This paper presents the finite element structural sensitivity analysis of a cable guyed monotower known as the Tarpon Monopod when subjected to extreme environments in Malaysian waters. A hydrodynamic loading and static platform response analysis is performed in SACS v5.3 to gauge the structural robustness in extreme Malaysian metocean conditions. A Stokes Fifth Order Wave Theory was employed to obtain wave kinematics and dynamics for load computation. The Tarpon Monopod design is reviewed generically. An actual platform located in 60m water depth within Malaysian waters is modelled for analysis. Four different guying cable scenarios are considered which are the fully guyed condition (three guy cables pinned), two guy cables condition (one wire loss), one guy cable condition (two wire loss) and free standing condition (total loss of guy wires) are presented. The environmental load sets are simulated at different headings using 45 degree steps. The results suggest that the structural caisson contributes little to the lateral stiffness of the platform. The Tarpon Monopod has little structural redundancy and its integrity is highly dependent on guy wire condition and environmental load headings.

Establish the finite element model for high precision grinding machine which takes joint surface into consideration and then carrys out the static and dynamic analysis of the grinder. After the static analysis, modal analysis and harmonic response analysis, the displacement deformation, stress, natural frequency and vibration mode could be found, which also helps find the weak links out. The improvement scheme which aims to increase the stiffness and precision of the whole machine has proposed to efficiently optimize the grinder. And the first natural frequency of the optimized grinder has increased by 68.19%.

Abstract A finite element formulation to solve the dynamic behavior of high-speed Shinkansen cars, rail, and bridge is given. A mechanical model to express the interaction between wheel and rail is described, in which the impact of the rail on the flange of wheel is also considered. The bridge is modeled by using various finite elements such as shell, beam, solid, spring, and mass. The equations of motions of bridge and Shinkansen cars are solved under the constitutive and constraint equations to express the interaction between rail and wheel. Numerical method based on a modal transformation to get the dynamic response effectively is discussed. A finite element program for the dynamic response analysis of Shinkansen cars, rail, and bridge at the high-speed running has been developed. Numerical examples are also demonstrated.

Mechanistic pavement analysis and design based on either layered elastic analysis (LEA) or the finite element method (FEM) is increasingly being used to replace the empirical design process. The simplifying assumptions of a uniform, homogeneous layer of linear material used in LEA can render its analysis inaccurate for real pavement structures. The FEM is more attractive for structural analysis of pavements; the generality of the FEM also allows both the use of comprehensive material models and modeling of the spatial variability that exists in pavement systems. To date, spatial variability and uncertainty are ignored in pavement system finite element analyses. Ignoring spatial variability and uncertainty implies a false sense of accuracy in the results and can lead to inaccurate assessment of the pavement. The first application of the probabilistic finite element method to pavement response analysis and life prediction and the first investigation of the effects of spatial variability on pavement life prediction are presented. It is concluded that the probabilistic FEA, with spatial variability, is a more accurate representation of the true physical condition and leads to results that are less conservative than those obtained with probabilistic LEA.

The modal analysis and harmonic response analysis of the machine tool table with periodic truss-core structures are analyzed and calculated by finite element analysis software-ANSYS Workbench, then we get the finite element analysis results. After comparing the results with finite element analysis results of the original machine tool table, we come to the conclusion that the dynamic properties of the machine tool table with periodic truss-core structures are better than the original machine tool table’s. It makes a base for optimized design and remanufacturing.

Impact loads may cause serious or even fatal damage to the structure (component), in most existing specifications in China, and there are no special terms that take impact load into consideration. So, the response analysis of the structure (component) under impact loads is very important. In this paper, the sensitivity analysis was conducted for the 22 parameters of the Holmquist–Johnson concrete (HJC) constitutive model of concrete, and the sensitive parameters of the HJC model are identified with A, B, G, Pl, μl, and fc respectively. LS-DYNA nonlinear transient finite element analysis code was used for this paper. Based on the validation of finite element modeling and choosing midspan deflection of RC beams and impact loads as response indices, some influencing factors on RC beams under falling weight impact were investigated, such as the mass and speed of falling weight, impact position, the strength of concrete and rebar, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and the span of the beam.

Railways are very efficient mode of transportation. Speed limits of the railways and loads they carry are increasing rapidly. Due to some advantages, the insulated rail joints are still the part of a rail-track system. However, a high rate of failure of joints puts the railway track at risk. Therefore, a detailed study of these joints is required. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element model of rail-fishplate joint is created using Abaqus - a finite element method-based software. Stresses in fishplate and bolts due to wheel impact are analysed by coupling implicit and explicit methods. It is found that bolts are a critical part of a joint due to stresses and vibrations to which they are subjected. The large number of stresses and vibration can result into loosening of bolts.

Aiming at the design feature and the operating of K-type derrick, an effective method used to stress real-time monitoring consider environmental loading is proposed. The challenge to the South China Sea offshore drilling derrick is a illustration. The derrick corrosion and wall thinning conditions is be considered, then using finite element software analyze derrick structure of static analysis, get the higher force about main member of derrick. Based on finite element analysis, select the key parts layout of measuring points, then monitor derrick stress under nine storms environmental loading and extreme work condition. The measured data results show that: the nine storms environmental load affect capacity of drilling significantly, the different parts of the main member stress have the different degrees of influence by environmental load, the maximum can reach 50.8%. This real-time monitoring method of stress, can protect the safety of marine operations, has a certain value of engineering application.

According to the flexural and torsional characteristics of curved thin-walled box girder with the effect of initial curvature, 7 basic displacements of curved box girder are determined. And then the strain-displacement calculation correlations were established. Under the curvilinear coordinate system, a three-noded curved girder finite element which has 7 degrees of freedom per node for the vibration characteristic and dynamic response analysis of curved box girder is constructed. The shape functions are used as the interpolation functions of variable curvature and variable height to accommodate to the variation of curvature and section height. A MATLAB numerical analysis program has been implemented.

Based on the requirements of that the finger can move in parallel, and the displacement of the finger can be detected, the micro-gripper driven by piezoelectric actuator is designed based on the displacement amplification structure with the flexure hinge. The static analysis, the modal analysis, the harmonic response analysis and the transient response analysis of the micro-gripper are carried out by using the finite element analysis software ANSYS. The results of the finite element analysis show that the finger is fully able to move in parallel, and can detect the displacement of the finger; the maximum displacement of the finger is about 101 μm, the first natural frequency is about 130 Hz; the finger tip displacement under the 1 μm step input is about 20 μm, the fingertip vibration is about ±2 μm.

Free and constraint modal finite element analysis were conducted on S385 diesel engine block using FEA according to its structural characteristics. The natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes of the first fifteen steps of each condition of the block were worked out using Lanczos method. By the analysis of vibration modes, the weak spots of the block were found and corresponding improved schemes were brought forward. The analysis results supplied a theoretical support to improve the structural design and the dynamic response analysis of the block.
