The effect of phthalic anhydride (PAH) as a coupling agent on the tensile properties, swelling behavior, and x-ray diffraction of recycled high density polyethylene/wood fiber (rHDPE/WF) composites were studied. rHDPE/WF and rHDPE/WFPAH composites were prepared using Brabender plasticorder at temperature of 160°C with rotor speed of 50 rpm. The results indicate that rHDPE/WFPAH composites showed higher tensile strength and percentages of equilibrium water absorption, but lower interparticle spacing (d) compared to rHDPE/WF composites.

The effect of phthalic anhydride as a coupling agent on the tensile properties and thermal stability of recycled high density polyethylene/wood fiber (rHDPE/WF) composites were studied.  Both composites rHDPE/WF and rHDPE/WF/PAH (modified with phthalic anhydride) were prepared using Brabender Plasticorder at a temperature of 160°C and rotor speed of 50 rpm. The result indicated that rHDPE/WF/PAH composites exhibit higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity than rHDPE/WF composites. It was also found that the addition of phthalic anhydride offers better thermal stability in rHDPE/WF/PAH composites than that of rHDPE/WF composites.

The effect of maleic anhydride as a coupling agent on the tensile properties and morphology of recycled high density polyethylene/wood fiber (rHDPE/WF) composites were studied. rHDPE/WF composites with different wood fiber loading and the addition of maleic anhydride were prepared with Brabender Plasticorder at temperature of 160°C and rotor speed of 50 rpm. The result indicated that rHDPE/WFM composites with maleic anhydride exhibit higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity than rHDPE/WF composites. rHDPE/WFM with maleic anhydride composites gave a better interfacial adhesion between the matrix and the fiber than rHDPE/WF composites as evidence using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

The effect of salicylic acid as a coupling agent on the tensile properties, and morphology analysis of recycled high density polyethylene/wood fiber (rHDPE/WF) composites were studied. Both composites rHDPE/WF and rHDPE/WFM (treatment with salicylic acid) were prepared using Brabender Plasticorder at temperature of 160°C and rotor speed of 50 rpm. The result indicated that rHDPE/WFM composites with salicylic acid exhibit higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity but lower elongation at break than rHDPE/WF composites. The SEM micrographs showed that the wood fiber was more widely dispersed in the rHDPE matrix with addition of ethyl salicylate than rHDPE/WFM.

Effect of filler loading on tensile properties, swelling behavior, and XRD characteristic of R-HDPE/tyre dust (TD) composites and R-HDPE/chicken feather fibers (CFF) composites were studied. The both composites were prepared with Brabender Plasticorder at 160°C and rotor speed of 50 rpm. The R-HDPE/TD composites gave a greater value of tensile strength, and swelling behavior resistance compared to R-HDPE/CFF composites. X-ray diffraction analysis shows the R-HDPE/TD composites have lower value of interparticle spacing (d) than R-HDPE/CFF composites. This indicated better interaction between tyre dust and R-HDPE matrix. Keywords: Chicken feather fiber, recycled high density polyethylene, tyre dust

The effect of polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride as a compatibilizer on the tensile properties, and swelling behavior of recycled high density polyethylene/ethylene vinyl acetate/ waste tyre dust (r-HDPE/EVA/WTD) composites was studied. r-HDPE/EVA/WTD composites with different tyre dust loading and the addition of polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride (PEgMAH) were prepared with Brabender Plasticorder at temperature of 160°C and rotor speed of 50 rpm. The result indicated that r-HDPE/EVA/WTD/PEgMAH composites exhibit higher tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and mass swell resistance than r-HDPE/EVA/WTD composites.

Carbon nanotubes have been used as reinforcements in polymers due to their high elasticity, flexibility, and thermal conductivity. In this study, pellets of high-density polyethylene +20 wt% carbon nanotube and polypropylene +20 wt% carbon nanotube were cured using microwave energy. X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, uniaxial tensile test, and scanning electron microscopy was used to study morphology, thermal stability, and mechanical performance of the microwave-cured composites. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the bonding between the polymer and carbon nanotube as the peaks shifted and intensified. From the thermal study, it was observed that melting point of the composites is affected by microwave curing and the crystallinity of high-density polyethylene/carbon nanotube and polypropylene/carbon nanotube changed by 57.67% and 47.28%, respectively. Results of the uniaxial tensile test indicated that Young’s modulus of microwave cured high-density polyethylene/carbon nanotube and polypropylene/carbon nanotube composites were improved by 295% and 787.8%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopic fractography shows the stretching of polymer over-lapped on carbon nanotubes in the direction of the applied load.

Effects of extrusion on mechanical properties and damping capacity of Mg-1.8wt.%Cu -0.5wt.%Mn (MCM1805) alloy have been investigated. Tensile tests and dynamic mechanical analyzer were respectively used to measure tensile properties and damping capacity at room temperature of as-cast and as-extruded MCM1805 alloy. The microstructure was studied using optical microscope, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Granato-Lücke model was used to explain the influences of extrusion on damping capacity of MCM1805 alloy. The results showed that extrusion dramatically decreases the grain size but has little influence on phase composition and solute atoms concentration of MCM1805 alloy, and the grain refinement was the dominant reason for the obvious increase of tensile properties and decrease of internal friction of MCM1805 alloy.

The effects of benzyl urea into RHDPE/NR/CFF composites with different fibers loading were studied. The composites were prepared using BrabenderPlasticorder at 160 °C with rotor speed of 50rpm. The composites were characterized in respect of their tensile properties and morphology. The results indicated that RHDPE/NR/CFF with benzyl urea composites show higher values of tensile strength, Youngs modulus, but lower elongation at break than RHDPE/NR/CFF composites. RHDPE/NR/CFF with benzyl urea composites gave a better interfacial adhesion between the matrix and the fiber than RHDPE/NR/CFF composites as evidence using SEM.

Organobentonite powder was synthesized and characterized using laser diffraction, X-ray diffraction, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption technique, and dynamic light scattering. Obtained powder was found as material with mesopores. The organobentonite particles were larger than pure bentonite one. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) was filled with organobentonite particles by mechanical dispersion, and produced composite films were researched by the number of methods. New data relating to structure, tensile properties, and antimicrobial activity of HEC/organobentonite composites were obtained. Using results of X-ray diffraction, the reflections assigned to crystal filler in polymer material were proved. Concentration effect of the filling agent on tensile properties of composite film was revealed. Data of infrared (IR) spectrometry indicated a decrease in the density of hydrogen-bond net in HEC/organobentonite composite as compared with pristine HEC. Using microbiological tests, it was found that the HEC/organobentonite films exhibited bacteriostatic action against S. aureus and fungistatic action against molds.
