Distance learning characteristics has been changing dramatically, namely since the fourth generation of distance learning. Moreover, e-learning impressive “evolution” enabled a trade-off between learning outcomes and ethical behaviour, which traditional learning theories do not embrace and that connectivism endeavours to illustrate. Although, two important queries arise: what challenges e-learning 2.0 and 3.0 impose? And, does connectivism promote ethical knowledge? Therefore, this chapter aims to endorse a theoretical debate regarding e-learning, as well as to understand if connectivism will act as 21st century learning theory, or if the quest for an ethical connective knowledge and e-learning fusion with knowledge management itself will require a novel contribution (connethionicism). Despite the assumption that connectivism has been promoting a reasonable debate, the author‘s personal experiences highlight the need for ethicism.

In the last decade, there is a common conviction and connectedness for modern e-learning practices to use online virtual environments (or worlds) for arousing students’ interesting in various experiential activities. In this perspective, this chapter creates and proposes a “Cybernetic Planning Framework” (CPF), which combines the diversity of educational theories and practices, yielding in a common basis for their inclusion. The present chapter focuses on Second Life’s qualitative characteristics that can be utilized to construct a “teaching-organizational” framework, which is essential for planning effective and meaningful distance learning courses. This gain averred a “cybernetic model,” in which users enhanced pedagogical authorities and principles of Contemporary Learning Theories that previous studies carried out in Second Life. This premise recapitulates the value-added of this chapter, which can successfully be adapted to any 3D “open” and “sustainable” education system, emphasizing on integration and innovation of teaching methods.

With the improvement of internet technologies and multimedia resources, traditional learning has been replaced by distance learning, web-based learning or others’ e-learning learning styles. According to distance learning, there are many research organizations and companies who make efforts in developing the relevant systems. But they lack interoperability. The only way to reuse these applications is to redevelop them for specific purposes. In order to solve this situation and norm the various learning resources, IMS proposes a new e-learning standard named “Common Cartridge”. This standard not only integrates the past e-learning standards like LOM, SCORM and QTI but also proposes a technical architecture called Learning Tools Interoperability to allow applications to reuse different systems without reprogramming. In this paper, we firstly introduce the current e-learning environment. Then we pay attention on the usage of Common Cartridge standards and discuss the architecture of Learning Tools Interoperability. According to these standards, we will point out the e-learning standard that might be widely utilized in the future.

The adoption of social media in e-learning signals the end of distance education as we know it in higher education. However, it appears to have very little impact on the way in which open and distance learning (ODL) institutions are functioning. Earlier research suggests that a significant part of the explanation for the slow uptake of social media in e-learning lies outside of conventional factors attributed to distance learning reforms.

This research used the conceptual framework for online collaborative learning (OCL) in higher education. Social media such as blogs, wikis, Skype or Google Hangout, Facebook; and even mobile apps, such as WhatsApp; could facilitate deep learning and the creation of knowledge in e-learning at higher educational institutions.

This metasynthesis is an interpretative integration of peer-reviewed qualitative research findings on social media in e-learning. It includes a synthesis of data, research methods, and theories used to investigate social media in e-learning. Seven themes emerged from the data which have been recrafted into a framework for social media in e-learning as the final product. The proposed framework could be useful to instructional designers and academics who are interested in using modern learning theories and want to adopt social media in e-learning in higher education as a deep learning strategy.

