither unilaterally deviate nor voluntarily leave as a group.

The small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial part in county’s economic growth and a key contributor in country’s GDP. In Pakistan SMEs hold about 90 percent of the total businesses. The performance of SMEs depends upon many factors. The main aim for the research is to examine the relationship between Innovation Capability, Absorptive Capacity and Performance of SMEs in Pakistan. This conceptual paper also extends to the vague revelation on Business Strategy in which act as a moderator between Innovation Capability, Absorptive Capacity and SMEs Performance. Conclusively, this study proposes a new research directions and hypotheses development to examine the relationship among the variables in Pakistan’s SMEs context.

This paper aims at providing an overview on the current state of the art and on possible future developments concerning the component method implementation for the classification of beam-to-column joints belonging to aluminum moment resisting frames.After a brief discussion on the component method theoretical bases, developed in the past to give a feasible calculation procedure for steel joints, recent experimental and numerical studies, carried out for investigating some aluminum components, are presented and discussed. In particular strengths and weaknesses of the current knowledge are put into evidence, also in light of the peculiarities that make aluminum alloys different from steel. The launch of new research fields, aimed at pursuing an update of the current codes dealing with aluminum structures, is therefore proposed.

PurposeThis paper aims to discuss the role of open-book accounting (OBA) and trust on buyer–supplier relationship satisfaction. The objective of this paper is to analyze how OBA and trust influence satisfaction on the relationship between suppliers and buyers in the Brazilian automotive sector’s supply chain.Design/methodology/approachThe research has been developed based on a qualitative strategy, characterized as explanatory. Data gathering has been conducted through document analysis and semi-structured interview, and content analysis has been used for discourse analysis.FindingsResults show that OBA is unilateral, imposed by the auto manufacturer, representing a selective information process, as suppliers try to protect their information value as far as possible. Trust is partial and cooperation is not spontaneous, both driven by the search for benefits. OBA may yield a positive or a negative outcome with regard to the social and the economic overall satisfaction of suppliers, depending on how the information is used by auto manufacturer.Originality/valueThe main contribution of this article is to provide an understanding of the difficulties of applying the OBA in companies and of the factors that may influence its operation and performance, impacting on satisfaction and continuity of relationships. The paper also contributes with the proposal of a clearer and more objective definition of OBA. Being the intention that new research in this area can be developed from a delimited, clear and objective definition of OBA, allowing better understanding on the subject and comparison among research studies.

AbstractBackgroundTo assign structural and functional annotations to the ever increasing amount of sequenced proteins, the main approach relies on sequence-based homology search methods, e.g. BLAST or the current state-of-the-art methods based on profile Hidden Markov Models (pHMM), which rely on significant alignments of query sequences to annotated proteins or protein families. While powerful, these approaches do not take coevolution between residues into account. Taking advantage of recent advances in the field of contact prediction, we propose here to represent proteins by Potts models, which model direct couplings between positions in addition to positional composition, and to compare proteins by aligning these models. Due to non-local dependencies, the problem of aligning Potts models is hard and remains the main computational bottleneck for their use.ResultsWe introduce here an Integer Linear Programming formulation of the problem and PPalign, a program based on this formulation, to compute the optimal pairwise alignment of Potts models representing proteins in tractable time. The approach is assessed with respect to a non-redundant set of reference pairwise sequence alignments from SISYPHUS benchmark which have lowest sequence identity (between 3% and 20%) and enable to build reliable Potts models for each sequence to be aligned. This experimentation confirms that Potts models can be aligned in reasonable time (1′37″ in average on these alignments). The contribution of couplings is evaluated in comparison with HHalign and PPalign without couplings. Although Potts models were not fully optimized for alignment purposes and simple gap scores were used, PPalign yields a better mean F1 score and finds significantly better alignments than HHalign and PPalign without couplings in some cases.ConclusionsThese results show that pairwise couplings from protein Potts models can be used to improve the alignment of remotely related protein sequences in tractable time. Our experimentation suggests yet that new research on the inference of Potts models is now needed to make them more comparable and suitable for homology search. We think that PPalign’s guaranteed optimality will be a powerful asset to perform unbiased investigations in this direction.

