Practical Implementation of Assessment Activities for Deep Learning

Student assessment would influence the quality of the graduates produced. However, many assessment strategies are found to inhibit this intention. As such, this chapter proposes a few assessment activities, along with their practical implementation, that may encourage deep learning among students in the learning of management accounting subjects. This chapter reviews previous literature, focusing on the characteristics of effective assessment activities that suit the nature of the Millennial. Five assessment activities, namely test/quiz, case study, field study, simulated enterprise, and classroom activities, are proposed. A questionnaire evaluating the preferences of the students and lecturers on how the proposed activities could be implemented was adapted. The chapter elaborates on the practical implementation of the five proposed assessment activities believed to engage students' learning so they become deep learners. A future research project is also put forth.

This paper uses Singapore as a case study to illustrate how staffing policies and practices affect the quality of the workforce which ultimately influence performance at employee and organization level. It reveals that Singapore public service has been able to put in place most of the ‘critical factors’ for an effective staffing system management. The presence of those critical factors have played an important role in making Singapore to be one of the most effective public services in the world. Finally, it forwards theoretical and practical implications of the study and future research direction.

This  paper  use  SERVQUAL measure  for  assessingthe  quality  of  the  administrative  services  in  a  large  mall,located in Brazil,  seen from the point of view of the currentservice  providers.  A questionnaire  was  used  to  interview 68service companies, and 5 CEO mall of this case of study. Twofactors were compared: the expectations and perceptions of theservice  providers,  the  comparison  enabled  the  strengths  andweaknesses of the quality perceived of the services offered bythe  mall  were  undertaken  as  a  case  study. Understand whatfeatures  and  level  of  service  must  have  in  order  to  meetconsumer needs, against on how consumers perceive the actualmall  performance  in  the  context  of  what  they  expected  to ensuring  good  service  to  classify  into  three  categories  offactors:  Basic,  Performance  and  Excitement.The  findings  ofthis study may prompt future research to create a new tool tohelp those managers and service companies in the process ofmaking decisions aimed at improving the strategic relationshipwith retail companies and thus to improve the quality of themall  services.  One  contribution  of  this  study  is  the  simpleproposed model used to understanding how quality processesaffect each organizational dimension of service performance.

The purpose of this study was to examine postgraduate students’ perceptions of assessment feedback. Using the Critical Incident Technique, students enrolled on a taught clinical course were asked for their perceptions of effective and ineffective examples of assessment feedback. The data were analysed using thematic analysis and nine themes emerged that capture perceptions associated with feedback content and feedback process. Students perceived effective feedback if it was specific and clear, using positive tone of language. They expressed a preference for feedback that is delivered in a standardised format, reflecting the grades given, individualised, and when the marking criteria is explicit and enables dialogue with the marker. Students perceived feedback to be ineffective when it focused on grammatical errors rather than content, when it was provided by anonymous graders and if it was too personal. Timeliness of feedback was also important to participants. Practical implications and suggestions for future research are highlighted in this paper.

Purposeful integration of assessment within educational wargame design is increasingly essential as military education expands those activities within its curriculum. This multimethod case study examines key challenges and strategies for assessment within educational wargaming practice. Drawing insights from faculty interviews, academic documents, and faculty meeting observations, the study identifies six key assessment challenges: gamesmanship, lack of control, multiple faculty roles, receptiveness to feedback, evaluation of individuals in teams, and fairness of evaluation. It then discusses how experienced faculty mitigate these challenges throughout the assessment design process from identifying outcomes to ensuring the quality of evaluation.

The reliability of power system under fault susceptible environment has become major challenge for the power sector units. The injection of renewable power source has increased the complexity for distribution system and to deal with massive network, evolution of smart-grid has been enforced, which works in an automated fashion to improve overall reliability, efficiency and quality of the system. Proactive Self-healing is a critical feature of smart-grid. This paper tries to explain the concept sensing the occurrence of fault beforehand and providing possible solution for self-healing in smart grid. The fundamental base for incorporating afore discussed technology viz. understanding nature of fault, sources of fault and implementation of effective measuring techniques are enumerated in paper briefly. Support required in terms of technology is reviewed towards the end followed by a case study of practical implementation of self-healing control in a distribution system.

