Desulphurization gypsum-slag composite binder is a hydraulic composite binding material made by slag, desulphurization generated by coal-fired power plant flue gas desulphurization, activator and other materials. In order to study the effect of curing system on the composite binder, steam curing, autoclave curing, nature curing, standard curing and water curing were selected. The mechanical properties of desulphurization gypsum-slag composite binder were compared, and the best curing system for strength development was proposed.

The properties of flue gas desulphurization (FGD) gypsum were analysized by Thermo-gravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC), technical performance analysis, optical microscope and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mechanical properties of FGD gypsum-steel slag powder cementitious material were researched. The results revealed that FGD gypsum have similar moisture content, major component CaSO4·2H2O with natural gypsum, and has better technical performance than natural gypsum. The results of optical microscope and SEM of the FGD gypsum hydration support this further. When the dosage of steel slag powder is 15%, containing activator ,better mechanical properties can be obtained. Key words: FGD gypsum, Property, Cementitious material

Fly ash (FA) and flue gas desulphurization gypsum (FGD) were blended in proportion into a new composite binder added with cement, lime and some modifiers. In the paper, the mix proportions of composite binder with low-quality FA and FGD were studied. FA-FGD more than 80% with FA:FGD 3:2 was suggested for mortar, plastering and slurry while FA:FGD 2:1 and FA-FGD 30~40% was recommended for middle-strength concrete. Hydration process of typical mixtures of FA-FGD paste was investigated through SEM and XRD tests. The conclusion could be made that FA showed much improved pozzolana activity especially at early ages due to the existence of FGD as an ideal sulfate activator, which also crystallized later to strengthen the hardened paste. The microstructure of hydrated FA-FGD paste was more excellent than that of neat cement stone or one blended with the same percentage of pure FA.

FA-FGD mortar and concrete were manufactured and tested the main performances. With WFA-FGD taking 80~85% of the total composite binder by mass, mortar used in buildings was provided with good workability, enough mechanical properties specified for masonry in China, low drying shrinkage and strong sulfate corrosion, which was suitable for plastering or coating inside and outside walls. With LFA-FGD more than 30% in proportion, middle-strength concrete showed satisfactory workability with no segregation, no bleeding and low slump loss, stable strength development and low brittleness, about 60% of the domestic standard limit of wear mass loss in the specified test, good impermeability as well as excellent cracking resistance.

Taking the initial design value for target power plant as standard index values, two comprehensive benefit index systems for flue gas desulphurization (FGD) technology were formed by mean square difference method with or without the index of earning of by-product, to analyze the environmental benefit, economic benefit, technology benefit and comprehensive benefit of six flue gas desulphurization technologies on designed power plant and obtained the optimal technology ultimately. For the index system with index of earning of by-product, the optimal FGD technology is wet ammonia desulphurization, not only possesses the biggest comprehensive benefit, but also the biggest economical and technology benefit for designed power plant. For the index system without the index of earning of by-product, the wet ammonia desulphurization, limestone wet desulfurization and simple wet desulfurization have similar comprehensive benefits, but individual advantage on environmental, economic and technology benefit separately.

The Crystal Transformation of flue gas desulphurization (FGD) gypsum was analyzed by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). FGD gypsum was used as cement setting retarder and the influences on the properties of cement were studied by treating FGD gypsum at different heat treatment processes. The results reveal that in the case of adding the same amount, the setting time of cement shortened with the increasing of heat treatment temperature of FGD gypsum. The influence of different heat treatment processes on the strength of cements was not obvious and the strength development was good. The water consumption of normal consistency for cements changed slightly. Stability was qualified.

This paper introduces the phenomenon of stack rainout in the wet flue gas desulphurization system for the thermal power plant units without GGH,analyzes the factors affecting rainout of wet stack and finds out the main causes resulting in stack rainout of wet flue gas desulphurization for Wangtan Power Plant without GGH,such as low temperature after the flue gas desulfurizationinsufficient diffusion capability of flue gas flowthe blockage of mist eliminatorpoor operation of electrostatic precipitatorinadequate combustion of boilerhigh speed of flue gas flow in the stackthe effect of climate. Also it is analyzed that the mist eliminator equipment and ensuring the efficient operation of electrostatic precipitator may relieve the phenomenon of stack rainout.
