Cu-based powder metallurgy friction materials were prepared by varying of Fe and C (% weight) in the friction components. The samples were compacted under the load of 24 metric tonnes and sintered at a temperature of 950 °C for 45 minutes. The friction and wear characteristics the materials developed were studied using Chase machine. The results show that Fe and C have different friction and wear characteristics. The friction coefficient of Cu-30%Fe-15%C sample maintained to be high and slightly increased after the drum temperature of 350°C and subsequently stable throughout tests. The friction of Cu-20%Fe-10%C stable until the drum temperature of 450°C and then its start to decay slightly until the end of the test. On the hand, the friction of Cu-10%Fe-5%C start to decay after sliding a few minutes at the drum temperature of 230°C. Thus, it could be postulated that the friction coefficient increased with increasing weight percentage of Fe and C in the friction components. However, the volume loss shows that there is no direct correlation with the Fe and C content. The volume loss of Cu-10%Fe-5%C was higher than the two samples which had the lowest hardness. On the hand, the volume loss of the Cu-30%Fe-15%C was slightly higher than Cu20%Fe-10%C as result of higher porosity and lower hardness. Wear mechanisms of abrasion, adhesion and thermal were observed to be operated during sliding process.

The friction and wear characteristics of stainless steel diffused with Si-based ceramics were investigated using pin-and-disc configuration under reciprocation motion, rotational motion, and simultaneous motion. The pin material was diffused by the combination of 60% Ti2O3, 30% Al2O3, and 10% Si2O3. Experiments have been carried out both in diffused and non-diffused conditions. Both the friction coefficient and wear rate have been possible to reduce by diffused pin material. The effects of both friction coefficient and wear rate have been studied on ceramics composites at different pin-and-disc motions. Experiments were conducted underpin motions of 0.15–0.25 m/s, disc motions of 0.5–0.6 m/s, and normal loads of 2.5–3.5 N. A relation was found among friction, wear and surface hardness of the composite. The friction coefficient and wear resistance were improved of stainless steel diffused with ceramics. Scanning electron microscopic analysis was performed to observe the morphology of ceramic and pin material.

The scuffing of friction pair is a common phenomenon in conditions of high speed and pressure. It was researched on scuffing characteristics in this paper. By using UMT-3 friction and wear tester, the friction and wear characteristics of slipper pair material in hydraulic component were investigated, and the friction coeficient-speed curves in the different pressures were got, as well as the wear rate-speed curves. The worn surface morphology of pin specimen was photographed by SEM, and the formation mechanism of the worn surface was analyzed. The results suggested that: friction coefficient and wear rate would have a jump when the scuffing occurred, the friction and wear characteristics would be affected by the interaction of pressure (P) and speed (V) . The PV characteristic restricted the correlation between working pressure and speed.

Cu-based friction materials were prepared by powder metallurgy technology. The effect of Fe content on friction and wear properties of Cu-based friction materials has been investigated. The results indicate that Fe content has great effects on the wear ability of Cu-based friction materials. Fe works as frictional component in copper-based friction materials, influening the mechanical and frictional property of materials. With increasing Fe content, the hardness and friction coefficient of Cu-based friction materials stability increase, the wear rate of the friction materials decreases. When Fe content is 6%, the materials posses stably high friction factors, as well as good wear ability.

Copper-based friction material (CFM) and paper-based friction material (PFM) are the two most commonly used clutch friction materials. The friction and wear characteristics of these two kinds of friction materials under dry conditions were investigated by the pin-on-disc test over a broad range of applied loads, rotating speeds and ambient temperatures. Before experiments, the running-in test was conducted to stabilize the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear amount of the test samples. After experiments, the metallographic micrographs of the tested samples were presented to investigate the wear mechanisms. Experimental results showed that both the COF and wear depth of the CFM are much greater than these of PFM. The COF of CFM decreases with the increase of applied load, and changes slightly with the variation of rotating speed, whereas it increases first and then decreases with the increase of ambient temperature. However, the COF of PFM decreases dramatically with the increase of the rotating speed and ambient temperature, while it remains stable at first and then decreases slowly as the applied load increases. Additionally, under such three working conditions, the wear depth of CFM changes linearly, while the wear depth of PFM varies greatly. This study can be used as a guide for selecting friction materials for clutches with different applications.

The surface texture, a major way to decrease friction and wear of the cylinder-piston ring friction pair, was conducted on cylinder-piston ring friction pair specimen using the orthogonal experimental design method to investigate the effect of different texture parameters (size, depth, shape, and surface density) of the friction and wear characteristics. Through simulation analysis, the texture parameters that affect the friction and wear characteristics are obtained. Using the evaluation method of friction coefficient and mass wear rate, the influence sequence and optimal values of texture parameters that affect friction and wear characteristics are obtained through range analysis. The results show that, after surface texture treatment under mixed lubrication conditions, the friction characteristics of the friction pair have changed and the friction coefficient and friction and wear rate have been significantly reduced. The results show that the triangular texture has a good antifriction effect, the texture depth is deepened, and the surface density and the size increases have a positive effect on the improvement of friction and wear. An ultra-depth microscope was used to observe the wear morphology of the friction and wear tests. The results show that the weakening of the third body wear by the texturing treatment and the maintenance of oil lubrication are the main reasons for reducing friction and wear.
