Data analysis in goat production, such as those related to body and scrotal measurements, indicate the productive and reproductive animal development. The current study aimed to evaluate the correlations between thoracic perimeter (TP), body length (BL), body compacity (BC), body volume (BV), and scrotal circumference (SC) with body weight (BW) in young male goats of Saanen and Boer breeds. It was used 38 Saanen and 24 Boer male goats, with age average of 7.2 ± 2.0 months. Thoracic perimeter and body length measurements were obtained using a tape measure (cm) and the live weight (kg) a mechanic scale. The variables body compacity (BC) and body volume (BV) were calculated using the equations:  and . Boer breed showed live weight and body compacity higher than Saanen breed (p < 0.05). Regarding correlations between biometric measurements and body weight, we did not find any statistical differences between the breeds (p > 0.05). The scrotal circumference presented the lowest association with body weight (p < 0.05). However, all biometric measurements showed highly significant correlations with live body (p < 0.01). In conclusion, thoracic perimeter was the main measure of body weight predictor, considering efficiency and practical aspects.

Records from 120 day-old Arbor Acre (n = 60) and White Rose (n = 60) broiler strains of mixed sexes were used. The experiment was carried out at the Poultry Unit, Teaching and Research Farm of the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna state. Traits considered from day old to 8 weeks included body weight (BW), body length (BL) as well as chest girt (CG). The chickens were assigned to two treatments with three replications each having twenty chickens per replicate and were fed the same type of feed. The weights were taken on weekly basis. The feed consumed was also measured on daily basis. The body parameter such as body length and chest girth was also taken on weekly basis. The chick's body volume (BV) was estimated by cylinder volume using a formula derived from the work of Paputungan. Results obtained showed that age significantly (P<0.05) affected BW at all ages where the White Rose strain consistently weigh heavier than Arbor Acre. Similarly the BV of Arbor Acre is less than that of White Rose strain only at week 2. No significant difference (P>0.05) was obtained for the other parameters investigated across age. Coefficient of correlation among parameters obtained in this study were low and insignificant (P>0.05). However, all the values recorded were positive indicating that selection for any trait will lead to correlated response in the others. The multiple regression models for predicting live weight from chest girth, body length and body volume in the two strains revealed that coefficient of determination (R2 ) for BV was higher (0.96 to 0.98) compared with those of chest girth (0.56 to 0.73) and body length (0.81 to 0.88). It was concluded therefore that body volume was more efficient and better predictor of live body weight than BL and/or CG.

The effect of anabolic steroids on certain body parameters in ram lambs was investigated. Twenty Ile de France ram lambs were allocated at random to two groups after weaning (3 months). One group (n = 10) was treated weekly with an intramuscular injection of an anabolic steroid (50 mg nandrolone laurate)for a 12-week period. The second group (n = 10) served as a control. Parameters recorded weekly included scrotal circumference, scrotal volume, shoulder width, body length, shoulder height, body weight and serum testosterone concentration. Treatment with steroids did not significantly increase the mean shoulder width (22,8 vs 22,0 cm), shoulder height (61,7 vs. 60.8 cm), body length (72,8 vs. 70,2 cm) or body weight (42,5 vs. 39,8 kg). Scrotal circumference and volume were significantly (P <0,01) less in the treated group - a decrease of 24,5% and 51,2%. respectively.

The aim of this study was to set up direct and indirect casual effects between body weight and biometric measurements of breeding gilts at growing and finishing stages of production using path analysis. Body weights of 50 crossbred (Landrace x Large White) female pigs were measured along with four biometric traits (body length, heart girth, flank-to-flank, height-at-withers) on each animal during growing and finishing stages of production. A computed mean of 1150 measurements per biometric trait taken during the entire study was subjected to path coefficient analysis using the correlation matrix approach. High positive and significant correlations (>84.3%) were observed between different biometric measurements. However, path analysis of these traits on body weight of pigs revealed that heart girth is the major contributor to the body weight of the pig with a higher amount of direct effect of 0.6539 (R2 = 95.25). The direct effects of body length and flank-to-flank measurements on body weight of the pigs were less. These traits mostly affect body weight indirectly via heart girth. Finding of the present investigation demonstrated that heart girth was the most important contributor to body weight of grower and finisher pigs and thus was recommended for quick estimation of body weight of breeding gilts under field or market conditions than other biometric traits. In addition, it could also be used for the construction of selection index for breeding gilts at both phases of growth.

ABSTRACTThe body dimensions and live weight of 126 Mule (Bluefaced Leicester × Scottish Blackface) and Scottish Blackface ewes were measured during the 1986/87 housing season. Body dimensions included: head and neck length, body length, diagonal body length, height to withers, height to rump, girth at widest point, heart girth, width at widest point and width at shoulders. It was found that most body dimensions varied greatly with body weight. However, some body dimensions such as head length were found to be independent of weight within the weight range studied. Prediction equations are presented for each body dimensions for unshorn sheep.These predictions can be used as a basis for the design of sheep housing, for example, trough space allowances, design of feeders or as a biological basis for space allowance.

