Two key technological issues i.e. significant energy consumption factors identification and baseline model development, energy savings uncertainty analysis are analyzed based on international performance measurement & verification protocol (IPMVP) and national standard GB/T 28750. Besides, two theoretical solutions are proposed correspondingly. Finally, energy savings calculation on an energy-saving retrofit project of a building heating system verifies the validity of the theoretical solutions proposed.

How to reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning, to use new energy such as solar appropriately, and to achieve energy savings, are the problems must be treated in HVAC industry. Because of the high energy consumption of traditional air-conditioning and the need for reduction of emission, an air conditioning system (utilizing solar dehumidifying applied to heating/cooling radiant floor) is designed and installed in this paper. At the same time, as an example, the energy saving potential of system is analyzed. This type of heating/cooling radiant floor system is worth promoted if solve the dehumidification properly. By separating to deal with heat and moisture can reduce the energy-cost of traditional air-conditioning, and to achieve purposes of primary energy saving.

One essential utilization of phase change materials as energy storage materials is energy saving and temperature control in air conditioning and indirect solar air drying systems. This study presents an experimental investigation evaluating the characteristics and energy savings of multiple phase change materials subjected to internal flow in an air heating system during charging and discharging cycles. The experimental tests were conducted using a test rig consisting of two main parts, an air supply duct and a room model equipped with phase change materials (PCMs) placed in rectangular aluminum panels. Analysis of the results was based on three test cases: PCM1 (Paraffin wax) placed in the air duct was used alone in the first case; PCM2 (RT–42) placed in the room model was used alone in the second case; and in the third case, the two PCMs (PCM1 and PCM2) were used at the same time. The results revealed a significant improvement in the energy savings and room model temperature control for the air heating system incorporated with multiple PCMs compared with that of a single PCM. Complete melting during the charging cycle occurred at temperatures in the range of 57–60 °C for PCM1 and 38–43 °C for PCM2, respectively, thereby validating the reported PCMs’ melting–solidification results. Multiple PCMs maintained the room air temperature at the desired range of 35–45.2 °C in the air heating applications by minimizing the air temperature fluctuations. The augmentation in discharging time and improvement in the room model temperature using multiple PCMs were about 28.4% higher than those without the use of PCMs. The total energy saving using two PCMs was higher by about 29.5% and 46.7% compared with the use of PCM1 and PCM2, respectively. It can be concluded that multiple PCMs have revealed higher energy savings and thermal stability for the air heating system considered in the current study.

Due to the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels and the climate change, the importance of energy efficiency is increasing. This importance is major especially in areas where the energy consumption is high. Rail transport depicts such an area. The highest proportion of energy consumed in the railway is the so called traction energy. This energy is required for the train run. In the timetable, allowances leave a margin for the driving style of train run. By the selective use of strategies that change the driving style, it is possible to exploit these allowances and reduce the traction energy consumption. The first objective of this study deals with the development of algorithms for energy-saving driving style. First, the necessary input variables of the algorithms based on the literature research and the formulas of train dynamics were determined. Then the algorithms were developed to create different energy-saving driving styles, resulting choose the best result which should be shown as a driving recommendation. The developed algorithms were used in an application example in order to calculate the potential of energy-savings. The example should represent the influence of the input variables for a comparison of different situations. At last the acceptance of the determined driving strategies in practice was investigated. By implementing the design thinking method it was identified that driver advisory systems and training programs are necessary to facilitate energy-saving driving in practice.

As sleep is unconscious, the traditional definition of thermal comfort with conscious judgment does not apply. In this thesis sleep thermal comfort is defined as the thermal condition which enables sleep to most efficiently rejuvenate the body and mind. A comfort model was developed to stimulate the respective thermal environment required to achieve the desired body thermal conditions and a new infrared sphere method was developed to measure mean radiant temperature. Existing heating conditions according to building code conditions during sleeping hours was calculated to likely overheat a sleeping person and allowed energy saving potential by reducing nighttime heating set points. Experimenting with existing radiantly and forced air heated residential buildings, it was confirmed that thermal environment was too hot for comfortable sleep and that the infrared sphere method shows promise. With the site data, potential energy savings were calculated and around 10% of energy consumption reduction may be achieved during peak heating.


