Societal-Level Cross-Functional Matrix Management

The challenges around adapting to social ecosystems with less work, in a time of a disruptive Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), may be partially mitigated with a macro societal-level matrix management approach, with artificial-intelligence support. This concept suggests that human workers may engage with various cross-functional teams on various projects, so they would have both a basic supervisor based on function, and various other project leads to whom they report in a dotted-line way. This work highlights how this structure aligns with contemporary work culture and technologies and explores some possible implications of this approach.

Characteristics of the industrial revolution 4.0 is the wide application of high-tech achievements, especially information technology, digitalization, artificial intelligence, network connections for management to create sudden changes in socio-economic development of many countries. Therefore, to reach the high-tech time, many magazines in Vietnam have changed dramatically, striving to reach the international scientific journal system of ISI, Scopus. The race to develop and implement autonomous systems and artificial intelligence has challenged the responsiveness of governments in many areas and none more so than in the domain of labour market policy. This article draws upon a large survey of Singaporean employees and managers (N = 332) conducted in 2019 to examine the extent and ways in which artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies have begun impacting workplaces in Singapore. Our conclusions reiterate the need for government intervention to facilitate broad-based participation in the productivity benefits of fourth industrial revolution technologies while also offering re-designed social safety nets and employment protections. This chapter carries out extensive review of literature on the 4th Industrial Revolution. In the last decades, many stakeholders such as industries, governments, employers and employers' organisations, workers and their unions, and academics have expressed divergent opinion of the 4th Industrial Revolution. The 4th industrial revolution is the 4th stage of a mechanical movement process that began towards the end of the 18th century where mechanised production replaced manual production process. Research shows that the 4th Industrial Revolution brought about ‘disruptive technologies' such as artificial intelligence, robotics, blockchain, and 3D printing, which transforms social, economic, and political systems, often in unpredictable ways.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has resulted in the disruption of the world of work whereby technological innovation such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. These disruptions may be creative in that as some jobs are lost due to the development of artificial intelligence, new ones are created. This chapter explored the impact of disruptive technological innovations on the future of work. The skill gaps brought about by the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution was also explored in this chapter.


Most experts consider that society has entered in a Fourth Industrial Revolution that implies ubiquitous changes characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines that differentiate physical, digital, and biological spheres. This implies to open a door to important changes in the teaching and learning of the social sciences, geography, and history. Regarding this, it is necessary that both citizens and organizations develop new skills. Artificial intelligence as education technology is possible due to digital and online tools. Adaptive learning, meanwhile, is related to artificial intelligence, personalizing the learning and offering contents adapted to students. New challenges in the teaching of social sciences extends beyond the learning of facts and events. As a result of changes in society of Fourth Industrial Revolution, thinking-based learning (TBL) with the support of learning and knowledge technologies (LKT), creativity, critical thinking, and cooperation are some of the essential learning goals to participate in society.

What the internet with its connectivity did to facilitate the third industrial revolution, cloud computing and artificial intelligence have done for the fourth industrial revolution. Technology is changing the world at an alarming rate, which includes products and services that require scale to manage the growing demands of an ever-changing and increasing population. Digital transformation is enabled through cloud technology where human comprehension cannot cope with the size and speed of data required to manage a business in the digital economy. Artificial intelligence and machine learning assist in activities to overcome human limitation, using algorithms to develop predictive and simulation models and scale to provide data for decision making. The technologies employed to run and execute these require skill and resource. The challenge for the modern-day CEO is that the use of technology and its demand in the digital economy of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is not fully understood by them due to their digital skill level and managing the generational skill sets in their structure.