AbstractGoat production systems increasingly involve indoor feeding. To facilitate manger design, there is need for information on the ability to reach for food, such as that for cattle given food through tombstone barriers. In the first study, 20 castrated and 20 non-pregnant female Saanens of mean live weight (M) 39·3 (s.d. 14·42) kg were trained to reach, through a vertical tombstone barrier, for concentrate meal placed on a horizontal platform attached to the barrier. The barrier allowed the neck but not the shoulders to pass through. It was hypothesized that horizontal reach forwards (F, distance from mid point of barrier to uneaten meal) and sideways (S, distances sideways from mid point of barrier to uneaten meal adjacent to barrier) would be a function of height of platform above the floor and size of goat. Because of size, eight goats (mean M, 16·4 kg) were unable to reach meal when the platform height was 75 cm. Mean (s.e.) values for F at platform heights 0, 25, 50 and 75 cm were 55·9 (0·68), 58·8 (0·64), 57·8 (0·69) and 41·1 (1·23) cm respectively. Values for S were smaller, but followed a similar pattern (49·4 (0·64), 52·4 (0·56), 53·2 (0·53), 36·6 (1·17) cm). Linear regression of either F or S on M and linear body dimensions (e.g. body length, neck and head length, neck-joint height, withers height) showed high correlations with R2 values being 0·8 or more. In the second study, 10 castrated and 10 non-pregnant females (M, 48·7 (s.d. 14·56) kg) were trained to reach through the tombstone barrier for concentrate pellets 'glued', using molasses, on to a vertical plate. It was hypothesized that vertical reach (V, distance from floor to uneaten pellets) would be a function of distance between barrier and plate (20, 30, 40, 45, 50 cm), height of step (0,14·2, 28·4, 42·6 cm) on which goats placed their forelegs and size of goat. Four goats (mean M, 29·9 kg) were unable to reach pellets when the plate was at 45 and 50 cm. Mean (s.e.) V values decreased with increasing plate distance and increased with step height (e.g. at 0 cm step, 122·4 (1·96), 116·9 (2·05), 109·4 (2·16), 103·9 (2·49) and 96·5 (2·75) at 20-; 30-; 40-; 45- and 50-cm plate distances respectively; at 20-cm plate distance, 122·4 (1·96), 137·5 (2·00), 151·3 (1·90) and 164·3 (2·00) cm at 0-; 14·2-; 28·4-and 42·6-cm step heights respectively). Linear regression of V on body weight and body dimensions (e.g. body length, heart girth, withers height) showed high correlations (R2 > 0·8). It is concluded that for practical purposes, body weight is a satisfactory predictor of reach. The results support the hypotheses. The data will facilitate the design of mangers for goats with body weights and dimensions in the range of those used in the present study.

Direct and indirect effects of some explanatory variables ((body length (BL), rump height (RH), rump length (RL) , rump width (RW) , shoulder width (SW), wither height (WH), heart girth (HG) and flank length (FL)) influence on live weight at birth and at weaning in Nigerian indigenous pigs, managed under semi intensive system were investigated using path analysis. Results of the analysis indicated that the correlation coefficient between body weight and body length at birth was highest (0.59) while at weaning, rump width had the highest correlation coefficient with body weight (0.60). The relationships were from low to high. The direct effect of linear traits to body weight at birth were highest with wither height and flank length similarly heart girth and rump length had better direct effect on body weight at weaning than other linear traits. The findings show that there is variability in relationship between body weight and linear traits with age, similarly both tissues and bone development play significant role in weight determination in the indigenous pigs. Thus selection for weight increase at adult phase can better be achieved at weaning, providing direction for selection towards increase weight in indigenous pigs.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of biometric properties of Bafra sheep and lambs such as chest depth, chest width, chest circumference, rump height, height at withers, body length and body weight. Relationships were determined by Pearson correlation coefficient and Path analysis. As a result, it has been shown that biometric properties of Bafra sheep and lambs provide different results on live weight estimation. In addition, the relationships between biometric properties were not similar (r = -0.16).

Characterization of Black Bengal bucks and does was performed in this study. A total of 50 goats of different aged were studied. The experiment was performed in Black Bengal bucks and does at 1<sup>st</sup> day and at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age for measuring different parameters such as body length, heart girth, wither height, hip height, fore and hind leg length, head length and width, head length and width, ear length and ear breath, scrotal length and scrotal circumference. In a single parameter as body weight of Black Bengal bucks and does at 1<sup>st</sup> day and at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age were found to be 1.08±0.06, 5.22±0.33, 8.95±0.34, 12.05±0.47 and 14.20±0.20; and 1.01±0.23, 3.93±0.19, 7.41±0.27, 9.53±0.38 and 12.40±0.41 kg respectively. Whereas all the finding where gradually increased for all parameters according to their specific age periods. Body weight has a strong positive relationship with heart girth, body length, height at wither, scrotal length and scrotal circumference in Black Bengal goat. All the parameters studied found comparatively higher in bucks than does. Morphometric characterization of Katjang goat in Malaysia is important for conservation and for further genetic improvement. With this idea in view the present study was carried out to characterize the morphometry and to estimate the relationship among the important morphometric traits of indigenous Katjang goat. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture (FSA), surrounding area of FSA Sandakan, Sabah and Batu Pahat, Johor in Malaysia. Characteristics of body weight (BW), body length (BL), heart girth (HG), wither height (WH), hip height (HH), fore leg length (FLL), hind leg length (HLL), head length (HeL), head width (HW), ear length(EL), ear breadth (EB), tail length (TL), scrotal length (SL) and scrotal circumference (SC) were gathered. In a single parameter as body weight of Katjang bucks at below 1 year, 1-2 year and > 2 years ages were recorded to be 7.41 ± 0.27, 14.20±0.20 and25.83 ± 0.99 kg, respectively. On the hand, body weight of Katjang does at 1-2 year and > 2 years ages were observed to be 12.41 ± 0.41 and 23.65±0.87 kg, respectively. In both sexes, head length, head width, tail length, ear length, ear breath, body weight, body length, hearth girth, wither height, leg length, hip height increases with the increment of the age of goat. On the other hand, all the parameters contemplated found comparatively higher in bucks than that of does.  Strong positive correlation was observed between scrotal length and scrotal circumference in Katjang bucks.Bang.
