In situ metal matrix composites are novel composites in which the reinforcement is formed within the parent alloy by controlling chemical reactions during the composite fabrication. In recent years, there have been attempts to produce AlN composites utilizing the reactions between molten Al and a reactive gas. However, the conventional processing methods are sub-optimal and result in porosity, interface matrix-reinforcement deterioration, and high processing costs. The aim of this research is to develop a methodology to manufacture good-quality in situ Al-AlN composites in a cost effective way. In situ Al-AlN composite was synthesized with a laser cladding equipment. This composite powder can be directly deposited as coating on aluminum alloys conventionally used in the transport sector. The increase in the coatings tribological properties was demonstrated.

In this paper characteristics of an AlMg/AlN composite produced in-situ and processed in a flowing N2 atmosphere is investigated. Some critical parameters such as the manufacturing process temperature, the percentage of the magnesium consumed, the flowing reactive gas flow and the time for completing the manufacturing are considered as variables for the parametric investigation. Moreover, the effect of different amount of Mg employed has been also investigated, since Mg acts as a catalyst at the surface both for the gas/liquid and solid/liquid systems. Traditional methods were used for the basic characterization of the composite. The microstructure of the composite was investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy (OM, SEM). SEM analysis was performed in order to observe the microstructural evolution as a function of the Mg content and to identify some reasons of the presence of porosity or any irregularities within the metal matrix. The evolution of mechanical properties, in terms of microhardness, at different percentage of Mg were monitored. By EDS technique the distribution of the elements was obtained. Furthermore, employing an optimization process, uniform dispersion of the strengthening (AlN) particles in the metal matrix with homogeneous properties along the composite material is obtained. Based on the aforementioned statements, it can be concluded that the reactions between Al, Mg and the N2 atmosphere induce spontaneous infiltration in the metal matrix. The complete mix of properties and experimentally assessed parameters can be used for industrial purpose manufacturing design and development.

In situ reaction synthesized TiB reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated using rapid non-equilibrium synthesis techniques of laser cladding. Titanium matrix composite were laser cladding treated on Ti-6Al-4V using Ti and B powder mixture, and the designed weight fractions of B were 10 wt.% in the starting powder mixture. The composite coating mainly consists of α-Ti and TiB. The reinforcement TiB is dispersed homogeneously in the composite coating with pre-placed powder thickness of 0.5mm. The influence of pre-placed powder thickness on microstructure of laser cladding coatings was discussed.

The in-situ synthesis of ceramic particles in Al-matrix composites gives an uniform and homogeneous microstructure. The matrix reinforcement interface is compatible with the matrix, interface is clean and provides good interface bonding. The evenly distributed sub micron sized reinforcement particles in Al-matrix enhances the strength and toughness of the composite. The formation of particle clusters and agglomerations are minimized or eliminated by suitably choosing the in-situ process parameters. Large particles and agglomerate are easily fractured where as evenly distributed fine particles are resistant to crack propagation and improves the strength of the composites. The problem encountered with the formation of secondary intermetallic Al3Ti and Al4C3 phases are addressed.

In situ reaction synthesized TiB reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated using rapid non-equilibrium synthesis techniques of laser cladding. TiB/Ti composite coating was treated on Ti-6Al-4V surface using Ti and B powder mixture by laser cladding. Microstructure and dry sliding wear behavior of the in situ synthesized TiB/Ti composite coatings were investigated by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), hardness tester and friction and wear tester. The composite coatings consist of Ti, TiB and intermetallic compounds. The TiB reinforcement dispersed homogeneously in the composite coatings. The wear tests show that the friction coefficient and wear weight loss ratio of the coatings is lower than that of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The composite coating was reinforced by the in situ synthesized TiB ceramic particles. Based on the SEM observation, effects of scan speed on hardness and wear resistance of the laser cladding coatings were investigated and discussed.

The present paper describes a cost effective route to produce Al alloy-10 wt % TiB2 metal matrix composites by in-situ molten flux assisted reaction synthesis. Now a days main focus is given to aluminium alloy as a matrix material due to its unique combination of good corrosion resistance, low density, superior mechanical properties, good vibration damping, higher wear resistance due to which alloy finds extensive applications in naval applications. With TiB2 as particulate addition in Al-Alloy (Al-5Mg) matrix properties of alloy can greatly be improved.

Intermetallic matrix composites reinforced with ceramic particles have received a great deal of attention. Iron aluminide is known to be a good material for the matrix in such composites. Two processes were used to fabricate FeAl - TiB 2 intermetallic matrix composites. One was liquid melt in-situ mixing, and the other was arc melting and suction casting processes. FeAl - TiB 2 IMCs obtained by two different methods were investigated to elucidate the influence of TiB 2 content. In both methods, the grain size in the FeAl alloy decreased with the presence of titanium diboride. The grain size of in-situ FeAl - TiB 2 IMCs became smaller than that of arc FeAl - TiB 2 IMCs. Significant increase in fracture stress and hardness was achieved in the composites. The in-situ process gives clean, contamination-free matrix/reinforcement interface which maintained good bonding causing high load bearing capability. This contributed to the increase in the mechanical properties of composites.
