COVID-19 and future pandemics drastically change the way of life globally. Research has predominantly focused on the use and integration of disruptive technologies in industry and commerce. Little of the recent studies focused on the implementation of artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies in educational applications. The chapter focuses on how these can be implemented, from development, deployment, use, and maintenance of applications. A computer program's lifespan is usually spent during its use. The qualitative case study was administered using a digital learning platform that provides interactive learning for primary and secondary learners. The disruptive technologies inform new teaching methodologies and the development of student-centered algorithms for learning. Further research includes privacy issues in the implementation of disruptive technologies and data-sharing governance issues and evaluating the effectiveness of artificial intelligence and blockchain-based learning platforms.

In this article, we present the first systematic study of how teachers design courses in the newly implemented digital learning platforms in Denmark. The study is based on the collection and double coding of the 102 most downloaded course designs in the learning platform Meebook. The descriptive data is analysed in the light of Meebook’s affordances, previous research and didactical theory. Our analysis focusses on the three main intentions of the introduction of learning platforms for K9-schools. This concerns firstly the use of learning objectives and their assessment, secondly the use of the platform in relation to the intention of sharing teacher-created course designs and thirdly the question of how teachers deal with the integration of multimodal learning materials in the course design. On one hand, the course builder in Meebook seems to affect teachers’ course designs strongly, and on the other hand, the course builder does not facilitate didactical reasoning and coherence. The results of the study have potential implications for platform designers, local school authorities and headmasters who deal with the implementation of platforms as well as teachers that daily use such course builders for teaching and the students’ learning.

Adaptive learning platforms that individualize each learner's experience according to their input have only recently become widely accessible. This chapter illustrates some of the potential of adaptive learning platforms and describes a case study where this emerging technology has been used with physiotherapy students in a simulated clinical setting. Aspects of patient care scenarios presented with an adaptive learning platform were interleaved with live simulated patient interactions. Evaluation of the projects and the benefits and challenges of using adaptive learning platforms in biomedical education are discussed.

PurposeStudies on academic entrepreneurship (AE) agree on the significant impact that Universities can have on entrepreneurial development. AE deploys through fundamental activities, like the start-up of new companies and the connection of the University with Enterprises. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the role of digital learning platforms (DLP) to connect Universities and Enterprises effectively. Although the literature has extensively investigated DLP, there is a lack of understanding of the role of DLP in supporting digital AE. This paper focuses, in particular, on the functional requirements that have to distinguish the development of DLPs supporting education-based activities of knowledge transfer between academia and enterprise.Design/methodology/approachThe research is carried out, adopting a case study methodology. A single and holistic case regarding a DLP developed for the strategic and exclusive deployment of AE activities is proposed to describe and discuss the functional requirements of such Platform.FindingsThe DLP is a virtual learning space in which Enterprises and Universities can interact. The definition of design requirements is crucial for the efficacy of DLPs and needs to be carefully supported. Various criteria are proposed, respect to the various stakeholders engaged in DAE learning platform (Universities, Enterprises, students, employees), and according to the short- and long-term objectives of Universities and Entrepreneurship connection.Originality/valueThe paper explores an original case of DLP established in AE, to connect Universities and Enterprises. The research also sheds light on the under focussed typology of AE activities regarding education-based knowledge exchange. They are currently unaddressed by the literature on AE.

In this chapter we propose functional specifications and a component-based architecture for designing e-learning platforms. An important feature is that the proposed specifications and architecture are based on the experience gained in an e-learning company and result from a reengineering process. To guide the reengineering process, we used two reference models, which are the e-learning global process and the e-learning global cycle. The functional specifications are described according to the e-learning global cycle phases and they are used to propose a software component based architecture. The proposed kernel of components was completed with services to allow interoperability and standard compliance between several e-learning platforms. We hope that this case-study exemplifies e-learning platform suppliers’ needs and available pragmatic solutions. We conclude on foreseeable evolutions of e-learning actors needs and practices and on new platform features for fulfilling such needs.

