The tensile and low cycle fatigue tests were carried out on alumina short fibers reinforced Al-Si piston alloy composites (Al-Si MMCs). Three Al-Si MMCs reinforced with 10, 17 and 25 vol.% of alumina short fibers were prepared to investigate the effects of volume fraction on tensile and low cycle fatigue properties at room temperature (RT) and 350°C. The results showed that the tensile strength decreased with the increasing of volume fraction of fibers at RT and was slight different at 350°C. Among the three MMCs, the 17%-MMCs showed highest stress level under the low cycle fatigue tests. The fatigue cracks were usually initiated from the clustered and large size fibers near the surface of specimen, propagated along the fiber/matrix interface at RT and grew rapidly by means of broken the fibers at 350°C.

High temperature low cycle fatigue properties and fracture behavior of Inconel 625 nickel-base superalloy welding joint at 760oC were investigated under fully reversed total strain-controlled mode. The fatigue life and cyclic stress-strain data were analyzed to determine the individual strain fatigue parameters. It is noted that the welding joint exhibits the cyclic strain hardening and stability. The fatigue cracks initiate predominantly on the free surface of fatigue specimens and propagate in an intergranular mode or a mixed transgranular and intergranular mode.

In order to investigate the effect of plasma nitriding treatment on fatigue behavior of titanium alloys, very high cycle fatigue tests were carried out for Ti-6Al-4V alloy using an ultrasonic fatigue machine under load control conditions for stress ratios of R=-1 at frequency of ƒ=20KHz. Experiment results showed that plasma nitriding treatment played the principal role in the internal fatigue crack initiation. More importantly, plasma nitriding treatment had a detrimental effect on fatigue properties of the investigated Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the fatigue strength of material after plasma nitriding treatment appeared to be significantly reduced about 17% over the untreated material.

Low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties of a powder metallurgy(PM) nickel base superalloy FGH720Li were systematically studied in this work, including smooth LCF and notched LCF tested at various temperatures and different stress. The relationship between the fatigue life and applied stress was analyzed both for smooth fatigue and notch fatigue tests. The effects of loading frequency and stress ratio on LCF behavior were also studied. As an important influencing factor of the fatigue life in powder metallurgy superalloy, the effect of inclusions on LCF life was also investigated. The results showed that the fatigue properties of FGH720Li alloy was excellent, when tested at the temperature of 450°C and applied stress of 1230MPa, the fatigue life could exceed 5×104 cycles. When tested at 650°C and 1150MPa, the average fatigue life was still beyond 2×105 cycles.

Recently, most of fatigue cracks in ship structures are reported within a few years after delivery. This type of fatigue characteristics cannot be explained adequately by the S-N curve based on high cycle fatigue. Calculation results under critical loading conditions reveal that stress magnitude higher than three times the yield stress occurs at some critical locations. It shows the fatigue cracks are related to low cycle fatigue. But the existing recommended design procedures in maritime industry do not properly cover low cycle fatigue problems. This work represents the first step in an effort to develop a design code that addresses low cycle fatigue problems. Low cycle fatigue test for uniform round specimen made of base/weld metal and for cruciform welded joint are carried out under constant amplitude alternating load, controlled by strain. Strain-cycle curves for the base metal and weld joints show good agreement with published data as well as some code recommended design curves.

A reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic (RAF/M) steel, JLF-1, is considered as one of the candidate structure material of the fusion reactors and supercritical water-cooled reactor (SCWR). Low cycle fatigue properties of JLF-1 steel at elevated temperature are the design base to provide adequate design margin against postulated mechanism that could experience during its design life, such as stress range, plastic deformation, and cyclic softening etc. However, the reduction in design margin is significant when the cyclic softening happens in cyclic deformation at RT, 673K, 873K. Thus, for the application as the structural materials, it is necessary to evaluate low cycle fatigue behavior and cyclic softening of JLF-1 steel at elevated temperature since those properties of material at elevated temperature are the key issue for design.

