Morphological and Structural Modifications of Si-Based Nanostructures Synthesized from Metal Silicide Templates in IP6, Acid and Metal Chloride Solutions

Powders consisting of Si-based nanostructures were synthesized by the extraction of Ca atoms from CaSi2 powders using an inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) aqueous solution. The raw CaSi2 powders were simply immersed in a diluted IP6 solution, then dried. It is noted that the Si-based nanostructures were easily exfoliated from the powders to expose the surfaces corresponding to the Si {111} planes of the nanostructures. In addition, the Si-based nanostructures were also synthesized by metal atom extraction from SrSi2, BaSi2 and Mg2Si using the IP6 aqueous solution. It was found that the nanostructures mainly including the amorphous Si-oxide phase were obtained for the IP6-treated SrSi2, BaSi2 and Mg2Si powders. Moreover, the amorphous Si oxide-based nanostructures were synthesized from CaSi2 using citric acid, malic acid, FeCl3 and FeCl2 aqueous solutions. It was demonstrated that the morphological and structural properties of the synthesized Si-based nanostructures depend on the silicide templates and the solutions.

Linear-dendritic triblock copolymers of linear poly(ethylene glycol) and hyperbranched poly(citric acid) (PCA-PEG-PCA) were used as the reducing and capping agents to encapsulate gold and silver nanoparticles (AuNPs and AgNPs). PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers in four different molecular weights were synthesized using 2, 5, 10 and 20 citric acid/PEG molar ratios and were called A1, A2, A3 and A4, respectively. Nanoparticles were encapsulated simultaneously during the preparation process. AuNPs were simply synthesized and encapsulated by addition a boiling aqueous solution of HAuCl4 to aqueous solutions of A1, A2, A3 and A4. In the case of silver, an aqueous solution of AgNO3 was reduced using NaBH4 and AgNPs were encapsulated simultaneously by adding aqueous solutions of different PCA-PEG-PCA to protect the fabricated silver nanoparticles from aggregation. Encapsulated AuNPs and AgNPs were stable in water for several months and agglomeration did not occur. The synthesized silver and gold nanoparticles have been encapsulated within PCA-PEG-PCA macromolecules and have been studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. Studies reveal that there was a reverse relation between the size of synthesized AuNPs/AgNPs and the size of citric acid parts of PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers. For example, the prepared gold and silver nanoparticles by A3 copolymer are of an average size of 8 nm and 16 nm respectively. Finally, the loading capacity of A1, A2, A3 and A4 and the size of synthesized AuNPs and AgNPs were investigated using UV/Vis data and the corresponding calibration curve. It was found that the loading capacity of copolymers depends directly on the concentration of copolymers and their molecular weight.

The metastable zone width of an aqueous solution of KCI was measured as a function of the time and temperature of overheating above the equilibrium solubility temperature. It has been found that when the experiments follow close upon one another, the parameters of the preceding experiment affect the results of the experiment to follow.The results are interpreted in terms of hypotheses advanced in the literature to account for the effect of thermal history of solution. The plausibility and applicability of these hypotheses are assessed for the given cause of aqueous solution of a well soluble electrolyte.

AbstractIn this study, a new optical method is presented to determine the concentrations of NaCl and glucose aqueous solutions by using a thermo-elastic optical indicator microscope. By measuring the microwave near-field distribution intensity, concentration changes of NaCl and glucose aqueous solutions were detected in the 0–100 mg/ml range, when exposed to microwave irradiation at 12 GHz frequency. Microwave near-field distribution intensity decreased as the NaCl or glucose concentration increased due to the changes of the absorption properties of aqueous solution. This method provides a novel approach for monitoring NaCl and glucose in biological liquids by using a CCD sensor capable of visualizing NaCl and glucose concentrations without scanning.
