The importance of robotics and assistive technologies for healthcare is increasing. For their introduction into practical application, the continuous integration of the user perspective is crucial to ensure acceptance and usability. This can be achieved by the user-centered design approach. In an earlier publication, several problems with its functional implementation within research and development (R&D) projects were pointed out. This chapter discusses possible solutions to promote an effective integration of the user perspective in R&D projects based on six interviews with experts from Germany. The results can be summarized in three main requirements: first, the generation of a common understanding of the target group; second, a scientific research approach considering the context of technology usage; third, projectification, with a focus on efficient resource planning, the development of generic technologies, and technology evaluations with the user group. Leaders of innovative projects can benefit from implementing these strategies in the development process.

Abstract Influenza is an infectious disease that leads to an estimated 5 million severe illness cases and 650,000 respiratory deaths worldwide each year. Early detection and prediction of influenza outbreaks are crucial to efficient resource planning to save patients’ lives and healthcare costs. This paper proposes a novel data-driven methodology for influenza outbreaks detection and prediction. The doctor’s diagnosis-based prescription dataset of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) from more than 3,000 clinics in Malaysia is used in this study because the prescription data are reliable and can be captured timely. A new Region Index (RI) of the influenza outbreak is proposed based on the prescription dataset. With the newly proposed RI metric, statistical and machine learning models are developed to detect and predict influenza outbreaks. Cross-validation is conducted to evaluate the prediction model performance. The proposed methods are also validated by real-world evidence. It is proved to be sensitive and accurate in influenza outbreak prediction with 80-90% accuracy, 70-80% recall, and 70-80% precision scores.

Multiple resource planning is a very crucial undertaking for most organizations. Apart from reducing operational complexity, multiple resource planning facilitates efficient allocation of resources, which reduces costs by minimizing the cost of tardiness and the cost for additional capacity. The current research investigates multiple resource loading problems (MRLP). MRLPs are very prevalent in today’s organizational environments and are particularly critical for organizations that handle concurrent, time-intensive, and multiple-resource projects. Using data obtained from the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs (ADLSA), a MRLP is proposed. The problem utilizes data regarding staff, time, equipment, and finance to ensure efficient resource allocation among competing projects. In particular, the research proposes a novel model and solution approach for the MRLP. Computational experiments are then performed on the model. The results show that the model performs well, even for higher instances. The positive results attest to the effectiveness of the proposed MRLP problem.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an ontology of eco or natural assets to represent eco asset knowledge at two levels: eco asset metal model and eco asset ontology (EA_Onto). The three objectives of this paper are to: define eco assets explicitly to reach a common understanding of the terms; evaluate the ontology; and discuss a potential area of application. Design/methodology/approach A seven-step methodology was used to develop the proposed ontology: define the scope; develop the eco asset meta model (EA_MM), define taxonomy, code ontology, capture ontology, evaluate ontology and document ontology. Findings The EA_MM was developed to represent eco asset domain knowledge, which was further extended to develop the EA_Onto, explicitly defining the eco asset knowledge in asset management. As a part of evaluation, it was found that the knowledge representation is consistent, concise, clear, complete and correct. Practical implications Theoretically, the proposed ontology is a significant contribution to the body of knowledge in asset management. Practically, the knowledge representation provides a common understanding of eco assets for asset management experts. In addition, it will be used in applications for effective eco asset management. Originality/value The current literature lacks explicit declaration of eco assets, how they are related to built environment for effective integration and how asset management functions are to be applied to accomplish effective eco asset management. Presently, eco assets are managed on an ad hoc basis, which need to be explicitly defined through developing an EA_Onto for implementation in applications for effective eco asset management.

This paper develops a framework for analyzing organizational change in information technology (IT) departments of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and applies that framework to a case study of a German airport that is majority-owned by the German federal government. Specifically, we derive a framework from literature to systematically identify transformation barriers for introducing new enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and business processes in IT departments of SOEs. This framework is based on the punctuated equilibrium model and considers dynamic process incorporation, explicit stakeholder integration, a detailed representation of the change process, and characteristics of public employees as main factors. We then apply the framework in a case study research approach and show how the framework allows identification of transformation barriers hidden to management but involved in the organizational change process (e.g., required change of organizational structures, required change of service-level-agreements). The framework can be a valuable tool for both researchers and practitioners to actively shape the effects of organizational transformation in SOEs and to identify factors that influence the change process.

