The modal flexibility was more effective than structural frequency and displacement mode on damage detection of structures, it could be calculated easily based on low order mode of box girder. The damage detection method was proposed based on the modal flexibility curvature in this article, this indicator considered the impact of length difference of adjacent elements on modal flexibility matrix. Damage sensitivities of indicators is contrasted. Calculating results show that flexibility curvature difference has good detection effect on single point damage, multi-point damage and side element damage. The method in this article has good effect on damage detection of box girder.

A novel two-stage method is proposed to properly identify the location and severity of damage in plate structures. In the first stage, a superposition of modal flexibility curvature (SMFC) is adopted to locate the damage accurately, and the identification index of modal flexibility matrix is improved. The low-order modal parameters are used and a new column matrix is formed based on the modal flexibility matrix before and after the structure is damaged. The difference of modal flexibility matrix is obtained, which is used as a damage identification index. Meanwhile, based on SMFC, a method of weakening the “vicinity effect” is proposed to eliminate the impact of the surrounding elements to the damaged elements when damage identification is carried out for the plate-type structure. In the second stage, the objective function based on the flexibility matrix is constructed, and according to the damage location identified in the first stage, the actual damage severity is determined by the enhanced whale optimization algorithm (EWOA). In addition, the effects of 3% and 10% noise on damage location and severity estimation are also studied. By taking a simply supported beam and a four-side simply supported plate as examples, the results show that the method can accurately estimate the damage location and quantify the damage severity without noise. When considering noise, the increase of noise level will not affect the assessment of damage location, but the error of quantifying damage severity will increase. In addition, damage identification of a steel-concrete composite bridge (I-40 Bridge) under four damage cases is carried out, and the results show that the modified method can evaluate the damage location and quantify 5%–92% of the damage severity.

The deflection of the beam estimated from modal flexibility matrix (MFM) indirectly is used in structural damage detection due to the fact that deflection is less sensitive to experimental noise than the element in MFM. However, the requirement for mass-normalized mode shapes (MMSs) with a high spatial resolution and the difficulty in damage quantification restricts the practicability of MFM-based deflection damage detection. A damage detection method using the deflections estimated from MFM is proposed for beam structures. The MMSs of beams are identified by using a parked vehicle. The MFM is then formulated to estimate the positive-bending-inspection-load (PBIL) caused deflection. The change of deflection curvature (CDC) is defined as a damage index to localize damage. The relationship between the damage severity and the deflection curvatures is further investigated and a damage quantification approach is proposed accordingly. Numerical and experimental examples indicated that the presented approach can detect damages with adequate accuracy at the cost of limited number of sensors. No finite element model (FEM) is required during the whole detection process.

A comparative study of the girder damage identification of Jintang Cable-stayed Bridge in Zhoushan Island-Land Project using the deflection index, the cable tension index, the beam bottom bending stress index, the modal curvature index and the modal flexibility matrix is introduced. By means of finite element method, a series of damage cases associated with the box girder are analyzed. The result shows that, for different damage types, the best effect of the girder damage identification is the modal curvature index, followed by the cable tension index, the beam bottom bending stress index is nearly of the same effect as the modal flexibility matrix index, and the worst is the deflection index.

