This subject is proposed via authentic market investigation, based on the sharp increase of household garbage in urban cities and urgent demand for environmental amelioration in recent years. Taking horizontal refuse compactor as an example, this paper optimizes the configuration of key components of refuse compactors, by employing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method, aiming to select the most appropriate components to equip compactors, whose operation efficiency can be markedly enhanced. The statics analysis for each key component is individually conducted by applying ABAQUS, the FEA simulation software, to test the reliability of this new structure.

This research investigated the lattice structure fabricated using corn husk fibre reinforced recycled polystyrene composite using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The material’s properties of this composite material were obtained from previous study. Then, the lattice structure of lattice structure was created using Creo® software and the FEA simulation was done by ANSYS software. In this study, the lattice structures were created using triangular prism and hexagonal prism. The analysis was divided into two conditions: 1) lattice structure with different prism shape and similar surface area, 2) lattice structure with varies of strut thickness and 3) lattice structure with different prism shape and similar lattice parameter. The results show the lattice structure with triangular prism have more structural integrity than hexagonal prism. Then, lattice structure with triangular prism can be built with lesser material but stronger and stiffer than lattice structure with hexagonal prism.

Energy efficiency and leakage magnetic field (LMF) are two important issues in inductive chargers. In this work, the maximum achievable coil efficiency and the corresponding LMF strength are formulated as functions of system parameters, and figure of merits (FOM) are proposed for assessing the efficiency and LMF performance of the coil assemblies. The target application is electric vehicle inductive chargers where the LMF is suppressed via passive shielding. The impact of the coil assembly’s geometric parameters on both FOMs is examined through a combination of finite element analysis (FEA) simulation and magnetic circuit analysis, and measures to improve the FOMs are studied Optimization of an exemplary coil assembly within given dimensional limits is conducted and the performance improvement is verified by FEA simulation results. <br>

The proposed finite element analysis (FEA) model was constructed using FEA simulation software, ANSYS program, for determining effects of corrosion fatigue (CF) from TIG welding process on AISI 304 stainless steel workpiece. The FEA model of TIG welding process was developed from Goldak's double ellipsoid moving heat source. In this paper, the residual stress results obtained from the FEA model were consistent with results from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The residual stress was further used as an input in the next step of corrosion fatigue analysis. The predictive CF life result obtained from the FEA CF model were consistent with the value obtained from stress-life curve (S-N curve) from the reference literaturature. Therefore, the proposed FEA of CF model was then used for predicting the corrosion fatigue life on TIG welding workpiece, the results from the model showed the corrosion fatigue life of 1,794 cycles with testing condition of the frequency ( f ) = 0.1 Hz and the equivalent load of 67.5 kN (equal to 150 MPa) with R = 0.25.

The vice frame bears and transfers the forces and loads between the bogie and the vehicle body. The strength of the vice frame relates directly to the stability and smoothness of the vehicle. In this study, finite element analysis is utilized first to analyse the structural strength and fatigue life of the vice frame, and the recognize the weak parts of its structure in order to enhance its structural strength in the following design work. The finite element analysis is performed on a simulation software Ansys. Then an experiment is designed to test the fatigue strength of the vice frame. The experimental result indicates that the fatigue strength of the object corresponds to the standards and the finite element analysis has high feasibility in solving this kind of problem.

In view of large load, the shape of large crank forgings and forging process are designed reasonably. Large crank forging process is simulated by numerical simulation software DEFORM-3D to improve the forging process and the dies, including adding upsetting step and related dies. The result shows that improved process and dies can obtain higher quality finish forgings and the load reduces to a rational level, which provides basis for crank forging process and die design.

Visual inspections of selected semitrailers during routine equipment checks revealed that the kingpin bent in the direction of 180 degrees from the direction that the semitrailer is towed. Confirmation from semitrailer repair facilities found that in some cases the semitrailer’s supporting structure developed unexpected cracks. These cracks were not thought to be age related but were most likely caused by high stresses from unknown high loads. In an effort to determine the forces at the kingpin and fifthwheel, TruckSim® modeling and simulation software was utilized to predict the forces in all three directions during various operating maneuvers. Computer simulations suggest the largest forces are experienced during coupling operations as opposed to severe maneuvering or braking. The development of a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model of the tractor-semitrailer coupling determined that high coupling speeds would overload the kingpin-fifthwheel structure. The FEA model also allowed researchers to determine that a damping system would lower the forces at the kingpin-fifthwheel interface to the magnitude of forces experienced during normal operations. A literature search found no valid documented tests, and determined the SAE J133 kingpin loading requirements were incorrect.

An ASME Class 300 NPS12 flange connection between a control valve and a pipe has been evaluated at a temperature of 1100° F with testing and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The goal of the testing was to validate the FEA simulation. The valve side of the test sample was a cast structure, the pipe side was a forged flange butt welded to a pipe section, and the gasket was a Thermiculite filled spiral wound gasket. The valve, flange, and piping material are SA-217, SA-182, and SA-335 (2 ¼ Cr – 1 Mo) steel respectively. The bolt length and flange geometry was measured before and after loading the bolts, and before and after heating the sample in order to measure changes in the bolt load and flange rotation which would indicate creep/relaxation in the joint. Tests were run with two types of bolts, B16 (SA-193) and 718 (SB-637), and also with two gasket arrangements, no gasket and then a spiral wound gasket. The results of the completed test and the correlation to an FEA analysis will be presented.

In reality, nanoindentation test is an efficient technique for probing the mechanical properties of biological tissue that soaked in the liquid media to keep the bioactivity. However, the effects of flotage imposed on the indenter will lead to inaccuracy when calculating mechanical properties (for instance, elastic modulus and hardness) by using depth-sensing nanoindentation. In this paper, the effects of flotage on the nanoindentation results of cortical bone were investigated by finite element analysis (FEA) simulation. Comparisons of nanoindentation simulation results of bone samples with and without being soaked in the liquid media were carried out. Conclusions show that the difference of load-displacement curves in the case of soaking sample and without soaking sample conditions varies widely based on the change of indentation depth. In other words, the nanoindentation measurements in liquid media will cause significant error in the calculated Young’s modules and hardness due to the flotage. By taking into account the effect of flotage, these errors are particularly important to the accurate biomechanics characterization of biological samples.

Lattice structure design widely applicable for 3D printed components. This research investigated the lattice structure with different shape and relative density using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation. The material used for the lattice structure was the recycled polystyrene made from post-used Styrofoam. The research assessed the mechanical behaviour of lattice structure with either triangular prism and square prism with FEA simulation and numerical mathematical modelling, such as stiffness to-mass ratio, maximum von Misses stress and effective Young’s modulus. The finding FEA shows a good agreement with result from numerical mathematic modelling. The FEA results show lattice structure with triangular prism exhibited lowest value of maximum von Misses stress with maximum stiffness-to-mass value compared to lattice structure square prism. The finding from this work provided an early prediction on mechanical properties of lattice structure fabricated from recycled polystyrene.
