At 7th plenary session of 10th Beijing municipal committee, the development strategy of accelerating the implementation of the "Humanistic Beijing, Hi-tech Beijing and Green Beijing" is put forward on the height of building the world city. How to construct Beijing urban environment to a new level is worth concerning. Based on historical analysis of urban environment construction of New York, London and Tokyo, four principles that Beijing should insist on in the progress of urban environmental construction are presented.

<p>As a world city, New York is famous for many reasons; as a large city located primarily on islands at a complex of rivers, bays, and tidal straits, it has long depended on structural engineering for viability. Prominent structures include underwater vehicular and rail tunnels, bridges of every structural type, and aqueducts. Ten different buildings have held the world record for height, two arch bridges have held the world record for span, and four different suspension bridges have held the world record for their main span. With a multitude of successful businesses and the physical constraints of the geography, the motivation for technical innovation were present, and engineers were ready for the challenges.</p><p>These structures have generally not been built because they would break records, but rather because they served a purpose. For example, the Brooklyn Bridge, with a center span fiIy percent longer than the second- longest at the time of its construction, was built because ferries were the only transportation between New York and Brooklyn, then the first and third largest cities in the country. There is a close correlation, decade by decade and beginning in the 1880s, between what was feasible in terms of structural engineering and what has been built to enable the city to grow and prosper. This paper will examine that correlation and engineers’ role in the city’s evolution.</p>

This concluding chapter examines the hierarchical nature of the markets in capital, which constitute the peak markets of the world capitalist system. It also reconsiders the central-bank connections between Tokyo, London, and New York as vital inner links within a larger set of world-city geographies. In a century of violent changes, these “capital city” geographies have been remarkably persistent. The great Tokyo bubble of 1989–90 was the greatest yet of its kind, but it now seems relatively modest next to the New York and London bubbles of 2007–8. Each of these “capital city” bubbles showed a mix of classic and novel features. Each also revealed, again, the centrality of the central banks themselves.

For its World Employment Conference in June 1976 the ILO prepared a report [2] in which it put forward the idea that the development strategy for the future should aim at meeting certain "basic needs" for the poorest 20 per¬cent of the people in the different countries of the world. One point ILO put across was that it would take considerably less time to reach a given set of basic needs targets if income within the different countries could be redistributed for the benefit of the poorest 20 percent. The ILO demonstrated the magnitude of the problem by the help of illustrations drawn from a working paper prepared for the ILO [1]. The minimum basic needs which are listed by the ILO include personal consumption items like food, clothing and housing, and services which in many countries are provided by public authorities like water, health, sanitation and education. In addition the ILO report also stresses qualitative elements of development, and calls for greater participation of the poor in decision¬making in matters concerning their own future.

The aim of the study is to assess the availability of urban space for people with limited mobility (PLM). Research objectives: - assessment of urban areas - determining the level of accessibility of the urban environment by assigning accessibility indices to certain territories (quarters); - testing using the example of separate quarters of the city of Arkhangelsk. Two non-adjacent city blocks located in its central part were selected for testing. According to the results of the study, it is possible to conclude that the availability of the urban environment for PLM in the selected quarters is: 37.2% for the first quarter, 42.1% for the second quarter. There is no comprehensive infrastructure suitable for PLM in the territory. Among the main problems are poor coating of footpaths, barriers in the form of curbs, the absence of railings on stairs, canopies and ramps, as well as the lack of equipped recreation places. A feature and advantage of the method is that the purpose of the study is not just a description of the quality characteristics of accessibility, but the determination of specific indicators of the security of various complex components of a comfortable urban environment. Integrated monitoring of the quality of the urban environment for PLM will allow the implementation of targeted programs and activities, taking into account their relevance to the expected effects. This contributes to the prudent use of financial resources. The totality of development programs and measures for individual territories will determine the development strategy of the city as a whole.

This chapter locates and integrates contemporary rampant urbanization with two other macro features of our times, intensive corporate globalization and anthropogenic climate change. Corporate globalization is derived as the latest of three global economic integrations. Each globalization has been characterized by urbanizations previously unparalleled in scale but that have been underestimated in importance. In the contemporary case, the world city network is described as the edifice of corporate globalization. This is described in terms of both the top 20 leading cities and shifts since 2000. A mixture of stability and change is found with the most important cities, notably London and New York, remaining dominant while a West–East shift has occurred, especially featuring Chinese cities. A broader vista is presented as planetary urbanization in which beyond the world city network all planetary spaces are shown to be changed by contemporary urbanization. This is extended historically to provide a long-term approach to anthropogenic climate change indicting urban demand. The conclusion is that urbanization, globalization, and climate should be understood in unison.

Turkmenistan is currently one of the key suppliers in the global natural gas market, and it is important to examine its competitive position in the world. The aim of this article is to forecast the development strategy of its gas sector. To achieve this aim, the authors first examined: (1) Turkmenistan’s position in the global gas market and the structure of its oil and gas sector; (2) the share of gas in Turkmenistan’s exports. They then conducted an analysis of the causal relationship between FDI and GDP. The above research made it possible to conduct a comprehensive SWOT analysis. Based on the SWOT analysis, three sector development scenarios were developed: pessimistic, realistic, and optimistic. On their basis, the gas sector in Turkmenistan can build strategies for its development, considering the impact of market and non-market factors.

In this paper, the author points to a great significance of the Corridor X and the Danube-Morava-Vardar-Thessalonica bay projects. It would create conditions for connecting not only Serbia and the surrounding countries but the whole Europe with the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Canal. The author is of the opinion that there are good opportunities for cooperation on these projects between Serbia and the interested countries, and between the national and the world capital. These two projects, as well as the 'Juzni tok' pipeline, should be one of the priority aims in the development strategy of the country.