Learning Theories and Architectures Pedagogical: The Relationship Between Both in Distance Learning Abstract The research mainly aimed to present how the main learning theories adapt to teaching from a distance. The secondary objective is to identify and present characteristics of the doctrines used in preparing the pedagogical architectures in e-learning courses. The study was conducted online because e-learning is the largest expanded and connected channel that frequently updates technologic tools used by society. In this work, the best known and explored learning theories in the works distance e-learning have been addressed,, namely: behavioral, cognitive, and sociocultural constructivist. The pedagogical architectures studied were: case study or problem solving, learning incident, and simulated action. After studying the pedagogical theories and architectural models presented, it was possible to establish a direct relationship between them, and identify variations such as the role of the teacher in e-learning for reaching the final purpose. The final result confirms the initial assumption of the research that there is no specific theory for e-learning and that everything will vary according with the purpose of the course. The growing demand for education courses in e-learning and the popularization of internet access will allow new architectural models pedagogical to be created in the future, but always with the support of some learning theory. It is believed that with the passage of time and an increasing empirical basis, there can be more exploration of other theories. Keywords: Learning theory; Learning architecture; Distance learning.

Implementing a performant knowledge management system in military institutions involves emphasizing the role of the organizational dimension that promotes learning, increasing the quality of employees' work and consolidating managers in these institutions as leaders who encourage learning at all levels. The objectives of knowledge acquisition must be defined in such a way as to improve performance and support the trust of the beneficiary of the public service provided. The development of organizational culture within the institution allows people to adopt new values, attitudes and behaviors. Investing in an efficient knowledge management system involves the development of training and education programs that contribute to improving the skills of employees and knowledge sharing both vertically and horizontally, in order to provide quality public service and create value within the community. Knowledge management can be implemented more efficiently and beneficially in the context of the increasing use of technology in educational activities. Thus, integration of e-learning in knowledge management systems allows the removal of space and time barriers from learning. The question is whether current e-learning systems meet the requirements of knowledge management and provide results comparable to those obtained through traditional learning.

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the wide literature review made on computer mediated learning. Online Education system may include models and methodologies based on learning theories that support individual styles and contexts. The use of e-learning environment is limited only by the creativity. If we just decide for providing online contents, even if they are well constructed, at long term it may become uninteresting and based only on theory. We cannot state that e-learning has either more or less quality than traditional learning. E-learning quality depends on the instruction design and on the students engagement. In this review of literature, the authors combine different points of view. A theoretical model that emerged from the inquiry made will be showed and may support the integration of technologies, in order to enhance the learning.

Abstract Lifelong learning requires appropriate solutions, especially for corporate training. Workers usually have difficulty combining training and their normal work. In this context, micro-learning emerges as a suitable solution, since it is based on breaking down new concepts into small fragments or pills of content, which can be consumed in short periods of time. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we offer an updated overview of the research on this training paradigm, as well as the different technologies leading to potential commercial solutions. Second, we introduce a proposal to add micro-learning content to more formal distance learning environments (traditional Learning Management Systems or LMS), with the aim of taking advantage of both learning philosophies. Our approach is based on a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) that is deployed in the cloud. In order to ensure the full integration of the micro-learning approach in traditional LMSs, we have used two well-known standards in the distance learning field: LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) and LIS (Learning Information Service). The combination of these two technologies allows the exchange of data with the LMS to monitor the student’s activity and results. Finally, we have collected the opinion of lectures from different countries in order to know their thoughts about the potential of this new approach in higher education, obtaining positive feedback.

A dramatic change has been required on how the students are getting their education due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Malaysia. Not only did the students have to maintain a social distance from their peers and family, but students also must adapt with online learning. Remote learning has become the norm to avoid the wide-reaching and transferable contagious disease. The sudden outbreak disrupted the education system worldwide and forced educators to switch to online mode of teaching. Some students acknowledge and are ready for online learning. However, some are reluctant to shift from traditional learning to online learning. There seem to be several methods where educators could help to make the virtual education experience more engaging and efficient. Therefore, several articles on enhancing online learning and teaching were summarized. Most of the existing research suggests that the adaptation of distance learning was a brilliant choice. Nevertheless, study showed that some students tend to detest online learning due to personal and technological difficulty issues. Besides, distance learning has also been found to be related to psychological impact such as stress and anxiety. Moreover, the existing research discovered that online learning could give psychological impacts in correlation with the challenging learning process. This paper summarizes relevant scholarly articles, identifies ideas and the need for further study.
