The availability of TiC healing agent has been evaluated in low temperature self-healing behavior of Al2O3 based self-healing ceramics. For this purpose, some technical issues to actualize the advanced fiber-reinforced self-healing ceramics containing TiC based interlayer as healing agent were discussed. Especially, the mechanical matching between the matrix and the interlayer was focused. Moreover, the self-healing behavior of the advanced shFRC containing the optimized TiC based healing agent was investigated. As a result, 30 vol% TiC-70 vol% Al2O3 interlayer was confirmed to be the optimized healing agent in the self-healing ceramics, and the self-healing ceramics was found to enable to attain the perfect healing at 600°C within 10 min. And we succeeded in prototype production of fiber-reinforced self-healing ceramics for low pressure turbine blade.

Abstract Self-healing is a promising way to solve the difficulty in wind turbine blades repair, yet the embedded healing agent may have a disadvantage because of being exposed to outdoor for a long time. Pressurized delivery of the healing agent in real-time when the blade is damaged may be the solution to avoid the disadvantage healing agent. In this paper, the healing agent was pumped to the damaged area by a peristaltic pump, and the healing effect was evaluated by the recovery rate of the residual flexural strength after impact and the image of ultrasonic C-scan. To evaluate the healing effect of different damage degrees, 10 J, 15 J, 20 J, and 25 J impact energies were applied. The fluid tracer test showed that the healing agent could penetrate in the damaged areas after the impact of 15 J, 20 J and 25 J, while the three-point bending test revealed that the healing efficiency was the highest with 20 J (85.2%). The ultrasonic C-scan and optical photos of the sample showed that the images of the healing area were almost consistent with those of the un-impacted area, indicating that the damaged area is healed well. Based on the success of plate samples, the self-healing of the wind turbine blade-scale prototype was then carried out. Twenty-joule impact was exerted on the blade prototype, and the healing agent was pumped to the damaged area using the peristaltic pump similar to the same procedure as that of the plate specimen. Ultrasonic C-scan and optical images of the damaged area showed that the prototype was healed well in comparison with those of the plate specimens, indicating that the application of pressurized delivery of the healing agent system in the self-healing of wind turbine blade prototype was successful.

Carbon fiber reinforced composites have been used in a wide range of applications in aerospace, mechanical, and civil structures. Due to the nature of material, multiple types of structural damage including micro matrix cracks and delaminations can significant degrade the integrity and safety of composites. It is difficult to detect and repair such damage since they are always barely visible to the naked eye. This paper presents the development of self-sensing and self-healing functions in order to detect damage progression and conduct in-situ damage repair in composite structures. Carbon nanotubes, which are highly conductive materials, are uniformly distributed within epoxy to develop the self-sensing capability. Shape memory polymer is used in the hot spot to obtain the self-healing capability. The developed multi-functional material is applied to carbon fiber reinforced composites for the autonomic detection and heal the matrix cracking. Experimental results showed that the developed composite materials are capable of detecting and healing the matrix cracks and delaminations. The developed self-healing material has the potential to be used as a novel structural material in mechanical, civil, aerospace applications. It can be used to detect and in-situ repair matrix damage induced by low velocity impacts and fatigues.

The cementitious composites with microencapsulated healing agents have become a class of hotspots in the field of construction materials, and they have very broad application prospects and research values. The in-depth study on multi-scale mechanical behaviors of microencapsulated self-healing cementitious composites is critical to quantitatively account for the mechanical response during the damage-healing process. This paper proposes a three-dimensional evolutionary micromechanical model to quantitatively explain the self-healing effects of microencapsulated healing agents on the damage induced by microcracks. By virtue of the proposed 3 D micromechanical model, the evolutionary domains of microcrack growth (DMG) and corresponding compliances of the initial, extended and repaired phases are obtained. Moreover, the elaborate studies are conducted to inspect the effects of various system parameters involving the healing efficiency, fracture toughness and preloading-induced damage degrees on the compliances and stress-strain relations. The results indicate that relatively significant healing efficiency, preloading-induced damage degree and the fracture toughness of polymerized healing agent with the matrix will lead to a higher compressive strength and stiffness. However, the specimen will break owing to the nucleated microcracks rather than the repaired kinked microcracks. Further, excessive higher values of healing efficiency, preloading-induced damage degree and the fracture toughness of polymerized healing agent with the matrix will not affect the compressive strength of the cementitious composites. Therefore, a stronger matrix is required. To achieve the desired healing effects, the specific parameters of both the matrix and microcapsules should be selected prudently.

By designing the different formulations of the composites and adopting optimized technology including extrusion and molding, the effects of the Micro-capsules on the properties of nylon composites are analyzed by the impact property test. The mechanical impact property of the glass fiber reinforced nylon composites is influenced little if the content of the self-healing microcapsules added is less than 3.5%, and the technology of self-healing microcapsules used in the polymer composite gear is feasible.

: Self-healing coatings are intended to increase long-term durability and reliability and can be enabled by the presence of microcapsules containing a self-healing agent capable of interacting with the matrix and regenerating the system. This review article provides an overview of the state-of-the-art, focusing on the patents published in the field of microcapsule-based self-healing organic coatings, since the early 2000’s. A discussion about coatings for corrosion protection and the different self-healing approaches and mechanisms are also addressed, as well as future challenges and expectations for this kind of coatings.

Wear occurs at most solid surfaces that come in contact with other solid surfaces. While biological surfaces and tissues usually have the ability for self-healing, engineered self-healing materials only started to emerge recently. An example of a smart self-healing material is the materials with embedded microcapsules, which rupture during crack propagation and release a healing agent that repairs the crack. We discuss the conditions under which the self-healing occurs and provide a general theoretical framework and criteria for self-healing using the concept of multiscale organization of entropy and non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