The Programme International for Student Assessment (PISA) has become a tool in determining the quality of education in a certain country. Unfortunately, Indonesian students still have difficulties in solving PISA problems. In an effort to improve students' ability in Indonesia to solve PISA questions, we need to analyze their difficulties in solving contextual problems. In this study, we have developed PISA-like problems by taking into account the contextual environment of students and current Indonesian curriculum. Forty-eight PISA-like math problems in Bahasa Indonesia have been developed consisting of sixteen questions level one, sixteen questions level two, and sixteen questions level three. Then, those PISA-like math problems were used to assess the students’ ability (case study in SMPN 8 Banda Aceh, Indonesia). Our study revealed that the ability of students is very low in understanding the information given in the problems. The students’ ability in the mathematical process and decoding are also quite low. Students should practice the PISA-like problems in the teaching-learning process in order to improve their abilities in PISA.

In order to develop the skills and competences required in a professional environment, university students have to reflect on their own role in the learning process. The traditional methods of assessment do not assess reflective thinking, critical thinking, self-evaluation and peer evaluation. Peer assessment may be a way to solve this problem. In this paper, it is researched how peer assessment could be applied to higher education and the effect of using this form of assessment on the quality of learning. The methodology to investigate the effect of peer assessment as a part of the learning process includes literature observation, case study, developing protocols and marking criteria rules for peer assessment, examples of peer assessment strategies and activities. The results of the research demonstrate that peer assessment methods of either written or oral performance can trigger a deeper involvement of students both in the learning and in the assessment process, keep motivation up and develop some qualities essential for future professional life. Therefor peer assessment could be effectively integrated in the course of ESP at the Moscow Higher School of Economics.

<p>Quality of Service (QoS) is one of the most important parameters to be considered in computer networking and communication. The traditional network incorporates various quality QoS frameworks to enhance the quality of services. Due to the distributed nature of the traditional networks, providing quality of service, based on service level agreement (SLA) is a complex task for the network designers and administrators. With the advent of software defined networks (SDN), the task of ensuring QoS is expected to become feasible. Since SDN has logically centralized architecture, it may be able to provide QoS, which was otherwise extremely difficult in traditional network architectures. Emergence and popularity of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have opened up even more possibilities in the line of QoS assurance. In this article, the focus has been mainly on machine learning and deep learning based QoS aware protocols that have been developed so far for SDN. The functional areas of SDN namely traffic classification, QoS aware routing, queuing, and scheduling are considered in this survey. The article presents a systematic and comprehensive study on different ML and DL based approaches designed to improve overall QoS in SDN. Different research issues & challenges, and future research directions in the area of QoS in SDN are outlined. <b></b></p>

This paper focuses on forecasting of products with sporadic demand. The demand for such products is not continuous but diffused seemingly at random, with a large proportion of zero values in the analyzed time series. The sporadic character of demand patterns actually means that the information available on the demand for previous selling periods is patchy, resulting in lower quality of data available. Under such circumstances demand forecasting is a challenging task. We present the results of a case study, where forecasting practice of a pharmaceutical wholesaler firm –we call it Pharma– is analyzed and developed. We present state-of-the-art knowledge related to demand forecasting of sporadic products and test suggestions related to them. We show that these suggestions can only partly be backed. We extend therefore the suggested product classification scheme and recommend using the concept of demand data aggregation. This will reduce sporadicity and result in higher quality forecasting. Aggregation also helps to specify the recommended forecast period, the length of time recommended to calculate the forecast for. The managerial consequences of these suggestions are also discussed, and future research directions are highlighted.