As reported by the UN, the COVID-19 pandemic has touched almost 1.5 billion students forcing school cessations in 191 countries, changing the daily-routine of over 63 million teachers. While UNESCO and partners launched the Global Educational Coalition to produce solutions to “make digital learning more inclusive,” aiming at helping countries to gather resources to implement “remote education through hi-tech, low-tech and no-tech approaches,” a lot of actors have been holding webinars on the educational challenges and dimension of the pandemic, with participants enrolled from all over the world, from East to West.The European Association for International Education, through its EAIE Community Moment and EAIE Webinar Academy organized virtual meetings on a range of subjects, COVID19 response, mobilities and international students’ recruitment, the regional Francophone center for Central and Eastern Europe organized webinars on how to teach online the Francophonie today, the Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe has constantly published updates on distant learning tools or MOOCs courses.While the webinars discuss strategies to maintain education continuity, considering children and young people in need, presenting to professors and educators a wide variety of tools, there are quite a few discussing the pedagogy of online education. Although educators have been sharing debates and exchanging opinions in reference to the e-learning platforms for more than ten years now, this very situation made them found themselves obliged to embrace, at last, the distant online learning. So, from hypothetical, theoretical, or, in some happy cases, complementary mode of e-learning platform teaching and learning, we quickly moved to the reality that imposed immediate response, within modern technology tools’ use in order to make our students carry on with their studies. And here comes the real challenge! Moving to the e-learning platforms does not mean relocating your lesson from the textbook to an educational e-learning platform, but rather translating pedagogy strategy into tool-adapted, computer-assisted online education that shall surely ease our task to reach the proposed objectives, if we are opened to change! In this paper, we will address these issues based on our teaching experience through the pandemic.

Представлен взгляд авторов на более широкую трактовку дефиниции цифровой образовательной платформы. Накопленный опыт работы использовании ФГОС 3++ показывает, что цифровая платформа – это не столько программное решение, реализующее для пользователей различного уровня подготовки доступ к обучающему материалу, сколько система, позволяющая проектировать и реализовать образовательные программы с учетом требований федеральных образовательных стандартов, а также обеспечить эффективную подготовку специалистов через индивидуализацию образовательных траекторий. Результат статьи — это обобщение опыта авторов по разработке магистерских программ и их реализации в тесном сотрудничестве университета и градообразующего предприятия. Систематизированы подходы к формированию фреймворка компетенций и их реализации через смешанный формат обучения. Решение обозначенной проблемы не представляется возможным без применения новых подходов к описанию (формализации) области исследования. На основании публикаций по рассматриваемому вопросу, с учетом перспективности использования семантического анализа жизненного цикла образовательной программы рекомендуется применение онтологического моделирования. Результаты проведенного исследования могут быть использованы преподавателями-практиками при разработке курсов дисциплин, которые могут быть имплементированы в цифровую образовательную платформу. The paper presents our approach to an extended definition of the digital learning platform. The experience with the national educational standards (FGOS3++) shows that a digital platform is not just the software to access the educational content, but most of all a system intended to design and offer education programs compliant to FGOS for highquality training through individual curricula. The paper covers the outcomes of our experience with Master’s curriculum development and delivery in collaboration between the university and the large business. We implemented an approach to create a competence framework and offer it as blended learning. Solving this problem requires new approaches to the research area formalization. After analyzing the existing research and considering excellent prospects for semantic analysis of the education program lifecycle we recommend using ontology modeling. Results of the research can be used by tutors who develop courses for digital learning platforms.

This study is a descriptive case study that tries to follow the students’ learning process in using Quipper, an e-learning platform to prepare them for the upcoming Computer-based National Examination. During the length of the research, the students’ perception of Quipper as a practice tool will be gathered and presented, along with the aspects that need to be further developed in the future, and students’ suggestions on how to develop Quipper into an e-learning platform with better functionality. Results of the study revealed that the students have positive perception towards Quipper with several notes about the need to revisit the functionalities and user interface according to what most students would be comfortable with as users. Further, the study also revealed critiques from the students for Quipper’s future developments. Finally, on the basis of the critiques, some suggestions were also given by the students participated in this study. The suggestions consisted of conducting more research on another level of educations besides junior high school to get the overall idea of what the users from all age range need and also the need to conduct research on several other e-learning platforms.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a subject that measures usability and evaluates the interface of a system, software, or product to see its efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction. On the other hand, at the time, the pandemic spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) having an immense impact on schools, universities, and other educational sectors. In this current unpredictable situation, the importance of online education is visible, therefore, the usability of e-learning platforms truly plays an essential role in our lives. This study is about to evaluate the usability of a very common e-learning portal i.e., Khan Academy by user testing and heuristic evaluation techniques. Effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction of Khan Academy were measured quantitatively, while usability issues were identified qualitatively through heuristic evaluation. The study result shows that Khan Academy suffers from certain usability problems which need to be addressed. The study also presents relevant recommendations which are scrutinized and approved by IT specialists and UI/UX designers. The study concluded that suggested amendments are important to consider enhancing the usability of different e-Learning portals generally and Khan Academy particularly.
