Firewall is a critical technology in protecting enterprise network systems and individual hosts. Firewalls can be implemented through a specific software application or as a dedicated appliance. Depending on the security policies in an organization, several firewall implementation architectures are available, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, a thorough understanding of firewall technology, its features and limitations, and implementation considerations is very important in the design and implementation of effective firewall architecture in an organization. This chapter covers the life cycle of firewall design, selection, and implementation.

The selection of a design for the given product is a critical problem in product design development. Focuses of the designers and customers on the design are not identical. In order to bridge the gap and provide a more relaxing way to select the design, a new method based on quality function deployment (QFD) is proposed. In such a method, customers are required to give their linguistic preferences on the design with respect to the customer requirements (CRs). In the rating of the weight of CRs, they are allowed to provide incomplete linguistic weight information and the objective optimization model is proposed to derive the exact linguistic weight information. Designers are required to rate the correlation between design requirements (DRs) and the relationship between the CRs and DRs to construct the house of quality. Opinions given by the customers are translated into the opinions with respect to the DRs based on the QFD. Afterwards, the priorities of the designs and design requirements are determined. The assessment results not only show the contribution of each design requirement to the customer satisfaction but also show the advantages and disadvantages of each design from the designers’ perspective clearly and directly. An example is provided to validate the applicability of the proposed method.

Purpose This paper aims to review the critical technology development of avian radar system at airports. Design/methodology/approach After the origin of avian radar technology is discussed, the target characteristics of flying birds are analyzed, including the target echo amplitude, flight speed, flight height, trajectory and micro-Doppler. Four typical airport avian radar systems of Merlin, Accipiter, Robin and CAST are introduced. The performance of different modules such as antenna, target detection and tracking, target recognition and classification, analysis of bird information together determines the detection ability of avian radar. The performances and key technologies of the ubiquitous avian radar are summarized and compared with other systems, and their applications, deployment modes, as well as their advantages and disadvantages are introduced and analyzed. Findings The ubiquitous avian radar achieves the long-time integration of target echoes, which greatly improves detection and classification ability of the targets of birds or drones, even under strong background clutter at airport. In addition, based on the big data of bird situation accumulated by avian radar, the rules of bird activity around the airport can be mined to guide the bird avoidance work. Originality/value This paper presented a novel avian radar system based on ubiquitous digital radar technology. The authors’ experience has confirmed that this system can be effective for airport bird strike prevention and management. In the future, the avian radar system will see continued improvement in both software and hardware, as the system is designed to be easily extensible.

Application software development has always been viewed as a massive challenge by companies that view IT services as a support function rather than a core function. The term “core” here implies that IT plays an enabler role to facilitate technology and services that support users to meet set business objectives in an efficient way. Furthermore, IT development is perceived by many managers as a burden; hence, they prefer the fast track implementation of specialized packages to deliver the majority of service levels over the long wait for systems to be built in-house, even though the latter option is more advantageous in the long run, as it offers a much better fit to all user requirements. With this dilemma in mind, this case is an example of how an in-house development solution was implemented. The case touches on positive and negative aspects of the decision to build the application and covers a range of issues encountered during every phase of the development life cycle.

Managing project sustainability is becoming important in the last two decades since the Earth Summit in 1992. An increasing number of projects have built in sustainability considerations into project design and implementation. Recent research findings show that lack of sustainability knowledge for project managers is a key barrier to drive projects and programs contributing towards a sustainable society. Definitions and approaches (pillar-based and principles-based) to sustainability in project management together with project manager competence requirements are discussed. The purpose of this chapter is to devise an assessment tool for project managers incorporating the concept of pillar-based and principles-based sustainability approaches as well as the EIA-driven and objectives-led assessment methodologies. Criteria for selecting assessment scheme appropriate to various project initiatives are developed. Integrating selected assessment methodology into sustainability evaluation framework within the project life cycle forms a complete tool. This chapter contributes to devising a practical assessment tool for project managers in managing project sustainability.

The calculations of life cycle costs (LCC) and whole life costs (WLC) are important tools in the life cycle of a project. The aim of this research is to examine life cycle costing, whole life costing, and the possible advantages and disadvantages to their introduction and use. A qualitative methodology encompassing an in-depth literature review, interviews, and qualitative analysis using mind mapping software, this research is important as it can add to the industry's understanding of the design process. It highlights reasons for the success or failure of a construction project, in terms of sustainability at the design stage. Results indicate that the researched topics had many advantages but also had inherent disadvantages. It is found that the potential advantages outweighed disadvantages, but uptake within industry is still slow and that better promotion and their benefits to sustainability, the environment, society, and the industry are required.

This paper presents with a new reliable inexpensive wireless health monitoring system designed for fishermen. Presently there are many smart devices available for the general population with many features in them that not put to use in every situation of our life. The most important aim of this paper is to deal with the safety and well-being of the fishermen during their voyage. The major cause of fishermen’s poor health during voyage is due to lack of proper health guidance to the fishermen. This paper proposes with the monitoring of the fisherman’s health through various sensors and relaying of those signals through blue tooth connectivity. The monitoring signals are finally obtained in Android mobile devices that can be used by the crew in real-time. The proposed approach is feasible for fishermen by establishing a software application to monitor the health of the fisherman. The proposed system is simple, economical and specifically designed for the people of the fishing community and it also enhances the motor control of the boat through the software interface by using a set of soft keys.

STP uses a custom enterprise software application called RICTCal to calculate risk informed completion times (RICTs). Besides providing the end user interface to the calculation engine, the software also creates electronic regulatory-required reports that are automatically filed in the plant records management system. In addition to regulatory-required information on risk informed completion times and risk managed action times (RMATs), the software provides additional configuration risk information such as risk for reactor trip. The computation methodology and design of the software is described as well as required input data to support the calculation.
