The current stage of civilization is distinguished by an increase of the number of elderly people, which results in the conduction of researches on the subject. Investigations about physical activity also rise, especially focusing on an epidemiological perspective. In this scenario, new studies bring alternatives to this hegemonic view, such as humanized physical activity. The present study has aimed to analyze the meanings of the practice for physically active elderly living in Fortaleza-Ce. Considering the scientific research method, a qualitative matrix has been the choice. Eighteen elderly men and women participated in the research, 12 females and six males, with a mean age of 69.8±6,92 years. The investigation was carried out in an association and in a private university, which have physical activity projects with the investigated public. For the data collection, in-depth interviews have been conducted, analyzed by the IRaMuTeQ software. As of the results, socialization, biological benefits, the daily move, the reduction of illnesses and a healthy life were the meanings the elderly have reported relating to the habit of physical activity. Therefore, it’s possible to infer that the speeches of those elderly have been run through by aspects of the epidemiologic perspective, keeping limited connections with the subjective point of view.

In the sport, physical activity, and aging literature, much attention has been given to the importance of physical activity and sport involvement for the elderly. Most of the literature, however, has focused on the continuity of physical activity among older adults. The purpose of this study was to extend the understanding of older sport participants by conducting a case study of Max Springer, a male, White master runner (88 years old). We assumed that continuity in sport would represent a primary adaptive strategy for coping with the aging process. In addition to two in-depth interviews with Max, the authors interviewed various other “participants” regarding their perceptions of Max as an older runner. From deductive analysis of the interview material, the following themes emerged as figural to Max’s experience as an older runner: tradition of always being physically active, I’m not an athlete, being of senior age, meaning and philosophy of running, and significance of social support.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the association between contextual income and the incidence of disability in basic and instrumental activities of daily living. METHODS: This is a cohort study, with sample of elderly individuals (n = 1,196) residing in Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The incidence of disabilities was evaluated using reports of difficulty or inability to perform six basic activities of daily living and nine instrumental activities of daily living after four years. Contextual income was obtained from the 2010 Census. We conducted multilevel logistic regression analyses with adjustment models for individual variables. RESULTS: The incidence of disability in basic activities of daily living was 15.8% (95%CI 13.8–17.9) and in instrumental activities of daily living incidence was 13.4% (95%CI 11.6–15.5). We observed significant association between contextual income and incidence of disability in basic activities of daily living. Having as reference the elderly living in the lower income tercile, those who lived in the intermediary terciles and in that of highest income had 37% (95%CI 0.41–0.96) and 21% (95%CI 0.52–1.19) lower chances of developing disability, respectively. For the incidence of disability in instrumental activities of daily living we observed no statistically significant associations. CONCLUSIONS: Contextual income influences the development of disability in basic activities of daily living in the elderly and should be the subject of actions to reduce socioeconomic inequalities and promote longevity with independence.

We have developed a telemonitoring system to follow the activities of elderly daycare-recipients who live alone. After conducting a questionnaire on electrical appliances the elderly use daily as an index of activity, we chose television (TV) for monitoring. We then developed a telemonitoring system of TV use. A feasibility study conducted at the home of an 80-years-old female living alone demonstrated (1) the consistency of daily TV use rhythm and (2) different TV use patterns depending on the day of the week. The accumulation TV time in a day correlated inversely with activity evaluated from a pedometer output by the subject. TV use thus reflects daily activities of the elderly living alone and helps alert caretakers to possible problems those living alone may face.

Introduction: Physical activity and sedentary behavior are emerging issues in public health, especially in developing countries. Objective: To verify transition and factors related to physical activity combined with sedentary behavior among the elderly followed for 24 months.Materials and methods: We conducted a longitudinal observational study with people aged 60 years or over living in the urban area of Uberaba, Brazil. We collected the data from sociodemographic, health, and physical tests in 2014 and 2016 using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Katz Index, the Lawton and Brody Scale, the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). For the combined evaluation we considered a cutoff point of 150 minutes of physical activity per week and the percentile 75 (420 minutes/day) for sedentary behavior constituting the groups: Unsatisfactory (insufficient sum of physical activity and sedentary behavior), intermediate (loss of only one of the two components) and satisfactory (sufficient sum of physical activity and sedentary behavior). The statistical descriptive and inferential analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences™, version 21.0, considering p<0.05.Results: Of the 374 elderly, 61 (16.3%) improved their physical activity and sedentary behavior condition, 226 (60.4%) remained in the same category and 87 (23.3%) got worse. Unsatisfactory levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior were related to the eldest group (p=0.031), the absence of professional activity (p<0.001), the dependence for instrumental activities of daily living (p=0.013), and a worse physical performance (p<0.001).Conclusion: Our results showed a relationship between sociodemographic and health factors with physical activity and sedentary behavior, reiterating the need for further research on the subject.

Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Italian government has adopted containment measures to control the virus’s spread, including limitations to the practice of physical activity (PA). The aim of this study was to estimate the levels of PA, expressed as energy expenditure (MET–minute/week), among the physically active Sicilian population before and during the last seven days of the COVID-19 quarantine. Furthermore, the relation between this parameter and specific demographic and anthropometric variables was analyzed. Methods: 802 Sicilian physically active participants (mean age: 32.27 ± 12.81 years; BMI: 23.44 ± 3.33 kg/m2) were included in the study and grouped based on gender, age and BMI. An adapted version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire—short form (IPAQ-SF) was administered to the participants through an online survey. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Kruskal-Wallis rank-sum test were used for statistical analyses. Results: As expected, we observed a significant decrease of the total weekly energy expenditure during the COVID-19 quarantine (p < 0.001). A significant variation in the MET–min/wk in the before quarantine condition (p = 0.046) and in the difference between before and during quarantine (p = 0.009) was found for males and females. The male group decreased the PA level more than the female one. Moreover, a significant difference in the MET–min/wk was found among groups distributions of BMI (p < 0.001, during quarantine) and of age (p < 0.001, both before and during quarantine). In particular, the highest and the lowest levels of PA were reported by the young and the elderly, respectively, both before and during quarantine. Finally, the overweight group showed the lowest level of PA during quarantine. Conclusion: Based on our outcomes, we can determine that the current quarantine has negatively affected the practice of PA, with greater impacts among males and overweight subjects. In regards to different age groups, the young, young adults and adults were more affected than senior adults and the elderly.

Physically active older adults have reduced risk of functional restrictions and role limitations. Several aspects may interrelate and influence habitual physical activity (PA). However, older adults’ own perspectives towards their PA need to be addressed. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of habitual physical activity in maintaining roles and functioning among older adult Palestinians ≥60 years. Data were collected through in-depth interviews based on a narrative approach. Seventeen participants were recruited (aged 64–84 years). Data were analyzed using a narrative interpretative method.Findings. Three central narratives were identified,“keep moving, stay healthy,”“social connectedness, a motive to stay active,”and “adapting strategies to age-related changes.” Conclusion. Habitual physical activity was perceived as an important factor to maintain functioning and to preserve active roles in older adults. Walking was the most prominent pattern of physical activity and it was viewed as a vital tool to maintain functioning among the older adults. Social connectedness was considered as a contributing factor to the status of staying active. To adapt the process of age-related changes in a context to stay active, the participants have used different adapting strategies, including protective strategy, awareness of own capabilities, and modifying or adopting new roles.

Despite growing indications of increased participation in healthful physical activity among the elderly, aging women tend to participate in exercise and sport to a lesser extent than their male peers. This paper suggests that strongly held beliefs about the potential risks of vigorous exercise deter many elderly women from being physically active. It then examines the gendered nature of myths and stereotypes concerning aging and physical activity and explores those social and cultural factors that have historically persuaded aging women to practice "being" old and inactive before "becoming" old. The purpose is to elaborate upon studies in the history of aging which indicate that popular perceptions rather than reality shaped social expectations, professional prescriptions, and public policy. These studies suggest how the creation of negative stereotypes around the aging female paved the way for an unbalanced version of the realities of female old age, at times delimiting aspirations and constraining opportunities for vigorous and healthful physical activity.

Abstract: The study aimed to investigate the association between changes in social relations and physical activity on the quality of life of the elderly in the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina state, Brazil. Data on 1,197 elderly from two waves of the population and household survey, EpiFloripa Idoso, were analyzed. Multiple linear regression was performed to estimate association of social change variables and lifestyle on quality of life score (QoL; measured by CASP-16 Brazil, score can range from 0, which represents no QoL to 48, total satisfaction in all domains of CASP). The average QoL score in the sample was 37.6 (95%CI: 37.2; 38.1). The social relations that were associated with positive QoL score were to start to work, to continue to use the Internet, to start participating in religious or lifestyle groups, to remain and to become physically active, and for those who were physically active, but became inactive in the second wave. To remain living with family had a negative effect on QoL score for the elderly. Some changes in social relations had a positive effect on QoL, and results reaffirmed the importance of physical activity to healthy aging, since to pursue it in some of the waves was better than to remain inactive.
