A Hybrid Heuristic for QoS Aware Matching of User's Job and Virtual Machines in Cloud Environment

Cloud computing is a technological advancement that provides services in the form of utility on a pay-per-use basis. As the cloud market is expanding, numerous service providers are joining the cloud platform with their services. This creates an indecision amongst the users to choose an appropriate service provider especially when the cloud provider provisions diverse type of virtual machines. The problem becomes more challenging when the user has different jobs requiring specific quality of service. To address the aforementioned problem, this article applies a hybrid heuristic using College Admission Problem and Analytical Hierarchical Process for stable matching of the users' job with the cloud's virtual machines. The case study depicts the effectiveness of the proposed model.

This paper aims to measure the quality of the services delivered by a court by assessing the satisfaction of court users and service providers, i.e., magistrates and court officials. For that purpose, a case study was carried out and data were collected by means of a questionnaire based on the SERVPERF instrument, in which perceived service quality is measured, considering court users, magistrates, and court officials’ perceptions of post-service performance. One hundred and fifty-eight questionnaires were successfully returned. An in-depth interview was later conducted to the court administrator to gain a richer understanding of the results achieved and ask follow-up questions. Overall, findings revealed that court users, magistrates, and court officials clearly have a positive view of the services provided, although improvement is needed, particularly in the court’s facilities and technological equipment. The current research sheds some light on the potentialities and difficulties of assessing service quality in the judiciary and contributes to the validation of the SERVPERF instrument in this context.

Video quality evaluation needs a combined approach that includes subjective and objective metrics, testing, and monitoring of the network. This paper deals with the novel approach of mapping quality of service (QoS) to quality of experience (QoE) using QoE metrics to determine user satisfaction limits, and applying QoS tools to provide the minimum QoE expected by users. Our aim was to connect objective estimations of video quality with the subjective estimations. A comprehensive tool for the estimation of the subjective evaluation is proposed. This new idea is based on the evaluation and marking of video sequences using the sentinel flag derived from spatial information (SI) and temporal information (TI) in individual video frames. The authors of this paper created a video database for quality evaluation, and derived SI and TI from each video sequence for classifying the scenes. Video scenes from the database were evaluated by objective and subjective assessment. Based on the results, a new model for prediction of subjective quality is defined and presented in this paper. This quality is predicted using an artificial neural network based on the objective evaluation and the type of video sequences defined by qualitative parameters such as resolution, compression standard, and bitstream. Furthermore, the authors created an optimum mapping function to define the threshold for the variable bitrate setting based on the flag in the video, determining the type of scene in the proposed model. This function allows one to allocate a bitrate dynamically for a particular segment of the scene and maintains the desired quality. Our proposed model can help video service providers with the increasing the comfort of the end users. The variable bitstream ensures consistent video quality and customer satisfaction, while network resources are used effectively. The proposed model can also predict the appropriate bitrate based on the required quality of video sequences, defined using either objective or subjective assessment.

Mobile money is an electronic wallet service that allows users to store, send and receive money using their mobile phone. This research is an effort to find out the adoption and utilization of mobile money services in small sized enterprises located in Gaborone, Botswana. Inevitably, other aspects such as different types of transactions carried out using mobile money services in small business, customer’s perception on quality of mobile money service providers, impeding factors of mobile money adoption are also studied for wider understanding of the subject. The findings of the study show that small enterprises use mobile money services to carryout transactions but the level of adoption is not significant. The study revealed that transactional costs and connectivity issues are major barriers of adoption of mobile money services. In conclusion the study recommended that the service providers must improve the connectivity issues and reduce transaction charges in order to increase the utilization of mobile money services

To order to raise chickens for meat, chicken farmers must select an appropriate breed and determine how many broilers to raise in each henhouse. This study proposes a mathematical programming model to develop a production planning and harvesting schedule for chicken farmers. The production planning comprises the number of batches of chickens to be raised in each henhouse, the number of chicks to be raised for each batch, what breed of chicken to raise, when to start raising and the duration of the raising period. The harvesting schedule focuses on when to harvest and how many broilers to harvest each time. Our aim was to develop proper production and harvesting schedules that enable chicken farmers to maximise profits over a planning period. The problem is a highly complicated one. We developed a hybrid heuristic approach to address the issue. The computational results have shown that the proposed model can help chicken farmers to deal with the problems of chicken-henhouse assignment, chicken raising and harvesting, and may thus contribute to increasing profits. A case study of a chicken farmer in Yunlin County (Taiwan) was carried out to illustrate the application of the proposed model. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted to explore the influence of parameter variations.

