Computational Semantics Requires Computation

This chapter argues, briefly, that much work in formal Computational Semantics (alias CompSem) is not computational at all, and does not attempt to be; there is some mis-description going on here on a large and long-term scale. The aim of this chapter is to show that such work is not just misdescribed, but loses value because of the scientific importance of implementation and validation in this, as in all parts of Artificial Intelligence. It is the raison d’etre of this subject. Moreover, the examples used to support formal CompSem’s value for the representation of the meaning of language strings often have no place in normal English usage, nor in corpora. This fact, if true, should be better understood as should how this paradoxical situation has arisen and is tolerated. Recent large-scale developments in Natural Language Processing (NLP), such as machine translation or question answering, which are quite successful and undeniably both semantic and computational, have made no use of formal CompSem techniques. Most importantly, the Semantic Web (and Information Extraction techniques generally) now offer the possibility of the large scale use of language data so as to achieve concrete results achieved by methods usually deemed impossible by formal semanticists, such as annotation methods, which are fundamentally forms of Lewis’ (1970) “markerese,” the term he coined to dismiss methods that involve symbolic “mark up” of texts, rather than using formal logic to represent meaning.

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a significant errand in Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications like Information Extraction, Question Answering and so on. In this paper, factual way to deal with perceive Kannada named substances like individual name, area name, association name, number, estimation and time is proposed. We have achieved higher accuracy in CRF approach than the in HMM approach. The accuracy of classification is more accurate in CRF approach due to flexibility of adding more features unlike joint probability alone as in HMM. In HMM it is not practical to represent multiple overlapping features and long term dependencies. CRF ++ Tool Kit is used for experimentation. The consequences of acknowledgment are empowering and the approach has the exactness around 86%.

Objective.To assess the importance of natural language processing (NLP) system for quality assurance of the radiological reports.Material and methods.Multilateral analysis of chest low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) reports based on a commercially available cognitive NLP system was performed. The applicability of artificial intelligence for discrepancy identification in the report body and conclusion (quantitative analysis) and radiologist adherence to the Lung-RADS guidelines (qualitative analysis) was evaluated.Results.Quantitative analysis: in the 8.3% of cases LDCT reports contained discrepancies between text body and conclusion, i.e., lung nodule described only in body or conclusion. It carries potential risks and should be taken into account when performing a radiological study audit. Qualitative analysis: for the Lung-RADS 3 nodules, the recommended principles of patient management were used in 46%, for Lung-RADS 4A – in 42%, and for Lung-RADS 4B – in 49% of cases.Conclusion.The consistency of NLP system within the framework of radiological study audit was 95–96%. The system is applicable for the radiological study audit, i.e. large-scale automated analysis of radiological reports and other medical documents.

Natural language processing (NLP) area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has offered the scope to apply and integrate various other traditional AI fields. While the world was working on comparatively simpler aspects like constraint satisfaction and logical reasoning, the last decade saw a dramatic shift in the research. Now large-scale applications of statistical methods, such as machine learning and data mining are in the limelight. At the same time, the integration of this understanding with Computer Vision, a tech that deals with obtaining information from visual data through cameras will pave way to bring the AI enabled devices closer to a layman also. This paper gives an overview of implementation and trend analysis of such technology in Sales and ServiceSectors.

Paraphrase, i.e., differing textual realizations of the same meaning, has proven useful for many natural language processing (NLP) applications. Collecting paraphrase for predicates in knowledge bases (KBs) is the key to comprehend the RDF triples in KBs. Existing works have published some paraphrase datasets automatically extracted from large corpora, but have too many redundant pairs or don't cover enough predicates, which cannot be improved by computer only and need the help of human beings. This paper shows a full process of collecting large-scale and high-quality paraphrase dictionaries for predicates in knowledge bases, which takes advantage of existing datasets and combines the technologies of machine mining and crowdsourcing. Our dataset comprises 2284 distinct predicates in DBpedia and 31130 paraphrase pairs in total, the quality of which is a great leap over previous works. Then it is demonstrated that such good paraphrase dictionaries can do great help to natural language processing tasks such as question answering and language generation. We also publish our own dictionary for further research.

BACKGROUND: The renewed advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is inducing profound changes in the classic categories of technology professions and is creating the need for new specific skills. OBJECTIVE: Identify the gaps in terms of skills between academic training on AI in French engineering and Business Schools, and the requirements of the labour market. METHOD: Extraction of AI training contents from the schools’ websites and scraping of a job advertisements’ website. Then, analysis based on a text mining approach with a Python code for Natural Language Processing. RESULTS: Categorization of occupations related to AI. Characterization of three classes of skills for the AI market: Technical, Soft and Interdisciplinary. Skills’ gaps concern some professional certifications and the mastery of specific tools, research abilities, and awareness of ethical and regulatory dimensions of AI. CONCLUSIONS: A deep analysis using algorithms for Natural Language Processing. Results that provide a better understanding of the AI capability components at the individual and the organizational levels. A study that can help shape educational programs to respond to the AI market requirements.

Abstract Patient Priorities Care (PPC) is a model of care that aligns health care recommendations with priorities of older adults with multiple chronic conditions. Social workers (SW), after online training, document PPC in the patient’s electronic health record (EHR). Our goal is to identify free-text notes with PPC language using a natural language processing (NLP) model and to measure PPC adoption and effect on long term services and support (LTSS) use. Free-text notes from the EHR produced by trained SWs passed through a hybrid NLP model that utilized rule-based and statistical machine learning. NLP accuracy was validated against chart review. Patients who received PPC were propensity matched with patients not receiving PPC (control) on age, gender, BMI, Charlson comorbidity index, facility and SW. The change in LTSS utilization 6-month intervals were compared by groups with univariate analysis. Chart review indicated that 491 notes out of 689 had PPC language and the NLP model reached to precision of 0.85, a recall of 0.90, an F1 of 0.87, and an accuracy of 0.91. Within group analysis shows that intervention group used LTSS 1.8 times more in the 6 months after the encounter compared to 6 months prior. Between group analysis shows that intervention group has significant higher number of LTSS utilization (p=0.012). An automated NLP model can be used to reliably measure the adaptation of PPC by SW. PPC seems to encourage use of LTSS that may delay time to long term care placement.
