Crises can be regarded as the nursery of leadership in a way. They have both created new leaders and have also proved to be a testing ground for the existing leaders, as well as a filter where the inefficient have been eliminated. Man-made crises have been classified as social, economical, and political crises up to recent times. With the development of modern markets, new financial tools have emerged. Those financial tools have the function of regulating the modern economy, but also they have the handicap of propagating their own crises from the economic field to social and political areas. In this context, crises give way to radical changes in the management paradigm. In such an environment, the leadership virtues of the previous paradigm period turn out to be insufficient. Institutions used to survive during the crisis periods by employing their crisis management plans. However, crises gain a permanent nature during the modern times and tactical crisis management becomes insufficient in the new environment. The phenomenon of permanent crisis forces leadership to have some special virtues. Therefore, it becomes necessary to define a new type of leadership, namely “strategic crisis leadership.” The aim of this chapter is to examine the impact of crises on leadership virtues and express reflections on the new type of leadership in the new paradigmal period.

Low fertility has become a common problem all over the world. It is the same in East Asia. Japan is the first developed country in East Asia and the first country in East Asia to face the problem of low fertility. The purpose of this paper is to explore how to solve the problem of low fertility in East Asian countries. The solution may be in the case of Japan. In terms of research methods, this paper adopts case analysis and literature analysis. The case analysis of Japan aims to explore the management plans and proposed strategies in the aspects of education faced with declining birth rate and aging industries from the perspective of sustainable development. Population issues are often the root of problems in a country, and any problems related to population will result in a crisis of social stability. Therefore, both China’s One-child policy (population control) and Japan’s declining birth rate and aging response strategies (labor shortage) can be considered cases of crisis management. In conclusion, although low fertility is inevitable, if Japan faces and deals with it step by step, it can reduce the impact of low fertility. The premise is to plan ahead and go through a period of time. In the case of Japan, it took at least 20 years to deal with the problem. And now it is still going on.

Crisis management is a management function that tries to mitigate the impact of crisis events when they occur in a business or organization. Since crises are inevitable, it is important that businesses and organizations have crisis management plans ready for the eventuality of a crisis. Little has been written about crisis in emerging nations. As such, this exploratory study investigates the perceptions and experiences of Vietnamese managers regarding crisis preparedness. The results indicate that a majority of the organizations do not have formal crisis management plans. The results of this study suggest that crisis planning at both the organizational and individual level are needed among Vietnamese businesses.

Organizational crises are inevitable and place a significant demand on resources, diverting firms from their central focus on serving customers. Effective crisis management can minimize the impact of these events on the organization. Recognition and information are two major components of an appropriate crisis management approach; they help organizations respond to crises quickly and effectively. While the crisis management literature is abundant concerning larger organizations in developed nations, little has been written on this subject concerning businesses in emerging countries. This exploratory study examines the perceptions and experiences of Peruvian managers in relation to crisis events. Findings indicate that a majority of these organizations lack adequate crisis preparation, including crisis management plans. Recommendations for management are presented.
