Through the analysis on the data of monitoring water quality of typical reservoirs in Liaoning province, the major reservoirs in the province are in the state of mesotrophication or even eutrophication. The main pollutants are DO-consumption organic pollutants such as ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus. Despite years of special treatment, quality indexes about such nutrients are still high and they severely restrict improvement of the water quality. On the basis of the primary research, this article analyses the main reason for production of phosphorus and nitrogen, estimates the annual load of non point sources pollution and provides a basis for controlling of the pollution.

This paper adopts the indoor artificial rapid infiltration system of simulated soil columns to deal with several water-quality indexes of wastewater from Dongfeng Ditch. The test indicates the change of several indexes, such as COD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, Cr6+ after the treatment, analyzes the influential factors and display the wastewater treatment effects of the simulation method in laboratory with different soil components and different wet- dry ratios.

The research revealed in the paper considers the improvement of secondary treatment of wastewater in the aerobic reactor to provide removal of organics and nutrients. There were five types of polymer biofilm carriers taken into account initially; however, two of them were decided not to apply due to technological reasons. The main part of the research was divided into three substages to investigate each type of biofilm carrier. According to the literature review, the optimal efficiency may be reached if the carrier filling ratio is 10 to 30% of reactor volume. On this basis, there were three benches launched at each sub-stage with a corresponding filling ratio of 10, 20, and 30%. The fourth reactor at each sub-stage had no floating carrier to control the experiment. The research of all three types of carriers showed the effect of BOD removal in the range of 95–96% for benches equipped with a floating carrier, which can be considered similar to the control bench with the efficiency of 92%. In the case of ammonia nitrogen, the removal control bench showed only 55% of efficiency, while floating carriers helped to increase the efficiency up to 70–86%. Despite obtaining relatively positive results, the research has to be continued to achieve regulation requirements in treatment quality.

Based on the water quality investigation data of December in 2010, the water environment quality of Lv-tang River in Zhanjiang national urban wetland park was assessed using single water quality parameter model and integrated water quality index model. The results show that the water quality of Lv-tang River is worse than the national quality standards for Grade V. The water is polluted seriously. The main pollutants are total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and chemical oxygen demand CODCr with their average concentrations of 60.49 mg/L, 30.57 mg/L and 227.38mg/L, respectively. The averages of their single parameter pollution index are 30.25 , 19.79 and 8.74. The average of single parameter pollution index of the river is 8.23 which indicated that the river belongs to heavy pollution zone. The integrated water quality index was 22.5 showing that the river belongs to serious pollution zone.

The objective of this study was to simulate the hydrologic characteristic and water quality of 3S rivers system (Sekong, Sesan and Srepok) using SWAT model (Soil and Water Analysis Tool). Agriculture and forest are the main land use types in this basin accounting for more than 80 % of the total area. Therfore, nitrogen and phosphorus were selected to be parameters for water quality assessment. SWAT-CUP model was applied to calibrate the model for stream flow and water quality based on SUFI-2 (Sequential Uncertainty Fitting version 2) method. The model performance has been assessed by three statistical indices, including coefficient corellation (R2), Nash-Sutcliffe efficient coefficience (NSE) and percentage Bias (PBIAS). The results showed that SWAT model was well calibrated for simulating the streamflow and water quality with the values of R2 greater than 0.5 except for the Attapeu and Kontum stations, and of PBIAS less than 10 % and 35 % for streamflow and water quality, respectively. The well-calibrated SWAT model can be applied in predicting the hydrology and water quality for other application. Furthermore, it is a tool supporting the policy makers to offer a suitable decisions regarding the sustainable river basin management.

