Developing Capabilities for Sustainability in Family Small Enterprises

Though literature in family perpetuity and sustainability is well documented from the advanced economies, there is scarcity of insights from emerging markets where this research relates. The study, therefore, sought to investigate, understand, and interpret the underlying drivers of sustainability in small family businesses using the stewardship theory paradigm in the Nigerian family business environment. A qualitative method with 41 in-depth interviews involving owners and managers of family-owned small and medium businesses was conducted. The study empirically shows that there is an interrelationship between family structure and business sustainability; hence, the practice of polygamy was found to be inimical to family business success and sustainability. Building on the stewardship theory, the paper develops a model of sustainability for small and medium family businesses. The study contributes to the theoretical literature on stewardship and family business sustainability.

The academic discourse on ‘family’ perpetuity in family-owned businesses (FOB) is still burgeoning.  Current findings suggest the importance of family control and family inter-generational sustainability in family-owned businesses. Though literature in family perpetuity and sustainability is well documented from the advanced economies, there is a scarcity of insights from emerging markets where this research relates.  The study, therefore, sought to investigate, understand and interpret the underlying drivers of sustainability in small and medium family businesses using the stewardship theory paradigm and relying on evidence from an emerging market economy the Nigerian family business environment. A qualitative method with 41 in-depth interviews involving owners and managers of family-owned small and medium businesses was conducted. The study empirically shows that there is an interrelationship between family structure and business sustainability, hence the practice of polygamy was found to be inimical to family business success and sustainability. The study also showed that the element of spirituality arising from the ideals and values of the owning family is a significant factor for ensuring family wellbeing and business sustainability, and founding owner characteristics (industry experience) and impacts positively on the business performance and continuity. The study confirmed that the stewardship of non-family member employees within the business is provisional stewardship as non-family members rely on other incentives from the owning family members to behave as stewards.  Building on the stewardship theory, the paper develops a model of sustainability for small and medium family businesses. The study contributes to the theoretical literature on stewardship and family business sustainability

This chapter seeks to consider both the role that knowledge transfer may have in family businesses and the different manners in which knowledge transfer may take place within this diverse environment. The economic, social and community importance of family businesses within Scotland is considered, alongside the different manner in which family businesses commonly operate and the implications for knowledge transfer. The importance of knowledge transfer in the creation of competitive advantage within a family business environment and the relatively limited nature of research in this area are explored, highlighting the need for further research both to support the on-going development of a strategy for family businesses in Scotland and to facilitate future development of high quality knowledge transfer. Key to all of this, however, is an increased understanding of what is meant by knowledge transfer and the breadth of ways in which it happens.

This study investigates the professional experiences of female heirs in a variety of family businesses located in three states of the Brazilian Southeast. The aim is to analyze both how the family and business structures affect the daughters' visibility in managerial positions and the resulting gender relations. Twelve open-ended, in-depth interviews were conducted. The responses were analyzed, and pathways were classified according to the Gersick, Davis, Hampton, and Lansberg (1997) three-dimensional development model of family businesses. Three groups were formed to describe the daughters' experiences: invisible, professional, and anchor.

The culinary business in the city of Palembang is one of the family businesses that has been passed down for generations, the culinary business in recent years can create growth opportunities for employment and increase the ability of human resources. Management of many family businesses is controlled and operated by one member or several families and many family businesses have non-family members as employees. This study aims to determine the role of knowledge management in creating human resources who are ready to compete in the culinary industry in the city of Palembang. by analyzing the factors that must be considered such as the next generation development factors, information technology, and business development. This research uses a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and direct observation. The results of this study indicate that the culinary business in the family business is still carried out traditionally the application of technology is still limited so the need for the role of knowledge management in order to be able to identify knowledge can realize competitiveness and sustainability as a benchmark for the success of the family business especially the culinary business in the city of Palembang   Abstrak Bisnis  kuliner di kota Palembang merupakan salah satu bisnis keluarga yang sudah turun temurun,  bisnis kuliner tersebut dalam beberapa tahun ini dapat menciptakan peluang pertumbuhan bagi lapangan kerja dan peningkatan kemampuan sumber daya manusia. Manajemen bisnis keluarga banyak dikendalikan dan dioperasikan oleh  satu anggota atau beberapa keluarga dan banyak bisnis keluarga memiliki anggota non keluarga sebagai karyawan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peran knowledge management dalam  menciptakan sumber daya manusia yang siap untuk berdaya saing  pada industri kuliner di kota Palembang. dengan menganalisis  faktor- faktor yang harus diperhatikan seperti faktor pengembangan generasi penerus, teknologi informasi,dan  pengembangan usaha. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi langsung. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bisnis kuliner dalam bisnis keluarga masih dilakukan tradisional penerapan teknologi masih terbatas sehingga perlu adanya peran knowledge management agar   mampu mengidentifikasi pengetahuan dapat mewujudkan daya saing dan berkelanjutan  sebagai  tolak ukur keberhasilan bisnis keluarga khususnya bisnis kuliner  di kota Palembang.

