Teaching Critical Thinking Skills to Foster Social-Emotional Learning

Critical thinking, once promoted in classrooms only for gifted and talented students, is now found to be in the curriculum for every student. Why is this the case? We are experiencing a fast and complex shift in the global workforce where many routine and rote skills have been replaced with the need for analytical and communication skills. Today's worker not only has to problem solve on the job but must work collaboratively with others to get the job done efficiently. At the same time, this modern-day worker must learn how to adapt to a constant changing workforce. Therefore, it is important to prepare our students by teaching them how to critically think, a learning skill needed to adequately prepare our students for the 21st century, not just for their future workforce, but for their success in school and their personal, social, and emotional lives.

This study aims to examine the impact of using some of the skills of the (CoRT) program on the development of critical thinking skills among a sample of talented students in King Abdullah II School of Excellence in Tafila Governorate. The sample consisted of 60 male and female students randomly selected. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group that consisted of 30 students exposed to the acquisition of the skills of the CoRT program and the control group that consisted of 30 students who did not study the program. The Watson Glaser critical thinking test was also applied. The results shows a statistically significant effect, at (α≤ 0.05), in improving the critical thinking skills of the students of the experimental group and shows a statistically significant effect on the test of critical thinking skills due to the variable of educational level and for the favor of the ninth grade. The study also reveals that there were no statistically significant differences in the test of critical thinking skills in relation to the the gender variable. The researcher recommends developing the teacher competencies to teach the skills of thinking in general and critical thinking skills, in particular, through the conducting of courses, seminars, and workshops in the CoRT program.

In recent times, studies focusing on the issue of gifted and talented students in Turkey have gained much traction. However, so far, these appear to have been limited in terms of the intervention strategies they offer. The question of how to respond to the social and emotional issues of gifted and talented students remains an issue, which is a source of debate, based on the experiences on the field and the directions offered by the latest studies. While giftedness is associated with positive thoughts and beliefs, these come a number of challenges that require closer examination. Consequently, the aim of this case study is to discuss the social-emotional issues experienced gifted and talented children, with regards to effective intervention programs which are often overlooked and not thoroughly examined. Determining the type of acceleration practice could be a very subjective decision and possible risk and resources should be analyzed in order to determine what is best for the child’s needs. As outlined by this case study, the proper identification of intervention strategies should respond to the problems experienced by students in the social and emotional realm. The review concludes with recommendations that could help school counselors, families and educators in assisting gifted and talented students, based on existing relevant literature.

High fidelity simulation is known to improve problem solving and critical thinking skills as well as professional role acquisitions in nursing students. This descriptive study examined the perceptions of 186 culturally diverse baccalaureate nursing students enrolled in fundamentals of nursing and senior preceptorship courses about their experience in high fidelity simulation activities. Perceptions were examined in relation to the acquisition factors of nursing skills using the Simulation Evaluation Questionnaire and open-ended questions in two simulation labs at the end of each simulation session during academic years 2008-2011. The results indicated that the majority of students agreed or strongly agreed that the simulation experiences helped them prepare for clinical practice. Ninety five percent of the students reported that they were able to reflect on their own simulation experience; and 82% agreed or strongly agreed that they were able to problem solve and critically think while they participated in simulation activities. With the clearly defined scenario objectives, there were better ratings of problem solving and critical thinking of students during the simulation activity (r = 0.61, p < 0.002). Those who had the chance to problem solve and critically think were able to communicate more openly about simulation experiences during debriefing (r = 0.704, p = 000). The most important nursing techniques that they learned from simulation experiences included skills on how to assess patients’ baseline data,communicate with patients/families using interpersonal communications, mediate a person’s frustration efficiently while sticking to the goals, and deal with social aspects of care. Students reported that they least liked about simulations as they felt they were pressed and put on the spot and having to act in front of the class. Suggestions included sufficient scenario activity time and hands-on experiences for the future. Findings suggest that the students valued the high fidelity simulation as an effective medium for improving their clinical skill acquisitions.

ABSTRACTThis research is aimed to know the differences increase critical thinking skills through learning group and individual problem solving in thermochemical material. This research uses a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design and study sample consisted of 103 students, divided into the first experimental (group problem solving) (35 students), the two group experimental (individual problem solving) (34 students). The collected through pretest-posttest. The analyzed with the Kruskal Wallis test, the results showed that the learning problem solving as a group or individually can improve students’ critical thinking skills. Statistical test there are significant differences in the students critical thinking skills thermochemical material between students who received group and individual problem solving. Critical thinking skills improvement with problem solving individual learning higher compared with group learning problem solving.Keywords: problem solving learning, critical thinking skillsABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan peningkatan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa melalui pembelajaran group dan individual problem solving pada materi termokimia. This research is motivated by the competence of teachers in preparing poor learning outcomes tests and has not been able to measure high-level thinking skills, especially critical thinking skills. Therefore the researcher seeks to improve teacher competence in compiling tests on student learning outcomes based on critical thinking skills through academic supervision. This study uses a school action research design that has stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This research was conducted for 2 months starting April 9 to May 17, 2019 for Physics teachers in the 7 target schools. Data is sourced from interviews with teachers and test documents prepared by the teacher. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis through the stages of data collection, data simplification, data presentation, conclusion drawing. Data were analyzed using assessment rubrics adjusted to indicators of critical thinking skills. The results of this study conclude that teacher competence in preparing tests of learning outcomes based on critical thinking skills has increased from the first cycle with a percentage of 61% with sufficient categories to 76% with good categories in cycle II.

Mathematical Critical thinking is one of  mathematical abilities that must be obtained by students. Critical thinking is one of the high order thinking processes that can make concepts in student knowledge.  Students with critical thinking in mathematics learning mostly do rational activities such as interpreting information based on a particular theoretical framework, linking theory with practice, making claims and justifying it, utilizing data in support of argumentation, making relations or relationships between various ideas, asking questions, evaluating knowledge, predict, describe something, analyze, synthesize, and categorize. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Concept-Based Learning Model on the critical thingking mathematical abilities.The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of Concept-Based Learning Model toward mathematics critical thinking ability. The method used in this research is quasi experiment by Randomize Control Group Post Test Only Design with cluster random sampling technique. Indicators of mathematics critical thinking skills measured in this study include providing simple explanations, building basic skills, concluding, making more explanations, and deciding an action. The results showed that the mathematics critical thinking ability of students in the experimental class for the five indicators that being analyze was higher than the ability of students in the control class. A fairly high difference in the indicator showed in give a simple explanation and concluding. and it means that the application of Concept-Based Learning Model significantly influences the  abilities  of students' mathematics critical thinking.
