Improve the Fatigue Performance of Welded Joints with Undercuts by TIG Dressing Treatment

Undercuts often exists in the surface at weld toe. Undercuts affects the capability of weld subjected to dynamic loading greatly and fatigue cracks usually initiate from these zones with undercuts. Combining with low-alloy middle strength steel 16Mn,study of increasing the fatigue strength and the fatigue life was carried out. Compared with specimen without defects, the fatigue strength of specimen with undercuts has been increased by 10~20%. Study also shows that comparing with as-welded specimen with defects, with TIG dressing treatment, fatigue strength of cruciform weld joint of steel 16Mn has been increased by 70%, fatigue life by 5~8 times. Compared with as-welded specimen without defects, fatigue strength has been increased by 34%, fatigue life by 3~4 times. Undercuts have no adverse effects on fatigue property of welded joints under TIG dressing.

A tension-compression cycle fatigue test was performed in order to study the fatigue property of C50 concrete with pre-cracks in cyclic loading. The stress ratio was-1 and the amplitude was 0.2 MPa ~1.30 MPa. The results show that the modified coefficient of fatigue strength is 0.198~0.265 and the infinite life fatigue strength is below 0.45MPa. While the log value of fatigue life is approximately linear with the amplitude of fatigue load stress, the discreteness of fatigue life, the particularity of concrete, has little to do with the amplitude. The S-N, P-N fatigue life curves and the constant fatigue life diagram of pre-crack concrete are obtained.

One general method for improving the fatigue strength of welded joints is introduction of compressive residual stress by peening. However, there is concern that the fatigue strength of the welded joint may decrease if excessive preloading is applied after peening. It has been found that fatigue strength decreased after applying compressive preloading to a welded joint due to cancellation of the compressive stress at the weld toe. In the present research, the influence of excessive preloading on the fatigue strength of welded joints with compressive residual stress at the weld toe was clarified by experiments using hammer peening with an improved pin. When hammer peening was applied to welded joints, increasing the radius of the weld toe reduced the decrease of compressive residual stress due to excessive preloading. As a result, the decrease of the fatigue strength of the welded joint was also reduced.

The existing S-N curves by effective notch stress to assess the fatigue life of gusset welded joints can result in reduced accuracy due to the oversimplification of bead geometries. The present work proposes the parametric formulae of stress concentration factor (SCF) for as-welded gusset joints based on the spline model, by which the effective notch stress can be accurately calculated for fatigue resistance assessment. The spline model is also modified to make it applicable to the additional weld. The fatigue resistance of as-welded and additional-welded specimens is assessed considering the geometric effects and weld profiles. The results show that the error of SCFs by the proposed formulae is proven to be smaller than 5%. The additional weld can increase the fatigue life by as great as 9.4 times, mainly because the increasing weld toe radius and weld leg length lead to the smaller SCF. The proposed series of S-N curves, considering different SCFs, can be used to assess the welded joints with various geometric parameters and weld profiles.

The fatigue property is significantly affected by the inner inclusions in steel. Due to the inhomogeneity of inclusion distribution in the micro-scale, it is not straightforward to quantify the effect of inclusions on fatigue behavior. Various investigations have been performed to correlate the inclusion characteristics, such as inclusion fraction, size, and composition, with fatigue life. However, these studies are generally based on vast types of steels and even for a similar steel grade, the alloy concept and microstructure information can still be of non-negligible difference. For a quantitative analysis of the fatigue life improvement with respect to the inclusion engineering, a systematic and carefully designed study is still needed to explore the engineering dimensions of inclusions. Therefore, in this study, three types of bearing steels with inclusions of the same types, but different sizes and amounts, were produced with 50 kg hot state experiments. The following forging and heat treatment procedures were kept consistent to ensure that the only controlled variable is inclusion. The fatigue properties were compared and the inclusions that triggered the fatigue cracks were analyzed to deduce the critical sizes of inclusions in terms of fatigue failure. The results show that the critical sizes of different inclusion types vary in bearing steels. The critical size of the spinel is 8.5 μm and the critical size of the calcium aluminate is 13.5 μm under the fatigue stress of 1200 MPa. In addition, with the increase of the cleanliness of bearing steels, the improvement of fatigue properties will reach saturation. Under this condition, further increasing of the cleanliness of the bearing steel will not contribute to the improvement of fatigue property for the investigated alloy and process design.

This paper focus on fatigue problem of submarine pipelines, four points bending full scale fatigue experiment were conducted on X65 pipelines butt joints specimens, utilizing pipeline full scale fatigue test machine developed by CNPC. Meanwhile contrast test was also carried out on small specimens. The results show that the fatigue strength of full scale welded joints is lower than the small scale joints. Owing to having no regard for the influence of residual stress and size effect, the small test would provide dangerous results. The fatigue property of full scale welded joints only meets the requirement of DNV C203 W3 curve, and meets the needs of DNV C203 F3 curve basically while not meet BS 7608 F2 curve’s requirements which relatively demand higher. Weld toe and geometric discontinuous near weld root is the weak point for the whole welded joints.

Fatigue test of the welded joint of 5083 aluminum alloy with smooth and height of specimen and the weld zone than the high test measurement and theoretical stress concentration coefficient calculation, the weld reinforcement effect of stress concentration on the fatigue performance of welded joints. The results show that: Smooth tensile strength of specimens for 264MPa, fatigue strength is 95MPa, the tensile strength of the 36%. Higher tensile strength of specimens for 320MPa, fatigue strength is 70MPa, the tensile strength of the 22%. Higher specimen stress concentration coefficient is 1.64, the stress concentration to the weld toe becomes fatigue initiation source, and reduces the fatigue strength and the fatigue life of welded joints.

The article presents the results of research on low cycle fatigue strength of welded joints of structural steel S960QL. Two types of butt welds were analysed: I-joints and V-joints. The tests were performed under load controlled using the total strain amplitude εac. Fatigue life analysis was conducted based on the Manson-Coffin-Basquin equation, which made it possible to determine fatigue parameters. High concordance was found of the adopted description model with experimental results. Studies have shown differences in the fatigue life of the various joints analysed, wherein I-joints showed about 20-50% higher fatigue life. Fractographic tests of fatigue fractures in joints revealed the details of fatigue cracking and differences in the propagation rate of fatigue cracks.

Butt-joint specimens of Q235B low-strength steel were treated by TIG dressing and ultrasonic peening combined method. The paper presents comparative fatigue test for welded specimens in the as-welded condition and specimens treated by TIG dressing, ultrasonic peening treatment (UPT) and the combined method. When the ratio of stress R=0.1, contrasted with the specimens in as welded condition, the fatigue strength of the specimens treated by TIG dressing is increased by 36%. The fatigue strength of the specimens treated by the combined method and UPT are almost the same, which are increased by 57% and 56% respectively. In the high stress level, weld toe treated by the combined method has smaller stress concentration factor than that of UPT, resulting in less release of residual compressive stress. So it's more effective to improve the fatigue life by the combined method. While in the low stress level, the residual compressive stress of weld toe treated by the combined method and UPT are nearly the same. Besides, the effect of stress concentration factor is smaller, thus the fatigue life of the two methods have little difference.