Interpersonal ties and intra-group processes influence the ability of people to work together effectively as teams. In the context of the family business team, intra-group processes describe the interaction that takes place between the family members and the resultant psychological climate that exists in the family business. Given the increasing number of sibling teams among family businesses, as well as the challenges they face as team members, this study focuses on sibling teams in family businesses and the intra-group processes that influence their success. Consequently, the primary objective of this study is to identify and empirically test the intra-group processes influencing the effectiveness of sibling partnerships. A structured questionnaire was distributed to 1323 sibling partner respondents. The respondents were identified by means of a convenience snowball sampling technique, and the data were collected from 371 usable questionnaires. The empirical findings of this study show that the sibling relationship and fairness are important determinants of sibling team effectiveness.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the sources of financing accumulation that women entrepreneurs of family businesses use for start-up capital in the garment sector of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). Design/methodology/approach This study presents insights gleaned from a qualitative case study into the ways in which women in Lao PDR finance their family businesses in the start-up phase. The authors conducted 36 in-depth interviews – the study used this purposive sample in each of its five rounds of data collection. The data were collected between December 2018 and April 2019 and were analysed by conducting a content analysis assisted by the software programme ATLAS.ti. Findings The results, though highly case specific, show Lao women’s ability to: accrue their experience, apply their knowledge, engage in self-employment, support their families and aspire to become entrepreneurs. The findings clearly illustrate that women are opportunity and necessity driven, can accumulate income, possess savings behaviour, can manage working capital, investment and accounting and have access to finance (loan and debt) and thus have the potential to become successful entrepreneurs. Originality/value By contextualizing women’s entrepreneurial practices, the paper contributes to an understanding of the sources of financing accumulation used for start-up capital in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Theoretically, the paper extends the knowledge of women entrepreneurs seeking the optimal stock of finance which has the potential to drive family business success.

<p>The greatest threats to the growth, success and survival of a family business are primarily issues related to family relationships. The involvement of non-family members has also shown to present many threats as well as opportunities for the family business. Because of the increasing number of sibling teams among family businesses this article focuses on the impact of family and non-family members’ involvement on the success of sibling-owned family businesses. Key stakeholders identified as influencing a Sibling Partnership are parents, non-active sibling shareholders, spouses, and non-family members. The primary objectives of this article are thus to evaluate the impact of the stakeholders identified on the success of a Sibling Partnership, by subjecting these relationships to empirical testing, and making recommendations to successfully manage relationships in family businesses. A structured questionnaire was made available to 1 323 sibling partner respondents. The respondents were identified by means of a convenience snowball sampling technique, and the data collected from 371 usable questionnaires was subjected to various statistical analyses. The empirical findings of this study show that both past and present Parental involvement, as well as the involvement of other family members and Non-family employees in the sibling-owned family businesses, significantly impact on its success.</p><p><strong>Keywords and phrases:</strong> Family business, Sibling Partnership, family team, family relationships, spouses, non-active shareholders, stakeholders</p>

Family businesses are generally affected by resource constraints. These resource constraints are occasioned by the vagaries in the business environment. Consequently, budding and established family business entrepreneurs are now resorting to the acquisition and sharing of intangible resources as a strategy for achieving family business development. One type of resource that is increasingly being employed is entrepreneurial networks. In spite of the known supports entrepreneurial networks give to entrepreneurs at the different states of family business development, empirical evidences are still rear. Based on the foregoing, this study undertook a literature review and thereafter proposes that: the effect of family network on family business start-up is significant; the effect of intra-industry network on family business formalization is significant; the effect of professional network on family business professionalization is significant; the effect of extra-industry network on family business diversification is significant; the effect of social network on family business internationalization is significant; and the effect of intra-firm network on family business succession is significant. For family business development to be influenced by entrepreneurial networks, budding entrepreneurs, founder and/or descendant CEOs and employees of family businesses need to be actively involved in network relationships that encourage and facilitates resource acquisition and sharing. Moreover, an empirical study is recommended based on these propositions. This is to validate the propositions and to further add to the family business development and entrepreneurial networks literature.

The fashion industry remains as one of the most highly competitive industries where many fashion designers may find it difficult to establish sustainable fashion businesses. Navigating through the fashion business and ensuring business success, growth and long-term sustainability were generally considered to be the ultimate goal and biggest challenge many fashion designers continue to struggle with. This study was aimed to determine all key factors that are integral and contribute to fashion business sustainability by presenting findings provided by three Indonesian fashion designer’s responses to the issue of fashion business sustainability, the various challenges, and what factors are needed to ensure a long lasting through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Overall findings revealed the need for fashion designers to have an entrepreneurial mindset and for fashion businesses to possess all sustainable business key factors in various aspects ranging from design, business and the various qualities from the fashion designer themselves, while also taking account of the external state which was set in the Indonesian fashion industry for business sustainability and organic business growth. Fashion designers who controls all these factors will have a significantly higher chance of sustainability while competing with other fashion businesses.
