University Business Education for the “New Global Normal”

This chapter examines the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on university business education within the context of a post-pandemic era which has created the “new global normal.” The speed at which a nation's society and economy will recover in the “new global normal” shall largely determine the degree to which business organizations and university business education in different nations reinvent themselves to meet the new global transitions brought on by the pandemic. This will entail being more innovative with products, services, organizational structure, and business modeling than in the past. The chapter suggests university business education focuses on entrepreneurial leadership to combat post-pandemic uncertainty which is a complex situation requiring a delicate “balancing act” between practice and theory that considers its effect on global income inequality to be successful for all societies.

ABSTRACT: I argue that the time has come for management accounting researchers to again consider the orientation of our research. Over the past several decades, the focus of research in management accounting has evolved. Initially, research was heavily influenced by the needs of practice. After the Ford Foundation's initiative to professionalize business education, research became more and more theoretical and inward-facing. At a time when practice is in need of assistance, our current focus has led to research that is primarily intended to enhance current models rather than assist in solving the problems of practice. After arguing that there is a need for a change, I offer several examples of new research areas where management accounting research could assist practice.

The main purpose of this research is to find out the challenges and opportunities that most of the women specifically those who are entrepreneurs are facing these challenges in Sylhet area, Bangladesh. This report mainly depends on some documents and some practical observations. Women Entrepreneurship is a very essential turning point for the betterment of the women. Unlike the past, women today are no longer confined in the kitchen. They have raised their voice against conservative social outlook. Now women are entering into work force which is providing them a self-identity and right to participate in family decisional affairs. In Sylhet a huge number of women are also having various types of business organizations. The women those who are entrepreneurs of Sylhet, almost 35% are engaged in boutique businesses. There are some other businesses performed by them such as fashion house and cloth store, tailor, parlor, training center etc. Most of them have to maintain their family works despite having a business. But here they are not free from problems. The traditionalism of society, high interest rate of loan, lack of proper training facilities are the main barriers in the smoothness of business. Here every women entrepreneurs recommends that the Government should take necessary effective steps in (providing training, low rate of interest in taking loan etc.) this regard, as it is a very potential way to develop the country.

  The aim of this study is to highlight the role that management by exception plays in achieving pioneering leadership and the survival and growth of institutions and trying to increase their effectiveness and performance in light of the great challenges they face. The importance of management is characterized by adding value to the institution, creating a competitive advantage, making the institution more flexible, and adopting the forms of coordination, designing and structuring. The problem of the study is represented in this question: is the application of the concept of management by exception leads to entrepreneurial leadership in business organizations? The study   showed that the entrepreneurial leadership has the ability to influence workers and the performance of institutions. Based on the principles and the basis of modern leadership and management, it is possible for organizations to achieve proactive entrepreneurship among other organizations. by applying entrepreneurial leadership and sorting out the appropriate decisions

This chapter describes the major trends in China’s income inequality over the past forty years and explains them as the outcome of four interleaved stories. The first story is a standard development story characterized by structural change, market development, labour absorption, and the Kuznets inverted-U path of inequality. The second is the economic transition story, in which changes in income distribution result from the shift from plan to market. The third is incomplete transition, with opportunities for rent-seeking, corruption, and hidden income. The fourth is the story of government efforts to moderate inequality through social and welfare policies.

The paper presents results of a descriptive analysis of income distributions as well as top income inequality among women and men in Poland. The analysis is based on the dataset provided by the Council for Social Monitoring (2019). Throughout 2003–2015 their panel survey included, for example, a question on individual net monthly income in the past three months. In order to reduce differences associated with the age of entering and exiting the labour market on declared income levels (especially pensions), the calculations include only women and men aged 25–60 years. The analysis of income distributions of women and men in Poland is based on standard measures such as mean income, median income and related measures, as well as the Gini coefficient, Theil index and entropy index. It is supplemented by kernel density estimates and results of simultaneous quantile regressions that demonstrate differences between women and men across income groups. The analysis of top income inequality includes comparisons of subsamples consisting of top 3% earners in each group. The share of women in the top percentiles is then calculated and discussed. The analysis shows different dynamics related to the incomes of women and men, which provides support for including business cycle considerations in the analysis of income inequalities and their gender aspects.

This chapter explores the various links that exist between growing complexity, corruption, and tax evasion. Over the past three decades corruption and tax evasion seem to have increased in many countries. The growing complexity of tax systems that now require thousands of pages of laws and regulations has clearly been a determining factor. Tax laws have become increasingly difficult to interpret and to comply with. This has created an important asymmetry between clever and rich individuals who have the means to hire tax experts to prepare their tax returns and the rest. This asymmetry has also convinced many taxpayers, especially in Anglo-Saxon countries, that their taxes are higher than they actually are. The complexity and its impact on the taxpayers is likely to have been a contributing factors to the growing income inequality that has characterized recent years.

Singapore has served as a strategic hub of immigration in Southeast Asia over the past two centuries since its founding as an entrepot in 1819. It is not only due to its geographic location at the crossroads between the East and West, but also to its vibrant social and business organizations that have provided effective institutional links both within Southeast Asia and between the region and China. This has, in turn, contributed to the making of Singapore as a key migration corridor among the Chinese diaspora. An overlooked institutional link in this corridor is qiaopi, the remittances-cum-letters sent home by Chinese immigrants from the 1820s to the 1980s, which was part of the intra-regional circulation of capital, goods, people and information. Qiaopi was officially selected into the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO’s) “Memory of the World” Register in 2013, thus demonstrating its heritage significance. This paper examines the role of the qiaopi trade in establishing and consolidating Singapore’s place as the most important migrant corridor in Southeast Asia. It also discusses qiaopi from a transnational perspective of diasporic heritage and its contemporary relevance to the heritage corridor.

Mounting concern over capitalism’s inability to address systemic challenges in our natural world (i.e. climate change) and social world (i.e. income inequality) is prompting reexamination of capitalism within business groups. This article argues that a concurrent reexamination must also take place within the foundations and philosophy of business education. As such, this essay explores nine broad themes for such a transformational reexamination: (1) instill an ethos of management as a calling, (2) rebuild the business school on a system of aspirational principles, (3) de-emphasize the core, (4) move beyond simply monetary measures, (5) train stewards of the market, (6) reexamine the purpose of the corporation, (7) discard misguided metrics and models, (8) bring the government back in, and (9) pay proper attention to citizenship. The article also discusses obstacles to such a grand revisioning, and offers examples that change is underway.

The Jennex and Olfman KM success model was first published at HICSS in 2004 and in the International Journal of Knowledge Management in 2006. Additionally, it was independently verified by Kundapur and Rodrigues, Srivastava and Joshi, and Wang and Yang. Since then there has been many technology changes and innovations as well as further research on KM success. This chapter re-examines the Jennex Olfman model and suggests a newer model that incorporates the past 10 years of research, innovation in organizational structure, and technology innovation.
