Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASN) play a crucial role in various applications such as tsunami detection, surveillance of the ocean by the defense department, monitoring offshore oil, and identifying gas basins underwater. UASNs can be one of the supporting infrastructures for the Internet of Things (IoT). UASNs have the problems of long latency, high bit error rate, and low bandwidth. These pose various challenges such as high consumption of energy, low reliability, low packet retransmission, and high delay for UASNs. To overcome the shortcomings mentioned above, various approaches are suggested. This article proposes a multi-layer fuzzy logic cluster-based energy-efficient routing protocol for UASNs. It splits the network area into equal sized rings. The priority number (PRN) is utilized for all underwater cluster heads (UCHs). Based on the highest PRN, the UCH starts communicating among UCHs. Here, the PRN makes the task very selective avoiding collisions and also reducing propagation delays. The cluster formation is done by sending a message to all underwater cluster members (UCMs) and the selection of UCH and UCM are done. Each has a threshold value. The intra-ring clustering process splits a ring into equal-sized clusters. Additionally, inter-cluster routing applies the fuzzy logic metrics to choose the optimum data route in transferring the data from the underwater cluster head (UCH) to the sink node (SN). It is tested using Aqua-Sim simulation which is based on NS2. It is compared with an existing protocol such as multi-layer cluster energy efficient (MLCEE), depth-based routing (DBR), energy efficient DBR (EEDBR). The results prove that it has improved energy efficiency, packet delivery ratio, throughput, and the network's lifetime.

Floods account for 15% of all natural disasters related deaths. Therefore, early flood warning systems using wireless network of sensors installed in flood prone areas is necessary to provide early notice of impending flood. This research focuses on the use of an energy efficient routing protocol to prolong the life time of the Network. The importance of this is to minimize energy consumption as necessary for reliable field operations. It adopts the use of mandami Fuzzy logic-based data controlled routing protocol (F-DCRP).Simulation was carried out for the F-DCRP, LEACH and Crisp Data controlled routing protocol (DCRP). The performance of the three protocols were obtained and compared. The result showed that Cluster head (CH) load was better shared uniformly among all the nodes. Percentage of packets dropped showed that the proposed F-DCRP was 10% lower compared to DCRP and 50% lower compared to LEACH resulting in more packets sent per round and greater reliability compared to LEACH and DCRP. The network lifetime was also improved by 40 % when compared to LEACH and DCRP.

Energy preservation is one of the most important research challenges in Wireless Senor Networks (WSNs). In recent research, topologies and architectures have investigated that allow energy efficiency in WSNs. Clustering is one of the most famous energy efficient techniques. In clustering, the selection of cluster head (CH) and short distance multi-hop energy efficient communication between CH and base station (BS) plays a vital role in order to achieve the desired energy efficiency in the sensor network. In this energy saving solution, we purpose and combine the idea of fuzzy logic based CH selection and multihop short distance communication between CH and base station in order to prolong the stable period and life span of network. Our proposed routing protocol, Fuzzy Logic based Multihop Energy Efficient Routing Protocol (FMEEP) for Heterogeneous WSN, which uses fuzzy logic inference system (FIS) in order to select a qualified CH in the cluster formation process and minimizes the overall energy dissipation in the sensor network. The simulation results have shown that purposed routing scheme outperforms in terms of stability period and network lifetime as compared to previous routing protocols.

Abstract Appropriate cluster head selection can significantly reduce energy consumption and enhance the lifetime of the WSN. The choice of cluster heads, which is a pivotal step in the cluster-based algorithm, can seriously influence the performance of the clustering algorithm. Under normal circumstances, whether a node can be a cluster head or not depends not only on its energy level but also on the other factors such as energy consumption, channel lost, neighbor density, etc. In this sense, the selection of the cluster head can be regarded as a multiple criteria decision-making issue. This paper presents an Energy efficient Cluster Head selection using Fuzzy Logic (ECHFL) protocol, which combines the approaches of the fuzzy and IDA-star algorithm. This protocol selects the appropriate cluster head by using fuzzy inference rules. It uses three parametric descriptors such as residual energy, expected residual energy, and node centrality for the cluster formation and cluster head selection processes. These parameters contribute mainly for avoiding over-dissipation of energy in the network by selecting the suitable cluster head for the network. This protocol shows how fuzzy logic can be used in the cluster formation process to distribute the tasks and energy consumption over all the nodes. As a summary, the proposed protocol gives good performance results in comparison with the other protocols.

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of low cost tiny sensor nodes with limited energy resource, so it is a tedious task to develop energy efficient routing schemes that enhances the network lifetime. In WSN, clustering is used to improve the efficiency of finite energy resource. LEACH protocol is one of the widely used clustering techniques in WSN. So, in this paper, an energy efficient LEACH protocol is designed with network coding for WSN. Initially, the clusters are formed with the LEACH protocol, where it uses the residual energy metric and drain rate to select the cluster heads.  Since network coding is an optimal technique to enhance the network performance by minimizing the number of transmissions, it is incorporated into the LEACH Protocol, where it has been applied at the cluster head levels. Furthermore, the next level of network coding is processed at a node by selecting any of the nodes as a master node. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme performs better than the EE-LEACH and LEACH protocol in terms of network lifetime, packet delivery ratio.

