Measuring and Dealing with the Uncertainty of SOA Solutions

The chapter investigates the uncertainty of Web Services performance and the instability of their communication medium (the Internet), and shows the influence of these two factors on the overall dependability of SOA. We present our practical experience in benchmarking and measuring the behaviour of a number of existing Web Services used in e-science and bio-informatics, provide the results of statistical data analysis and discuss the probability distribution of delays contributing to the Web Services response time. The ratio between delay standard deviation and its average value is introduced to measure the performance uncertainty of a Web Service. Finally, we present the results of error and fault injection into Web Services. We summarise our experiments with SOA-specific exception handling features provided by two web service development kits and analyse exception propagation and performance as the major factors affecting fault tolerance (in particular, error handling and fault diagnosis) in Web Services.

The objective of this study is to identify the major factors that impact on the quality of financial reporting and to suggest model of the factors affecting on the quality of financial reporting for Vietnamese enterprises . There are two factors group affecting on the quality of financial reporting: internal factors and external factors, this study is limited to the scope of the external factors. By using case studies, analytical results indicate that Tax Pressure factor has the greatest impact on the quality of financial reporting, the remaning factors include: Listed Securities, Accounting Software and Independent Audit. Two factors, Politics and Regulatory Environment have limited impact on the quality financial reporting.

Communication between heterogeneous systems is difficult to be achieved without affecting the existing systems in Enterprise Application Integration. A kind of dynamic web services publishing software based on CXF is proposed in this paper. The purpose of this software are twofold. Firstly, it encapsulates specified data called by other systems into web service published dynamically which unifies customization among heterogeneous systems. Secondly, the function of service monitoring provided allows users to get the real-time information of published web services. The proposal software has been deployed in a Chinese large-scale military enterprise. Practice in the enterprise shows that the software can simplify web service development, quickly build a web service which encapsulates large amounts of data, and achieve information sharing within the enterprise environment.

Workflow-based web service compositions (WB-WSCs) is one of the main composition categories in service oriented architecture (SOA). Eflow, polymorphic process model (PPM), and business process execution language (BPEL) are the main techniques of the category of WB-WSCs. Due to maturity of web services, measuring the quality of composite web services being developed by different techniques becomes one of the most important challenges in today’s web environments. Business should try to provide good quality regarding the customers’ requirements to a composed web service. Thus, quality of service (QoS) which refers to nonfunctional parameters is important to be measured since the quality degree of a certain web service composition could be achieved. This paper tried to find a deterministic analytical method for dependability and performance measurement using Colored Petri net (CPN) with explicit routing constructs and application of theory of probability. A computer tool called WSET was also developed for modeling and supporting QoS measurement through simulation.

AbstractBackgroundVirtual reality (VR)–based rehabilitation is gaining attention as a way to promote early mobilization in patients with acute stroke. However, given the motor weakness and cognitive impairment associated with acute stroke, implementation strategies for overcoming patient-perceived difficulty need to be developed to enhance their motivation for training.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to explore patient-perceived difficulty and enjoyment during VR-based rehabilitation and the factors affecting those experiences.DesignAn exploratory mixed-method design was used in this study.MethodsEight individuals with acute stroke participated in 2 training modes of VR-based rehabilitation (ie, workout and game modes) 20 to 30 minutes per day for 5 to 8 sessions. A visual analog scale was used to assess patient-perceived difficulty and enjoyment at every session. Then semistructured interviews were conducted to explore the factors affecting those experiences.ResultsLevels of difficulty and enjoyment varied depending on the training mode and participants' phases of recovery. Five major factors were identified as affecting those varied experiences: (1) ease of following the directions, (2) experience of pain, (3) scores achieved, (4) novelty and immediate feedback, and (5) self-perceived effectiveness.ConclusionsLevels of difficulty and enjoyment during VR-based rehabilitation differed depending on the phases of recovery and training mode. Therefore, graded implementation strategies for VR-based rehabilitation are necessary for overcoming patient-perceived difficulty and enhancing enjoyment. Ease of following the directions might be best considered in the very early stage, whereas multisensory feedback may be more necessary in the later stage. Health professionals also should find a way for patients to avoid pain during training. Feedback, such as knowledge of results and performance, should be used appropriately.

This chapter presents the framework for agent-enabled dynamic composition of Semantic Web services. The approach and the framework have been developed in several research and development projects by ISRG and IOG. The core of the methodology is the new understanding of a Semantic Web service as a capability of an intelligent software agent supplied with the proper ontological description. It is demonstrated how diverse Web services may be composed and mediated by dynamic coalitions of software agents collaboratively performing tasks for service requestors. Middle agent layer is introduced to conduct the transformation of a Web service request to the corresponding task, agent-enabled cooperative task decomposition and performance. Discussed are the formal means to arrange agents’ negotiation, to represent the semantic structure of task-activity-service hierarchy and to assess fellow-agents’ capabilities and credibility factors. It is argued that the presented technique is applicable to various application domains. Presented is the ongoing work on designing and implementing agent-based layered architecture for intelligent rational information and document retrieval. Finally, the discussion of the OntoServ.Net framework for the development of P2P mobile service infrastructures for industrial asset management provides the extension of the Web service composition approach.