In spite of the importance of implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in any organization, there are still many fears of not getting the return on investment from implementing it. In addition, there are many ERP systems implemented in different organizations that claim they did not get enough benefit from these systems. For this reason, this paper is intended to study the impact of ERP implementation approaches (Agile, Big Bang, and Hybrid) on the performance of Procure-to-Pay business processes. This paper adapts the quantitative research approach by using the survey strategy, which is conducted by a questionnaire collected from 91 respondents working in fifteen companies that implement Oracle ERP in Jordan. The researcher uses the SPSS as an analysis technique to test all hypotheses. The findings of the study show that the two ERP Implementation approaches (Big Bang and Hybrid) have a significant impact on the performance of Procure-to-Pay business processes. On the other hand, the study shows that Agile (ERP) implementation approach has no significant impact on the performance of Procure-to-Pay business processes.

This study examines the components of construction projects and whether there are construction resources that are the key project constituents. The rationale for the study stems from the unexplained assumptions regarding the primary components responsible for increases in construction costs in South Africa, as South Africa lacks a national building cost database. The study adopts a qualitative research approach that employs a case studies of six new and six refurbished projects in obtaining the necessary data for use in answering the study objectives. The study found that the primary cost constituents of construction projects are materials and sub-contracted work, accounting for 63.69% and 74.6% of the value of renovation and new construction work respectively and on the average, the major materials by value are reinforcement, cement and filling, while Electrical Installation is the primary sub-contracting item by value. Based on these findings, the study concludes that the future levels of construction work can be predicted knowing levels of specialist sub-contractor costs and building material costs. The study recommends that the sub-contractor and material inputs into construction projects are carefully managed, both on the projects and the construction industry, to limit construction cost increases and cost overruns on projects. Islamic economic thought became increasingly prevalent with the birth of various schools of thought in Islamic economics. One of them is the critical alternative school that was pioneered by Timur Kuran. This research will discuss from Islamic economics to the urgency of prohibiting usury; an offer of the East Kuran Islamic economy. With the aim of knowing and analyzing the extent to which Eastern Kuran's economic thought made significant contributions to the development of contemporary Islamic economics. This research is a qualitative research with a library research approach and all data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis methods. The results of this study indicate that Timur Kuran is one of the pioneers of the Critical alternative school which critically studies various concepts of Islamic economics and banking. Various forms of economic thought such as from the concept of Islamic economics are none other than modern doctrines that offer alternatives to the economic systems of Capitalism and Socialism. The emergence of an Islamic economy was none other than political-cultural, with the largest contribution coming from Pakistanis, zakat is a more effective safety net than a secular redistribution system and the waqf system does not yet have the flexibility needed for efficient resource use, and the Qur'an prohibits the practice of usury which involves compounding the debt of a loan that is unable to make payments according to a predetermined schedule.

Organizations rely on various types of information systems (IS) to manage day-to-day business and make decisions such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM) systems. Organizations rely on ERP systems to replace their legacy systems, integrate core business processes and to help adding value and increasing visibility. Additionally, SCM systems help organizations to enhance relationships with supply chain members. It is essential for organizations to measure their business performance by taking into consideration intra-organizational and inter-organizational indicators. Therefore, the integration between ERP and SCM systems is a key to enable more business performance; that were otherwise hidden. Accordingly, the motive for this paper is to study the influence of ERP-SCM integration on enabling more business performance measures. For this reason, a business performance measures framework was constructed and then tested on two organizations using multi-case study qualitative research approach. Analysis results indicated that integrating ERP and SCM systems would render more performance measures and hence enable better and wider-scope evaluation. Consequently, managers are more informed and accordingly are able to make high quality decisions.

This chapter aims to offer some general thoughts on the development and use of intelligent assistive technologies in dementia. Based on an analysis of ethical principles and concepts, guidelines, recommendations, and codes of conduct in the field broadly construed, the text argues for an approach that takes the user perspective, in particular the users’ abilities, wishes, and goals, more clearly into consideration in intelligent assistive technology development and use. Although the reflections may have implications for caregivers, family members, and others involved in the care of persons with dementia, they are not so much intended to guide individual, patient-directed decision making as to address future directions for technology development and use in a more general way.