The material of Ti–6Al–4V has been widely applied in various industries, such as automobile, aerospace, and medical due to its high specific strength, superior thermal stability and strong corrosion resistance. In the recent decades, selective laser melting (SLM) has become an attractive method to fabricate Ti–6Al–4V parts, thanks to its significant advantages in low material consumption, the high degree of freedom in design, low carbon footprint, etc. Predictability of SLM material fatigue properties is especially important for the safety-critical structures under dynamic load cases. The present research is aimed at evaluating the low cycle fatigue (LCF) performance of SLM Ti–6Al–4V under high loading states. LCF tests were performed for as-built and annealed SLM Ti–6Al–4V. Comparison between LCF properties of SLM Ti–6Al–4V and the wrought Ti–6Al–4V was also made. It was found that as-built SLM Ti–6Al–4V demonstrated a comparable LCF performance with the wrought material. The LCF life of as-built SLM Ti–6Al–4V was longer than that of wrought Ti–6Al–4V at lower strain amplitudes. However, the wrought Ti–6Al–4V had better LCF performance at higher strain amplitudes. The results revealed that the porosity in the as-built SLM material exerted much more impact on the degradation of the material at high strain amplitudes. Annealing deteriorated the LCF performance of SLM Ti–6Al–4V material due to the formation of coarser grains. The cyclic Ramberg–Osgood and the Basquin–Coffin–Manson models were fitted to depict the cyclic stress–strain and the strain–life curves for the SLM Ti–6Al–4V, based on which the LCF performance parameters were determined. In addition, the fatigue fracture surfaces were observed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the results indicated that fatigue cracks originated from the surface or subsurface defects.

In this paper, the static and low-cycle-fatigue (LCF) behavior of wrought samples of 17-4 PH stainless steel (SS) manufactured via Selective Laser Melting (SLM) are presented. On the one hand, several scholars have studied SLM materials and literature reports a huge amount of data as for the high-cycle-fatigue (HCF) behavior. On the other hand, few are the data available on the LCF behavior of those materials. The aim of the present research is to provide reliable data for an as-build 17-4 PH steel manufactured via SLM techniques. Only with quantitative data, indeed, it is possible to exploit all the advantages that this technology can offer. In this regard, both quasi-static (QS) and low-cycle-fatigue tests were performed on Additive Manufacturing (AM) cylindrical samples. Through QS tests, the constitutive low has been defined. Strain-controlled fatigue tests on an electromechanical machine were performed on 12 samples designed according to the ASTM standard. Tests were continued also after the stabilization was reached (needed for the cyclic curve described with the Ramberg-Osgood equation) to obtain also the fatigue (ε-N) curve. Results show that the material has a softening behavior. The Basquin-Coffin-Manson (BCM) parameters were tuned on the basis of the ε-N combinations after rupture.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the mechanical behavior of carbon/flax hybrid composites under static and fatigue tensile loading. The failure characteristics and parameters used in the fatigue tests were deduced from the static ones. The effect of the applied stress level, hybridization and stacking sequences on the stiffness, hysteresis loops, dissipated energy and damping, were studied for a various number of cycles during fatigue tests. The Wohler S-N curves were constructed to investigate the effect of hybridization on the fatigue behavior. The results obtained show that the fatigue performance as well as the fatigue resistance increase with the increase of the volume fraction of carbon fiber. Nevertheless, the damping ratio and the fatigue life increase with the increase of the flax fiber volume fraction.

The paper presents an experimental study on a new type viscoelastic damper, which is expected to have better energy dissipation capability. Tests on the dampers’ mechanical properties, including shear storage modulus, shear loss modulus, and loss factor, were conducted using reduced scale specimens, and took strain amplitude, loading frequency and ambient temperature as test parameters. Aging tests, low cycle and high cycle fatigue tests were also conducted. Particularly, the low cycle fatigue behavior under a strain of 300% and the basic mechanical behavior under strains of 300%-420% were investigated. Test results suggest that the dependency of the mechanical properties on frequency and temperature is small, the energy dissipation capacity is stable for both large and small displacement, and the damper reaches a strain of 420% without failure.