The impact of partially treated wastewater on the water quality of Notwane river stretch in the Gaborone region of Botswana was investigated. Water samples collected at effluent discharge point and three other sampling sites downstream were analyzed for pH, temperature, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Ammonia-nitrogen (Ammonia-N) and Nitrate-nitrogen (Nitrate-N). Sampling was conducted bi-weekly between February 2013 and April 2013. The ranges of measured parameters were:  pH (7.6-8.5), temperature (22-23ºC), BOD5 (11.2-27.0 mg/l), Ammonia-N (2.4-60.5 mg/l), Nitrate-N (20.6-28.6 mg/l). Analysis of variance, Games-Howel multiple comparisons and Pearson correlation were used to separate variable means. The results signal river non-point pollution due to runoff inflow of organics mainly from land use and domestic waste dumping by nearby dwellings. Temperature, BOD5, and pH range values were all within the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) limit while the maximum Ammonia-N and Nitrate-N were above BOBS limit by 50.5 mg/l and 6.6 mg/l, respectively. Regulations on indiscriminate waste dumping and discharge standards adherence should be enforced.

This study is only the second to use DNA fingerprinting technology in Maryland to identify fecal coliform sources in order to guide the implementation of water pollution control practices in a watershed with bacterial impairment. By combining the use of digital air photos and GPS with GIS, fieldwork is planned and conducted more efficiently because sample sites can be selected that accurately represent the physical environment of the study area. We can also return to the field and find our sample sites or locate new ones, even in the remotest part of the study area. It is also possible to more accurately map the data directly in the context of its physical environment, greatly increasing the quality of analysis. The integration of DNA fingerprinting techniques with GIS shows great promise for extending our capabilities to identify the controls on water quality and point sources of waterborne health hazards.

The natural waste stabilization pond of Vauciennes, located in the north of France, underwent regular monitoring from October 1981 to July 1991, within the framework of a programme studying the evolution of operation parameters related to the ageing of plants. This study enabled us to assess the variations in the quality of the discharge depending on the season, in particular concerning the nitrogen and phosphorus parameters. The input/output reports made it possible to make specifications concerning the variations of the loads to be treated and the overloads caused by rainy episodes, and the real performances of the plants in relation to rainfall, evaporation, hydraulic exchanges with the soil and interannual seasonal variations. The evolution of the treatment, characterised by the parameters of the treated effluent, was observed, on the basis of equivalent climate conditions. Lastly, the growth of the deposits and their location in the first pond observed based on the systematic establishment of a cartography of the bottom of the pond.

Water quality indexes are a tool used to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of a water body according to its use. The present study proposes the inclusion of oil and grease (OG) as a new water quality index (ICAMPFF-GA) parameter for the preservation of marine biota in tropical areas, since it is a typical pollutant found and measured in water bodies, causing damage to the aquatic environment. The normalized curve for OG was defined based on the percentage of surviving microorganism under a lethal concentration exposure of OG. The ICAMPFF-GA suitability was evaluated by its application to analyze marine water quality in the area of the sea outfall in the city of Cartagena, Colombia and comparing the trends of the outfall flow and the rainfall for 2017. Physical chemical data analyzed for the year 2017 shows that OG varies from 0.0 to 3.8 mg/L. The results show that the water quality index increases when rainfall and flow values increase for the rainy season. The ICAMPFF-GA can be a tool to evaluate the water quality of marine waters affected by the discharge of waters with oil and grease.

The study of the impact of logging activities on water and sediment quality of Sarawak forest streams is still scarce despite Sarawak being the largest exporter of timber in Malaysia. This study was aimed at determining the water and sediment quality of forest streams in Sarawak and the potential impact of logging activities. In situ parameters were measured, and water and sediment samples were collected at six stations before rain. Additionally, water quality was investigated at three stations after rain. The results showed that canopy removal resulted in large temperature variation and sedimentation in the forest streams. Lower suspended solids were found at stations with inactive logging (<2 mg/L) compared to active logging (10–16 mg/L) activities. The highest concentration of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in water and sediment was 4.4 mg/L, 77.6 μg/L, 0.17%, and 0.01%, respectively. Besides, significantly negative correlation of sediment nitrogen and water total ammonia nitrogen indicated the loss of nitrogen from sediment to water. Water quality of the streams deteriorated after rain, in particular, suspended solids which increased from 8.3 mg/L to 104.1 mg/L. This study reveals that logging activities have an impact on the water quality of Sarawak forest streams particularly in rainfall events.