The paper presents an optimal design of steel curved roof frames with its roof being part of a circular arc. The elements of frames are tapered I-section members. In the objective function for optimization, two factors affecting the weight of frames are considered simultaneously. First, the roof slope angle as an effective variable on the values of the structural loading and second, the cross-section of members that are considered as continuous and discrete variables, respectively. In the range of 3 to 70 degrees, the optimum range of roof slope angles for steel curved roof frames, as well as precise value of the best roof slope angle, will be reported. Enhanced Vibrating Particles System (EVPS) algorithm is utilized for the optimal design of steel curved roof frames with tapered members. The performance and efficiency of the EVPS algorithm is compared with six other recently developed optimization algorithms including VPS, GWO, HS, SSA, ECBO and GOA algorithms. The effectiveness and performance of EVPS algorithm is proven. Frames design are performed using ANSI/AISC 360-05 specifications which strength, displacement and stability constraints are imposed on the frames.

The Web service domain is a fast growing and fast changing environment. From a business perspective, the trend over the last few years in the Web services area firmly points toward seamless business logic integration and inter-enterprise collaboration. However, in order to accomplish such goals, both technological and conceptual advances are required. Some already have proven their viability, others still have to be made. Among them, Web service orchestration and choreography are of crucial importance, but still lack a widely agreed on development framework comprising both technological and conceptual aspects. In this paper we try to provide a critical snapshot of current standards for Web service development and particularly we focus on Web service orchestration and choreography. We discuss problems and solutions from a conceptual point of view, exemplify the illustrated ideas by means of real-world technologies and standards and highlight the mutual dependencies that exist among orchestration and choreography of Web services.

The purpose of this study was to determine the most dominant factors affecting employee work productivity in Carita District, Pandeglang Regency during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The data collection method used in this research is the questionnaire method, while the analysis method uses a Likert scale and rating scale. Of the three factors that affect Employee Work Productivity in Carita Subdistrict, Pandeglang Regency during the Covid-19 Pandemic, namely Education and Training received perceptions from respondents with agreed criteria, while Motivation received perceptions from respondents with strongly agree criteria meaning that these three factors affect employee work productivity. The most dominant factor influencing Employee Work Productivity in Carita Subdistrict, Pandeglang Regency during the Covid-19 Pandemic is Motivation, because it has the highest average value among the other two factors, namely 175.5, this shows that motivation has an important role and is a condition self-directed employees to achieve organizational goals

Web service development is encouraging scenarios where individual or integrated application services can be seamlessly and securely published on the Web without the need to expose their implementation details. However, as Web services proliferate, it becomes difficult to matchmake and integrate them in response to users requests. The goal of our research is to investigate the utilization of the Semantic Web in building a developer-transparent framework facilitating the automatic discovery and composition of Web services. In this chapter, we present a Semantic Case Based Reasoner (SCBR) framework that utilizes the case based reasoning methodology for modelling dynamic Web service discovery and composition. Our approach is original as it considers the runtime behaviour of a service resulting from its execution. Moreover, we demonstrate that the accuracy of automatic matchmaking of Web services can be further improved by taking into account the adequacy of past matchmaking experiences for the requested task. To facilitate Web services composition, we extend our fundamental discovery and matchmaking algorithm using a light-weight knowledge-based substitution approach to adapt the candidate service experiences to the requested solution before suggesting more complex and computationally taxing AI-based planning-based transformations. The inconsistency problem that occurs while adapting existing service composition solutions is addressed with a novel methodology based on the Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP).

In secure web application development, the role of web services will not continue if it is not trustworthy. Retaining customers with applications is one of the major challenges if the services are not reliable and trustworthy. This article proposes a trust evaluation and decision model where the authors have defined indirect attribute, trust, calculated based on available direct attributes in quality web service (QWS) data sets. After getting training of such evaluation and decision strategies, developers and customers, both will use the knowledge and improve the QoS. This research provides web-based learning about web service quality which will be utilized for prediction, recommendation and the selection of trusted web services in the pool of web services available globally. In this research, the authors include designs to make decisions about the trustworthy web services based on classification, correlation, and curve fitting to improve trust in web service prediction. In order to empower the web services life cycle, they have developed a quality assessment model to incorporate a security and performance policy.
