The properties of art paper and offset paper were measured, including whiteness, smoothness, gloss and absorbability. And these paper samples were printed using machine proofing with the uniform printing processes. Dot percentage and the tri-stimulus values (X, Y and Z) of dot areas and solid areas were tested with the spectrophotometer X-Rite 530 on the print paper samples. At last, dot gain curve and chromatic diagram were drawn after data analyzing and processing, and then the influences of paper properties on printing dot gain and gamut of color were analyzed. The results showed less dot gain value and greater gamut of color occurred because of higher smoothness, gloss, whiteness and lower absorbability to art paper when the printing conditions were definite, so the dot reproduction quality on the surface of art papers was better. But which of the above-mentioned were opposite to offset papers.

The properties of offset paper and art paper including smoothness, gloss and absorbability, dot percentage and the tri-stimulus values of every dot areas and solid areas of the printed paper samples were measured. Dot gain curve and chromatic diagram were drawn after dot gain values and chromatic coordinates (x, y) were calculated. The results showed that smaller dot gain value and greater color gamut occur on the art paper due to its higher smoothness, gloss and lower absorbability when the printing conditions were the same, so the printing dot reproduction quality on the surface of art paper is better. However because offset paper has lower smoothness and gloss, higher absorbability compared with art paper, therefore the dot reproduction quality on offset paper is not as good as art paper.

The In-Mold Roller is a revolutionary printing process by which objects are 3D decorated. The products decorated by In-Mold Roller are protected from water and fading. These kinds of decorations strongly increase the beauty, desirability and value of the objects. The In-Mold Roller is now using either of gravure printing and screen printing to print PET film. However, there are some problems with these two techniques. This research is to investigate the potential use of combining In-Mold Roller with digital inkjet printing in 3D decoration, e.g. in personalized printing services. The study results found show that digital inkjet printing to the PET film and then transfer to the ABS, the solid ink densities (SIDs) of primaries would increase. The tone values increases (TVIs) from highlight and middle (around 0~60%) were generally higher than those in shadows. The shapes and sizes of color gamut were also varied according to different kinds of digital UV inkjet printing processes. Moreover, after transferred, the color gamut became smaller.

The influences of the paper properties on ink-jet printing quality are very complex. In order to predict the printing quality quickly and accurately, it is necessary to establish a mathematical model and an evaluation system, based on which we can estimate the paper used for ink-jet printing is suitable or not. In this paper, five kinds of ink-jet papers with different properties were chosen, and the properties including brightness (X2),gloss(X3),roughness(X4),air permeability(X5) and absorbency(X6), were tested; then ink-jet printing in the same conditions was carried out and different printing parameters were tested, including solid density(D),dot-gain(DG),print contrast(K)and hue(H). Through combining analysis of each single printing quality parameter with some paper properties by using PCA of SPSS, the correlation functions D/DG/K/H(X2, X3, X4, X5, X6) were obtained. Meanwhile, a comprehensive function Y(D, DG, K, H) involving the printing quality parameters was achieved through synthesis data processing of SPSS. This study shows the influences of paper properties on the printing quality parameters and their corresponding weights, and it also proposes a prediction model of paper printability, which can provide a theory reference for printing work in ink-jet printing.

Offset paper properties have great influence on the quality of print matter. Eleven offset paper samples were printed by IGT printability tester, then the density and L*a*b values of printed samples were measured. The relationship between paper properties and optical density or color gamut of paper printed was studied. The results show that main density increases with the increased ink quantity before the main density reaches saturation, the saturation density becomes greater with increased ink absorbency. When the smoothness is larger, lower ink quantity is needed for reaching saturation density, and larger color gamut is obtained. This study will provide references for the paper making and printing enterprises.

The paper properties such as roughness, gloss, surface wettability and other factors have great influence on the dot reproduction attributes of presswork, and different paper factor has different effect weight on the dot reproduction. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a new method to analyze the influence of paper properties on the dot reproduction. The method is to apply the grey relational analysis to analyze the influence law and the effect weight of paper factors on the dot reproduction during inkjet printing, which could provide theoretical guidance for improving the printability of paper. The grey relational analysis is a multi-factor statistical analysis method, which is based on the sample data and the grey incidence of various factors and is used to describe the strength, size and the order of the relationship between the factors. In this experiment, five types of inkjet printing paper were used to test their printing performance, and then the dot gain data were dealt with by the grey relational analysis method. Results showed that paper properties had a great influence on ink setting. Ink drop diffused and deformed less and dot gain was small when paper had smooth surface. According to the correlation coefficient degree of paper properties which influence on the dot gain of inkjet printing, the sequence was whiteness, roughness, surface wettability and gloss. Whiteness and roughness could significantly influence dot gain, followed by surface wettability, and gloss with minimal impact. Experiment indicated that the grey relational analysis was a simple and effective tool to analyze the influence of paper properties on the dot reproduction of presswork.

Paper printability directly affects the printing process and the final quality of printing matter. Therefore, it is significant to establish accurate, scientific, reasonable comprehensive evaluation model of the paper printability. Five art paper samples were researched in this paper. Different paper properties including whiteness, opacity, smoothness, ink absorption, tensile strength and burst strength were tested. The comprehensive evaluation model of art paper printability was obtained by using SPSS software. Then printing dot gain rate, printing density, printing glossiness and overprint rate were measured for verifying predicted results. Results show that the evaluation model can provide a practical and quantitative method for rapid evaluation of comprehensive printability of art paper.

Tension wood (TW) is an abnormal tissue of hardwood trees; although it has been isolated from most parts of the tree, it is frequently found on the upper side of branches and leaning stems. TW has been classically associated with geotropic alignment, but more recently it has been associated with fast growth. Paper made from TW is generally lower in strength properties. Consequently, the paper industries' growing dependence on fast growing, short- rotation trees will result in higher amounts of TW in the final product and a corresponding reduction in strength.Relatively few studies have dealt with the role of TW in the structure of paper. It was suggested that the lower strength properties of TW were due to a combination of factors, namely, its unique morphology, compression failures in the cell wall, and lower hemicellulose content. Central to the unique morphology of the TW fiber is the thick gelatinous layer (G-layer) composed almost entirely of pure cellulose.
