The application of nondestructive evaluation to creep-fatigue damage was examined in this paper. Generally, as the hold time of static load increases, the degradation of material becomes more rapid and the creep-fatigue life decreases. Therefore, in the evaluation of creep-fatigue strength and life of high-pressure vessel such as main steam pipe at high temperature is very important in power plants. In this study, the creep-fatigue behavior of P92 steel was evaluated nondestructively by the backscattered ultrasound using the creep-fatigue specimens. The results obtained by Rayleigh surface wave of backscattered ultrasound were compared and analyzed with the experimental parameters. Also, the relation between the SDA (slope of degraded area) and creep-fatigue life was examined. From the result of nondestructive test, we suggest that SDA would be used as the new parameter for the evaluation of creep-fatigue damage. As the degradation increased, the SDA decreased and also the creep-fatigue life decreased.

The Sodium Fast-cooled Reactor (SFR), are generation IV nuclear power plants, have a target operating temperature of 550°C which makes creep-fatigue behavior more critical than a generation III nuclear power plants. So it is important to understand the nature of creep-fatigue behavior of the piping material, Grade 91 steel. The creep-fatigue damage diagram of Grade 91 steel used in ASME-NH was derived using a conventional time-fraction testing method which was originally developed for type 300 stainless steels. Multiple studies indicate that the creep-fatigue damage diagram of Grade 91 steel developed using this testing method has excessive conservatism in it. Therefore, an alternative testing method was suggested by separating creep and fatigue using interrupted creep tests. The suggested method makes it possible to control creep life consumption freely which was difficult with the previous method. It also makes it easier to observe the interaction between creep and fatigue mechanisms and microstructural evolution. In conclusion, an alternative creep-fatigue damage diagram for Grade 91 steel at 550°C was developed using an interrupt creep fatigue testing method and FE model simulation.

The components of power plant such as main steam pipe and gas turbines are operated under static and cyclic load conditions. As the period of static load increases, the service life of these components decreases. Generally, the increase of cyclic load results in fatigue damage and the increase of static load period results in the metallurgical degradation by the effect of creep. Under the creep-fatigue interaction, cavities cause rapid degradation of material and decreases the creep-fatigue life of high temperature components. In this paper, creep-fatigue tests were performed to investigate the relationship between the cavity and creep-fatigue life under various tensile hold times. Test materials were HAZ and base metal of P122 (12 Cr -2 W ) alloy weldment. The effect of hold times on the cavity damage was examined and the fraction of cavity area was analyzed. From the linear relationship of Fca (fraction of cavity area) and experimental life, a new parameter for life evaluation, Fca, was introduced and the creep-fatigue life was predicted by Fca. Good agreement was found between experimental and predicted life. Under the same hold time condition, the Fca of HAZ was greater than that of base metal while the creep-fatigue life of HAZ was shorter than that of base metal.

This work investigates the relationship between the creep-fatigue life and ultrasonic test of creep-fatigue damage. Under the creep-fatigue interaction, the main cause of life reduction is the initiation and growth of microvoid with increasing hold time. The number/size of microvoid/cavity, the fraction of cavity area varied with the hold time. Therefore, the life evaluation using the microvoid with the variation of hold time is very informative for safety of components in power plants. In this study, using the heat resisting alloy, P122 steel for USC (ultra super critical) power plant, the creep-fatigue tests with various hold times and their ultrasonic inspection were carried out for the purpose of evaluation for creep-fatigue life. The results obtained by Rayleigh surface wave of backscattered ultrasound were compared and analyzed with the experimental parameters. The good agreement between the experimental life and the predicted life was obtained.

Strain-controlled low cycle fatigue (LCF) and creep-fatigue interaction (CFI) tests of K447A are conducted at 760oC in order to investigate the effects of different dwell times and strain ratios on the fatigue behavior and life. For the cases of stain ratio Rε=-1 with balanced hold time, the tensile and compressive mean stresses will generate. For the case of stain ratio Rε=-1 with compressive holding 60s, the tensile mean stress will produce. For the case of stain ratio Rε=-1 with tensile holding 60s, the compressive mean stress will produce. For the cases of stain ratio Rε=0.1 and Rε=-1with no hold time, the tensile mean stress will produce. The cyclic damage accumulation (CDA) method and modified CDA method were employed to predict the fatigue life for K447A, respectively. The fatigue life predicted by CDA method is within the scatter band of 18.2X. The fatigue life predicted by the modified CDA method agrees very well with the experimental life and the predicted life is well within the scatter band of 3.1X, which means that the modified CDA method is able to consider the influences of dwell time and strain ratio on the fatigue life of K447A.

