The residue number system (RNS) is widely used in different areas due to the efficiency of modular addition and multiplication operations. However, non-modular operations, such as sign and division operations, are computationally complex. A fractional representation based on the Chinese remainder theorem is widely used. In some cases, this method gives an incorrect result associated with round-off calculation errors. In this paper, we optimize the division operation in RNS using the Akushsky core function without critical cores. We show that the proposed method reduces the size of the operands by half and does not require additional restrictions on the divisor as in the division algorithm in RNS based on the approximate method.

Tellurite is highly toxic to bacteria and commonly used in the clinical screening for pathogens; it is speculated that there is a potential relationship between tellurite resistance and bacterial pathogenicity. Until now, the core function genes of tellurite resistance and their characteristics are still obscure. Pseudomonas citronellolis SJTE-3 was found able to resist high concentrations of tellurite (250 μg/mL) and formed vacuole-like tellurium nanostructures. The terZABCDE gene cluster located in the large plasmid pRBL16 endowed strain SJTE-3 with the tellurite resistance of high levels. Although the terC and terD genes were identified as the core function genes for tellurite reduction and resistance, the inhibition of cell growth was observed when they were used solely. Interestingly, co-expression of the terA gene or terZ gene could relieve the burden caused by the expression of the terCD genes and recover normal cell growth. TerC and TerD proteins commonly shared the conserved sequences and are widely distributed in many pathogenic bacteria, highly associated with the pathogenicity factors.

In this paper I will focus on education as the core function of reason in Kant and Fichte. The notion of reason carries an intrinsic tendency to universality, which is difficult to be reconciled with its local (cultural, historical, anthropological) background and actualisation. I believe that the stress on the importance of learning, which can be seen in the works of both Kant and Fichte, might provide useful clues to approaching the relation between universality and particularity. I will start by focusing on Kant’s narration on the genealogy of human reason in the Conjectural Beginning of Human History, and then move on to the critical writings and selected lectures in order to focus on the role of human dignity and ethical education for the moral appraisal and the practice of virtue. Later, I will consider Fichte’s lectures on the Vocation of the Scholar, the Vocation of Man and The Characteristics of the Present Age, which are crucial to understanding the social, ethical and political role of the scholar. For Fichte, education is the best instrument to eradicate selfishness, regarded as a historical phenomenon which can lead a nation to ruin. I will then provide some conclusions concerning the two accounts and their implications.

We propose that the entirety of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) can be seen as fundamentally premotor in nature. By this, we mean that the PFC consists of an action abstraction hierarchy whose core function is the potentiation and depotentiation of possible action plans at different levels of granularity. We argue that the apex of the hierarchy should revolve around the process of goal-selection, which we posit is inherently a form of optimization over action abstraction. Anatomical and functional evidence supports the idea that this hierarchy originates on the orbital surface of the brain and extends dorsally to motor cortex. Accordingly, our viewpoint positions the orbitofrontal cortex in a key role in the optimization of goal-selection policies, and suggests that its other proposed roles are aspects of this more general function. Our proposed perspective will reframe outstanding questions, open up new areas of inquiry and align theories of prefrontal function with evolutionary principles. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Systems neuroscience through the lens of evolutionary theory’.

Based on the needs of regional industrial development and technical personnel training, the training base for technical skill as the core function has effectively enhanced the development of vocational education. However, at present, the training base in vocational colleges is mainly applied for students’ teaching, and the overall utilization rate is low. It is of great importance in the rational application of software and hardware resources onto the training base to widely carry out popular science activities. The importance of training base construction and scientific popularization is expounded. On this basis, the research team took the S&T racing training base as a case to study its expandable scientific popularization function. The practice results show that using the resources of the training base to carry out scientific popularization activities can greatly improve teenagers’ interest in automobile technology. More training bases in vocational colleges should expand the function of scientific popularization.

Significance The December 7 virtual summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin was an attempt to reduce the risk of imminent conflict. The results, including an agreement to discuss European security, appear to have had some success, but have not led to de-escalation: Moscow shows no sign of pulling back troops massed around Ukraine. Impacts The war risk is not top of the news agenda in Ukraine, and the government seems inclined to downplay it. Closer US-NATO alignment will ease European fears but complicate some decisions. After engagement further afield, NATO will revert to its core function of assuring security in Europe.

Recommender systems represent a critical field of AI technology applications. The core function of a recommender system is to recommend items of interest to users, but if it is only user history-based (purchasing or browsing data), it can only recommend similar products to a user, which makes the user feel fatigued (creating so-called “Information Cocoons”). Besides, transaction data (purchasing or browsing data) in various fields usually follow Pareto distributions. Accordingly, 20% of products are purchased or viewed a greater number of times (short-head items), while the remaining 80% of products are purchased or viewed less frequently (long-tail items). Using the traditional recommendation method, considering only the accuracy of recommendations, the coverage rate is relatively low, and most of the recommended items are short-head items. The long-tail item recommendation method not only considers the recommendation of short-head items but also considers recommending more long-tail items to users, thus improving the coverage and diversity of the recommendation results. Long-tail item recommendation research has become a frontier issue in recommendation systems in recent years. While the current research paper is still scarce, there have been related research achievements in top-level conferences in the field of computers, such as VLDB and IJCAI. Due to the fact that there is no review literature in this field, to allow readers to better understand the research status of the long-tail item recommendation method, this paper summarizes the progress of the research on long-tail item recommendation methods (from clustering-based, which began in 2008, to deep learning-based methods, which began in 2020) and the future directions associated with this research.

This study provided the latest comparative genomic analysis on Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strains and focused on analyzing their genomic features that allow them to adapt to natural environments. In this study, we set S. maltophilia W18 as a typical PAH-degrading strain of this species. By discussing the genomic adaptative features of degrading PAH, we can predict genomic adaptative features of other S. maltophilia PAH-degrading strains since the core function of this species is stable.

The procuratorial civil public interest litigation system is a kind of legal system, which will realize certain legal functions. As an important way for procuratorial organs to exercise their functions and powers, procuratorial civil public interest litigation system in China has many functions: on the one hand, it has the core function of protecting social public interests; on the other hand, it has the main function of enforcing laws, forming public policies and promoting social governance; and it has the guiding function of providing reference for similar reforms. How to fully give play to the function of procuratorial civil public interest litigation, the big data is an important means. Procuratorial organs should make full use of the information of data platform, and enhance the joint efforts of public welfare protection, and set up the thinking of handling cases with information and improve application ability, so as to plug in "wisdom wings" for the procuratorial civil public interest litigation.

Marae Ora, Kainga Ora (MOKO) is a three-year research study established as a marae-led intervention project to strengthen the provision of housing with five urban marae in South Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. In brief, marae are primarily places for cultural gatherings and are the centres of activity for Māori communities. Though just one of the marae involved is part of a pre-European tribal settlement, the four other marae were established to meet the cultural needs of Māori who had relocated many decades ago from their tribal areas outside of the Auckland region. The project works with Marae Research Coordinators (MRC) nominated by each marae to build research and development capacity and capability through the sharing of skills, information, and resources. Each MRC is affiliated with their respective marae, either through whakapapa (genealogical links) or through their contributions of service and leadership. The role of the MRC is critical in capturing the lived realities, experiences, and aspirations of their marae community. This was evident in the first year of the project (2020) when three of the five marae actively responded to the needs of their communities during COVID-19 lockdowns in Auckland. While the project has a housing focus, the marae involved demonstrate, in their own distinctive ways, how health and wellbeing is intrinsic to their core function.