Background:Inborn metabolic disorders (IMDs) currently encompass more than 1,500 diseases with new ones still to be identified1. Each of them is characterised by a genetic defect affecting a metabolic pathway. Only few of them have curative treatments, that target the respective metabolic pathway. Commonly, treatment examples include diet, substrate reduction therapies, enzyme replacement therapies, gene therapy and biologicals, enabling IMD-patient now to survive to adulthood. About 30 % of all IMDs involve the musculoskeletal system and are here referred to as rare metabolic RMDs. Generally, IMDs are very heterogenous with respect to symptoms and severity, often being systemic and affecting more children than adults. Thus, challenges include certified advanced training of adult metabolic experts, standardised transition plans, social support and development of therapies for diseases that do not have any cure yet.Objectives:Introduction of MetabERN, its structure and objectives, highlighting on the unique features and challenges of metabolic RMDs and describing the involvement of patient representation in MetabERN.Methods:MetabERN is stratified in 7 subnetworks (SNW) according to the respective metabolic pathways and 9 work packages (WP), including administration, dissemination, guidelines, virtual counselling framework, research/clinical trials, continuity of care, education and patient involvement. The patient board involves a steering committee and single point of contacts for each subnetwork and work package, respectively2. Projects include identifying the need of implementing social science to assess the psycho-socio-economic burden of IMDs, webinars on IMDs and their transition as well as surveys on the impact of COVID-193 on IMD-patients and health care providers (HCPs), social assistance for IMD-patients and analysing the transition landscape within Europe.Results:The MetabERN structure enables bundling of expertise, capacity building and knowledge transfer for faster diagnosis and better health care. Rare metabolic RMDs are present in all SNWs that require unique treatments according to their metabolic pathways. Implementation of social science to assess the psycho-socio-economic burden of IMDs is still underused. Involvement of patient representatives is essential for a holistic healthcare not only focusing on clinical care, but also on the quality of life for IMD-patients. Surveys identified unmet needs of patient care, patients having little information on national support systems and structural deficits of healthcare systems to ensure HCP can provide adequate clinical care during transition phases. These results are collected by MetabERN and forwarded to the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) of the European Commission (EC) to be addressed further.Conclusion:MetabERN offers an infrastructure of virtual healthcare for patients with IMDs. Thus, in collaboration with ERN ReCONNET, MetabERN can assist in identifying rare metabolic disorders of RMDs to shorten the odyssey of diagnosis and advise on their respective therapies. Damage detection and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for bridges employing bridge-vehicle interaction has created considerable interest in recent times. In this regard, a significant amount of work is present on the bridge-vehicle interaction models and on damage models. Surface roughness on bridges is typically used for detailing models and analyses are present relating surface roughness to the dynamic amplification of response of the bridge, the vehicle or to the ride quality. This paper presents the potential of using surface roughness for damage detection of bridge structures through bridge-vehicle interaction. The concept is introduced by considering a single point observation of the interaction of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with a breathing crack traversed by a point load. The breathing crack is treated as a nonlinear system with bilinear stiffness characteristics related to the opening and closing of crack. A uniform degradation of flexural rigidity of an Euler-Bernoulli beam traversed by a point load is also considered in this regard. The surface roughness of the beam is essentially a spatial representation of some spectral definition and is treated as a broadband white noise in this paper. The mean removed residuals of beam response are analyzed to estimate damage extent. Uniform velocity and acceleration conditions of the traversing load are investigated for the appropriateness of use. The detection and calibration of damage is investigated through cumulant based statistical parameters computed on stochastic, normalized responses of the damaged beam due to passages of the load. Possibilities of damage detection and calibration under benchmarked and non-benchmarked cases are discussed. Practicalities behind implementing this concept are also considered.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test the effects of corporate brand symbolism on consumer satisfaction and loyalty on a sample of Australian automobile consumers. Design/methodology/approach – Survey research was employed to test the study hypotheses. The regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationships between an independent variable (corporate brand symbolism) and dependent variables (consumer satisfaction and loyalty). Findings – Support was found for all hypotheses formulated in this study. Regression results reveal consistent favourable and significant effects of corporate brand symbolism on both consumer satisfaction and loyalty. Research limitations/implications – Although this paper makes contributions in international marketing, the cross-sectional nature of the data collection method limits the information gained to the single point in time. This research studied the impact of corporate brand symbolism on consumers of one original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Having a larger number of participating car manufacturers/OEMs would have provided a wider insight. However, time and resources limitation did not allow to study a larger sample. In the future, practitioners are recommended to further understand the relationship between self and social aspects of brand symbolism in order to formulate more targeted communication strategies. Practical implications – The findings of this study point to the strategic role of the brand in generating both satisfaction and loyalty. In the light of increasing advertising costs and decreasing consumer loyalty, strengthening corporate brand symbolism makes a lot of economic sense. The findings suggest that managers need to take into account consumer need for identity expression and consider this in their branding strategies. Social implications – Humans are social beings by nature. However, international brand research has paid relatively little attention to how products are used by consumers in everyday life, including their social life. Consumer behaviours increasingly depend on social meanings they imbue brands with beyond products’ functional utility. It is argued the focus of symbolic consumption needs to be broadened and integrated more with social science concepts. Originality/value – This study captures a construct of corporate brand symbolism by including self and social aspects of symbolism. The current study also comprehensively measures consumer loyalty, including cognitive, affective and behavioural types of loyalty.


An experiment is described in which pairs of water drops of different size were caused to collide during free fall at a velocity equal to the difference of their terminal velocities in still air. The collision parameters of trajectory, drop size, and drop charge were controlled with precision, and impacts of a particular kind could be reproduced indefinitely. By using synchronized flash photography, well in excess of 30000 measurements were taken from more than 10000 frames of film of the resulting behaviour of the water-drop pairs. Data are discussed in terms of an impact parameter, X which defines the relative trajectory of the drops in the centre-of-mass frame, and three energy parameters e C , e R and e T which delineate the properties electrostatic energy, rotational energy, and total energy of the two-drop system before impact. Input parameters were confined to values appropriate to natural rainfall. After collision four basic types of rotation occurred, the particular kind of rotation depending upon X , e C , e R and e T . Measured rates of rotation were compared with that to be expected from a simple model of inelastic collision between solid spheres and showed a marked resemblance. Distributions of mass after collision were compared with a model based upon a bimodal Gaussian distribution to good effect. In addition, frequency distributions of the number of drop products resulting from a given collision were prepared showing the controlling influence of the impact parameter, X , and the effect of varying drop charge. Relations were also established between statistical values for the coalescence efficiency of a given drop pair and the input parameters; however, while all results were consistent and reproducible, the effect of drop charge could not be demonstrated by a simple model.

The sensitivity of the electromechanical impedance to structural damage under varying temperature is investigated in this paper. An approach based on maximizing cross-correlation coefficients is used to compensate temperature effects. The experiments are carried out on an air plane conform carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) panel (500mm x 500mm x 5mm) instrumented with 26 piezoelectric transducers of two different sizes. In a first step, the panel is stepwise subjected to temperatures between-50 °C and 100 °C. The influence of varying temperatures on the measured impedances and the capability of the temperature compensation approach are analyzed. Next, the sensitivity to a 200 J impact damage is analyzed and it is set in relation to the influence of a temperature change. It becomes apparent the impact of the transducer size and location on the quality of the damage detection. The results further indicate a significant influence of temperature on the measured spectra. However, applying the temperature compensation algorithm can reduce the temperature effect at the same time increasing the transducer sensitivity within its measuring area. The paper concludes with a discussion about the trade-off between the sensing area, where damage should be detected, and the temperature range, in which damage within this area can reliably be detected.