A substantial amount of research effort has been applied to the field of environmentally assisted fatigue (EAF) due to the requirement to account for the EAF behaviour of metals for existing and new build nuclear power plants. We present the results of the European project INcreasing Safety in NPPs by Covering Gaps in Environmental Fatigue Assessment (INCEFA-PLUS), during which the sensitivities of strain range, environment, surface roughness, mean strain and hold times, as well as their interactions on the fatigue life of austenitic steels has been characterized. The project included a test campaign, during which more than 250 fatigue tests were performed. The tests did not reveal a significant effect of mean strain or hold time on fatigue life. An empirical model describing the fatigue life as a function of strain rate, environment and surface roughness is developed. There is evidence for statistically significant interaction effects between surface roughness and the environment, as well as between surface roughness and strain range. However, their impact on fatigue life is so small that they are not practically relevant and can in most cases be neglected. Reducing the environmental impact on fatigue life by modifying the temperature or strain rate leads to an increase of the fatigue life in agreement with predictions based on NUREG/CR-6909. A limited sub-programme on the sensitivity of hold times at elevated temperature at zero force conditions and at elevated temperature did not show the beneficial effect on fatigue life found in another study.

Components of conventional power plants are subject to potential damage mechanisms such as creep, fatigue and their combination. These mechanisms have to be considered in the mechanical design process. Against this general background — as an example — the paper focusses on the low cycle fatigue behavior of a main steam shut off valve. The first design check based on standard design rules and linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) identifies fatigue sensitive locations and potentially high fatigue usage. This will often occur in the context of flexible operational modes of combined cycle power plants which are a characteristic of the current demands of energy supply. In such a case a margin analysis constitutes a logical second step. It may comprise the identification of a more realistic description of the real operational loads and load-time histories and a refinement of the (creep-) fatigue assessment methods. This constitutes the basis of an advanced component design and assessment. In this work, nonlinear FEA is applied based on a nonlinear kinematic constitutive material model, in order to simulate the thermo-mechanical behavior of the high-Cr steel component mentioned above. The required material parameters are identified based on data of the accessible reference literature and data from an own test series. The accompanying testing campaign was successfully concluded by a series of uniaxial thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) tests simulating the most critical load case of the component. This detailed and hybrid approach proved to be appropriate for ensuring the required lifetime period of the component.

The objective of this study is to examine the feasibility of the X-ray diffraction method for the fatigue life assessment of high-temperature steel pipes used for main steam pipelines, re-heater pipelines and headers etc. in power plants. In this study, X-ray diffraction tests were performed on the specimens simulated for low cycle fatigue damage, in order to estimate fatigue properties at the various stages of fatigue life. As a result of X-ray diffraction tests, it was confirmed that the full width at the half maximum (FWHM) decreased with an increase in the fatigue life ratio, and that the FWHM and the residual stress due to fatigue damage were algebraically linearly related to the fatigue life ratio. From this relationship, a direct assessment of the remaining fatigue life was feasible.

A structural test and evaluation on creep-fatigue damage, and creep-fatigue crack initiation have been carried out for a Mod. 9Cr-1Mo steel structural specimen with weldments. The conservatisms of the design codes of ASME Section III subsection and NH and RCC-MR codes were quantified at the welded joints of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel and 316L stainless steel with the observed images from the structural test. In creep damage evaluation using the RCC-MR code, isochronous curve has been used rather than directly using the creep law as the RCC-MR specifies. A y-shaped steel specimen of a diameter 500mm, height 440mm and thickness 6.35mm is subjected to creep-fatigue loads with two hours of a hold time at 600°C and a primary nominal stress of 30MPa. The defect assessment procedures of RCC-MR A16 guide do not provide a procedure for Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel yet. In this study application of σd method for the assessment of creep-fatigue crack initiation has been examined for a Mod. 9Cr-1Mo steel structure.