Bus services are a fundamental component of transportation networks in Latin America, but buses often account for a disproportionately large number of environmental externalities. Electric buses (e-buses) are emerging as an effective and pragmatic option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and local pollutants. However, e-buses are difficult to procure in Latin America because of existing procurement challenges in the region, especially as those challenges relate to forming contracts to deal with high upfront costs and unknown risks. To overcome these procurement issues, this paper presents a new contractual model, based on literature and case study research. This new model suggests the separation of bus service responsibilities into three separate actors: multiple bus procurement companies, one or multiple bus depots and charging infrastructure companies, and multiple bus operating companies. By separating bus service responsibilities, the proposed model would bring about three concrete improvements: lower costs to the transit system, better quality of service, and lower-emission fleet deployment.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to focus on the assembly quality of copier products, specifically, concentrating on the prediction of the operator‐induced assembly defect.Design/methodology/approachBased on the Shibata model, the design‐based assembly complexity is redesigned. And the Sony Standard Time is replaced by the Fuji Xerox Standard Time in the calculation of the process‐based assembly complexity. Furthermore, different correlation functions are attempted and comparatively studied in the regression analysis. Thereby, a new defect rate prediction model is proposed and validated with three copier assembly cases.FindingsThe new proposed model is much more accurate and stable in the human‐induced assembly defect prediction in copier production.Practical implicationsThe proposed model can be used to ensure the assembly quality by removing potential defects at the structure and process design stages. Meanwhile, with this model, the interactions between the engineers and designers can be more effective.Originality/valueThis paper presents a novel assembly defect rate prediction model for copier assembly quality management.

The paper provides a multiple-experts Fuzzy-TOPSIS decision-making model for the selection among maintenance contractors based on the quality of tendering documents. The study introduces a set of selection criteria utilizing benefit and cost criteria from literature. The proposed model aggregates subjective linguistic assessments of multiple experts that express their opinions on the degree of importance of criteria and allows multiple decisionmakers to evaluate the compliance of contractors’ documents. For a case study, the model is applied to select among contractors tendering to maintain the heavy-duty cranes of an international steel company from literature. Several decision-making scenarios are investigated, and major changes in the final decision are observed. The changes in obtained results illustrate the need to better address uncertainties in rating and tendering an overqualified contractor at a higher cost.

With the development of modular manufacturing technology and diversified demand for products, the demand for differential warranty service has become increasingly prominent. This article proposes a differential service strategy for two-dimensional warranty using warranty claim data under consumer-side modularisation. In contrast to previous research that optimised maintenance strategies under a given failure density function, this article obtains actual usage rate and failure density functions of main failure types by determining the function type and parameter fitting. A detailed case study of a product under a two-dimensional warranty is discussed to interpret the proposed model. Using the mathematical model proposed in this research, warranty service providers can offer consumers a differential warranty service under consumer-side modularisation.

Background: The Open Cloud Computing Alliance (OCCA) strives for more Cloud Computing Service Providers (CCSP) to join the alliance. OCCA only requires CCSP to provide virtual computing resources and does not care about the methods of the underlying implementation, which leads the open-source cloud computing to a larger scale and more efficient. Due to the differences in service modes and service categories, the cloud computing platforms formed by CCSP are heterogeneous. How to implement tasks across platforms and ensure the quality of migration are the key issue for sharing the OCCA platform. Methods: The Mobile Agent technology based on a domain is introduced. User tasks are encapsulated into Mobile agent packets by domain client, which realizes the migration of user tasks from one platform to another, and makes it possible to interoperate between OCCA virtual machines. To ensure the service quality of OCCA better, a five-layer logical model of R-OCCA with high commercial availability is proposed, which defines the service content of each layer and gives the setting of key parameters. This paper introduces the architectural composition and operational mechanism of the model, which carries out a qualitative analysis of the model, and establishes an experimental prototype to verify the feasibility of the model on the virtual machine platform. Results: Experiments show that it is feasible to implement Cloud Computing Alliance among cloud computing platforms through Mobile Agent under the existing technical conditions. Conclusion: To better guarantee the quality of OCCA service, a five-level R-OCCA logic model with strong commercial availability is proposed. The service content of each level is defined and the key parameters are given. From the CCSP income, the rationality of the model set is explained. The feasibility of the model was analyzed. The architectural composition and operational mechanisms of the model are introduced. The performance of the model was also analyzed.

Various industrial and business sectors use Software-as-a-Service due to its fast services. However, Software-as-a-Service providers face various challenges in providing high-quality services while simultaneously managing vast multi-tenant infrastructure models and increasingly complex user requirements. To address these problems, we identified those factors that affect the quality of Software-as-a-Service from the perspective of provider–user relationship and investigated how service providers can objectively improve user satisfaction. In a case study, we evaluated the perceived service quality of an information system in the public sector based on user satisfaction with the quality of external outsourcing service in terms of assurance, empathy, responsiveness, reliability, and communication. We identified new sub factors (commitment, skills, effectiveness, change management, business processes, and motivation) and proposed action steps that can guide best practices in ensuring Software-as-a-Service quality. These factors are greatly influenced by the communication between providers and users.