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks are widely used due to its usage and advantages because it can utilize in mission critical tasks. One of the major issues in WSN is reliable data delivery without any loss and to increase network lifetime by utilizing energy efficient process. The objective of this work is to increase network lifetime at the same time ensuring high packet delivery ratio. Clustering is one of the best methods to increase network lifetime, however election process of cluster head will consume energy and reduces network performance. Therefore in proposed work, energy efficient cluster based routing protocol has been implemented which includes residual energy and distance as major parameter to form cluster. Cluster head selection will be a static process, once cluster is formed cluster head will be selected through election process after transaction the residual energy in CH will be checked with the threshold value and same CH will again act as head this reduces cluster formation and election process. In addition to provide secure data transaction MD5 algorithm has been implemented. Attack based data loss is also reduced and concentrated in proposed work to achieve objective of this work. Keywords: (SSCHS) Secure static cluster head selection, network lifetime, cluster, MD5 and Static cluster head.

Background: An information gathering is a typical and important task in agriculture monitoring and military surveillance. In these applications, minimization of energy consumption and maximization of network lifetime have prime importance for green computing. As wireless sensor networks comprise of a large number of sensors with limited battery power and deployed at remote geographical locations for monitoring physical events, therefore it is imperative to have minimum consumption of energy during network coverage. The WSNs help in accurate monitoring of remote environment by collecting data intelligently from the individual sensors. Objective: The paper is motivated from green computing aspect of wireless sensor network and an Energy-efficient Weight-based Coverage Enhancing protocol using Genetic Algorithm (WCEGA) is presented. The WCEGA is designed to achieve continuously monitoring of remote areas for a longer time with least power consumption. Method: The cluster-based algorithm consists two phases: cluster formation and data transmission. In cluster formation, selection of cluster heads and cluster members areas based on energy and coverage efficient parameters. The governing parameters are residual energy, overlapping degree, node density and neighbor’s degree. The data transmission between CHs and sink is based on well-known evolution search algorithm i.e. Genetic Algorithm. Conclusion: The results of WCEGA are compared with other established protocols and shows significant improvement of full coverage and lifetime approximately 40% and 45% respectively.

Nowadays, there is a growing trend in smart cities. Therefore, Terrestrial and Internet of Things (IoT) enabled Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (TWSNs and IoT-UWSNs) are mostly used for observing and communicating via smart technologies. For the sake of collecting the desired information from the underwater environment, multiple acoustic sensors are deployed with limited resources, such as memory, battery, processing power, transmission range, etc. The replacement of resources for a particular node is not feasible due to the harsh underwater environment. Thus, the resources held by the node needs to be used efficiently to improve the lifetime of a network. In this paper, to support smart city vision, a terrestrial based “Away Cluster Head with Adaptive Clustering Habit” (ACH) 2 is examined in the specified three dimensional (3-D) region inside the water. Three different cases are considered, which are: single sink at the water surface, multiple sinks at water surface,, and sinks at both water surface and inside water. “Underwater (ACH) 2 ” (U-(ACH) 2 ) is evaluated in each case. We have used depth in our proposed U-(ACH) 2 to examine the performance of (ACH) 2 in the ocean environment. Moreover, a comparative analysis is performed with state of the art routing protocols, including: Depth-based Routing (DBR) and Energy Efficient Depth-based Routing (EEDBR) protocol. Among all of the scenarios followed by case 1 and case 3, the number of packets sent and received at sink node are maximum using DEEC-(ACH) 2 protocol. The packets drop ratio using TEEN-(ACH) 2 protocol is less when compared to other algorithms in all scenarios. Whereas, for dead nodes DEEC-(ACH) 2 , LEACH-(ACH) 2 , and SEP-(ACH) 2 protocols’ performance is different for every considered scenario. The simulation results shows that the proposed protocols outperform the existing ones.

Designing an energy-efficient scheme in a Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network (HWSN) is a critical issue that degrades the network performance. Recharging and providing security to the sensor devices is very difficult in an unattended environment once the energy is drained off. A Clustering scheme is an important and suitable approach to increase energy efficiency and transmitting secured data which in turn enhances the performance in the network. The proposed algorithm Energy Efficient Clustering (EEC) works for optimum energy utilization in sensor nodes. The algorithm is proposed by combining the rotation-based clustering and energy-saving mechanism for avoiding the node failure and prolonging the network lifetime. This shows MAC layer scheduling is based on optimum energy utilization depending on the residual energy. In the proposed work, a densely populated network is partitioned into clusters and all the cluster heads are formed at a time and selected on rotation based on considering the highest energy of the sensor nodes. Other cluster members are accommodated in a cluster based on Basic Cost Maximum flow (BCMF) to allow the cluster head for transmitting the secured data. Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), a contention window based protocol is used at the MAC layer for collision detection and to provide channel access prioritization to HWSN of different traffic classes with reduction in End to End delay, energy consumption, and improved throughput and Packet delivery ratio(PDR) and allowing the cluster head for transmission without depleting the energy. Simulation parameters of the proposed system such as Throughput, Energy, and Packet Delivery Ratio are obtained and compared with the existing system.