New research into human-computer interaction seeks to consider the consumer's emotional status to provide a seamless human-computer interface. This would make it possible for people to survive and be used in widespread fields, including education and medicine. Multiple techniques can be defined through human feelings, including expressions, facial images, physiological signs, and neuroimaging strategies. This paper presents a review of emotional recognition of multimodal signals using deep learning and comparing their applications based on current studies. Multimodal affective computing systems are studied alongside unimodal solutions as they offer higher accuracy of classification. Accuracy varies according to the number of emotions observed, features extracted, classification system and database consistency. Numerous theories on the methodology of emotional detection and recent emotional science address the following topics. This would encourage studies to understand better physiological signals of the current state of the science and its emotional awareness problems.

Recent research on Convolutional Neural Networks focuses on how to create models with a reduced number of parameters and a smaller storage size while keeping the model’s ability to perform its task, allowing the use of the best CNN for automating tasks in limited devices, with reduced processing power, memory, or energy consumption constraints. There are many different approaches in the literature: removing parameters, reduction of the floating-point precision, creating smaller models that mimic larger models, neural architecture search (NAS), etc. With all those possibilities, it is challenging to say which approach provides a better trade-off between model reduction and performance, due to the difference between the approaches, their respective models, the benchmark datasets, or variations in training details. Therefore, this article contributes to the literature by comparing three state-of-the-art model compression approaches to reduce a well-known convolutional approach for object detection, namely YOLOv3. Our experimental analysis shows that it is possible to create a reduced version of YOLOv3 with 90% fewer parameters and still outperform the original model by pruning parameters. We also create models that require only 0.43% of the original model’s inference effort.


The purpose of this paper is to provide a more realistic competitive advantage concept in order to investigate the impact of an innovative mindset, behaviour and performance on Halal SME’s competitive advantage in the context of a challenging worldwide Halal’s market. This study uses an constant methodology by outlining, analysing, arranging, and focusing the current state of the literature and proposes a research framework which assist in overcoming the restraints encountered in previous empirical research. The use of an innovative mindset and behaviour enables the researchers to provide a great explanation of a innovative performance and its relationship to competitive advantage. This study seeks to contribute to the practice of competitiveness of Halal SMEs area of research. Specifically, this study emphasises that Halal SMEs owner-managers should have innovative mindsets that can stimulate innovative behaviour and which can be translated into innovation performance and subsequently competitive advantage.

Strengthening historical buildings and evaluating their performances make great contributions to both the history of the country and the tourism of the country. In this study, performance analysis and evaluations of the historical cinema hall balcony, which was built in 1933 by a French company and served to Zonguldak province for a long time, are presented in detail. This cinema hall was frequently used by local people between 1933 and 1999 and hosted many Yeşilçam movies. Firstly, examinations were performed in the historical cinema hall and the areas (columns, beams and floors) that were damaged in time were identified. According to the obtained information, it was determined that there were significant damages in the carrier system of the building and there were visible cracks and damages in the columns of the cinema hall. It was also observed that explosions occurred in one of the main carrier columns of the balcony. After the core samples taken from the balcony were tested in the laboratory, the current status of the carrier elements and reinforcements were determined with the help of an x-ray rebar scanner. After all these processes, the structure was modeled as three dimensional (3D) using a special computer program and performance evaluations were performed regarding the current state of the structure. As a result of the performance evaluation, it was determined that the balcony of the historical cinema hall could not survive anymore and would collapse over time. It was concluded that there were great damages especially on the balcony columns and a reinforcement should be made on a total of 6 columns. Strengthening was made to 4 different main columns and a performance analysis was performed again in strengthened structure. After strengthening, it was understood that the columns of the balcony of the cinema hall could survive for a long time.