The main objective of this study is to conduct an Energy Auditing of The University of Jordan Hospital. This hospital is quite known, as one of Jordan’s leading hospitals in human resources and equipment; however, the energy consumption of the hospital over the past few years has proven to be highly expensive. This makes the saving on costs of energy consumption a high priority that cannot be ignored. Energy audit covers the three main sections of the hospital: the Emergency Building, the Clinics Building and the Main Hospital Building. The consumption of energy, which costs the hospital a total of 2,778,426 JD/yr., can be categorized into three main parts, the lighting system, the diesel fuel consumption, and the consumption of water. After analyzing the energy invoices, and visiting the site for inspection, a list of recommended solutions that are applicable to cut down the total energy bill were derived. The implementation of renewable energy was suggested and studied of which a solar water heating system was proposed. A study on photovoltaic cells technology was performed for a sample of guest's rooms, the number of panels needed was found. After that, a feasibility study was conducted. The initial costs, annual savings and payback periods of the suggested system were estimated by the current market prices. It is found that the energy auditing and the solutions would be very beneficial as it will save a total annual value of 346,853 JDs (12.5% of the current energy bill).

The aim of this research is to estimate the influence of compressed air volumetric capacity on the energy consumption in systems equipped with oil-lubricated screw compressors. A mathematical model of oil-lubricated screw compressors has been proposed. The model is verified by comparing with real measurements, and overall uncertainty analysis is estimated. An in-house developed numerical code (c++) is used to calculate the energy consumption in 252,000 combinations. The final result can be used to estimate the energy efficiency of existing air systems and to assess potential energy savings due to changes in the operation of the system and its control strategy.

Various ongoing studies regard light-shelves as one solution to the recent increase in lighting energy consumption. However, in previous light-shelf systems, the direction of incoming light was determined by external conditions, thereby limiting the efficiency of lighting energy saving. The purpose of the present study was to develop a movable light-shelf system with location-awareness technology and verify its performance. In this study, a full-scale testbed was established in order to test the proposed movable light-shelf system with location awareness as well as to verify its energy saving potential. The results were analysed and compared with the performances of previous fixed (Case 1) and movable (Case 2) light-shelf systems without location-awareness technology. The obtained results were as follows. (1) The proposed light-shelf system can respond to external conditions and to the location of the occupant by means of the control axis of the light-shelf module angle through modulation between the control axis of the angle of the previous light-shelf and the reflector of the light-shelf. (2) The proposed light-shelf system provides 90.0% and 86.6%/91.0% energy savings in comparison to Case 1 and Case 2, respectively.

In this paper, the software of DeST was used to simulate the heating energy consumption by the year of a typical energy-saving residential building in the city of Changchun. Comparing the energy consumption of the top and bottom,the middle room and the edges rooms ,we get the reasons for the uneven heating and put forward the corresponding solutions, which provide the reference for heating system design.

In this paper, the operation mechanism of combined air-conditioning system with temperature and humidity decoupled treatment (CACSTHDT) was presented, and the energy saving potential and economics of CACSTHDT were primarily analyzed through compared with a traditional air-conditioning system. The results indicated that CACSTHDT could save up to 28.64% energy consumption in comparison with a traditional air-conditioning system. The operating cost in one summer only was 71.36% of that cost of traditional air-conditioning system.

In recent years, the industry's responsibility to join in sustainable manufacturing becomes huge, while innovating sustainability has been a new trend. Industrial enterprises are pursuing energy reduction to meet future needs for sustainable globalization and government legislations for green manufacturing. To run a manufacturing line in an energy-efficient manner, an energy-oriented maintenance methodology is developed. At the machine layer, the multi-attribute model (MAM) method is extended by modeling the energy attribute. Preventive maintenance (PM) intervals of each machine are dynamically scheduled according to the machine deterioration, maintenance effects, and environmental conditions. At the system layer, a novel energy saving window (ESW) policy is proposed to reduce energy for the whole line. Energy consumption interactivities, batch production characteristics, and system-layer maintenance opportunities are comprehensively considered. Real-time choice of PM adjustments is scheduled by comparing the energy savings of advanced PM and delayed PM. The results prove the energy reduction achieved by this MAM-ESW methodology. It effectively utilizes standby power, reduces energy consumption, avoids manufacturing breakdown, and decreases scheduling complexity. Furthermore, this energy-oriented maintenance framework can be applied not only in the automotive industry but also for a broader range of manufacturing domains such as the aerospace, semiconductor, and chemical industries.
