Friction happens everywhere. Abrasives generated in tribological process will result in secondary wear. Abrasive wear is a kind of rather common but harmful wear, which is the main reason for the damage of fifty-percent mechanical components by friction. Surface texturing is an effective method to improve the tribological and lubricating performance of tribo-pairs. In this paper, with different-size diamond particles added into the lubricant and a surface of the tribo-pairs textured by different parameters (diameter and depth) with femtosecond laser, the relationship between the surface texture and the abrasive wear was researched, and the influence of the texture on the abrasive wear was analyzed. The friction experiments were carried out on UMT3. The microstructures were tested and analyzed by SEM, microscope and White Light Interferometer respectively. The experimental results showed that the size of the surface texture, compared with that of abrasives, is the main factor which determines the friction coefficient. As the size of the surface texture is much bigger than that of the abrasives, the texture can accommodate the abrasives efficiently, and thus the friction coefficient is reduced efficiently.

This paper experimentally studies the relationship between the friction surface of a false-twisting unit and the quality of cotton yarns produced by a modified ring spinning system, with the adoption of the single friction-belt false-twister. The friction surface of the false-twisting unit, as a key twisting component, has been studied in terms of material, surface roughness, hardness and diameter, as well as the interaction between these factors and resultant yarn properties, with particular attention to yarn imperfections. Experimental results showed that the false-twisting unit with a short interactive path demonstrated significant reduction of yarn imperfections, especially yarn neps. With the optimal false-twisting unit, performances of the modified yarns and their knitted fabrics were evaluated and compared with the conventional ones.

PurposeSurface texturing has emerged in the past two decades as a viable option of surface engineering, resulting in significant improvement in wear resistance and friction coefficient. The purpose of this study is to find the appropriate surface texture to reduce vibration and improve the stability of journal bearings.Design/methodology/approachMicro-dimples, evenly distributed in a square array, were selected as the texture pattern and formed on the lower surface of bush by the laser surface texturing technique. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of micro-dimples under different depths, densities and distributions.FindingsThe results are summarized in the form of shaft center orbits, waterfall illustrations and Hilbert-Huang transforms. In the entire test, it was found that an optimum geometric and distributive range of micro-dimples exists, where vibration acceleration can be decreased at least 3dB and stability can be greatly improved.Originality/valueA majority of researchers devoted to studying on static characteristics, such as friction coefficient, load carrying capacity, pressure distribution and cavitation model. Besides, the influence of surface texture on stability of rotor-journal bearing system was rarely investigated and the recent examples can be found in Refs. (Ausas et al. 2007). However, a complete study of textured journal bearings has not been undertaken in the dynamic properties. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to experimentally investigate the comprehensive effects of density, depth and distribution of micro-dimples on bearing vibration and stability.

Surface texturing is a widely used method to improve the tribological performance of the mechanical systems. To introduce the surface texture into the mechanical components, this study experimentally examined the frictional behaviors of grease lubricated spherical plain bearings under mixed lubrication conditions on an electro-hydraulic servo tribological test rig. The effects of the surface texture parameters and roughness parameters on the frictional properties of bearings were investigated. The results showed that higher dimple depths and lower dimple densities would result in a distinct improvement on the friction coefficients. A maximum reduction of 55% was gained for the textured sample under running conditions compared with the untextured one. In addition, the surface roughness parameters also influence the frictional behaviors. In the high load conditions, the friction coefficient decreases while the Ssk value gets more negative, even though the Sa value is much higher. On the other hand, in the low load conditions, when the value of Ssk varies between −5 and −1, the influence of the value of Sa on the friction coefficient becomes obvious, a higher Sa value results in a higher friction coefficient.

This study deals with fretting wear behavior of 40CrNiMoA steel on a SRVⅣoscillating friction and wear tester. The results indicate that with the frequency and load increasing, both the friction coefficient and fretting wear volume increase. With the amplitude increasing, the fretting wear volume increased too, but the effect of amplitude on friction coefficient was not simple positive correlation according to the experimental results. Meanwhile, the fretting wear mechanism is directly related to test frequency, load and amplitude. When they are small, the main fretting wear mechanism is abrasive wear, with these test parameters increasing, the main fretting wear mechanism turns to a combination of abrasive wear and adhesion wear. Based on the experimental results, the anti-fretting wear measures of steel worm gear pairs used in mechanical tracked regulator of tracked vehicle are discussed.

Abstract This paper established a mathematical model of hydrodynamic lubrication through theoretical analysis, solved the key variables of the mathematical model through simulation and validated the mathematical model using the experimental results. The purpose is to summarize a set of surface texture theory and optimal selection equations for complex working conditions. After comparing the experimental results with the results obtained by the mathematical model, it is found that the two are basically the same in the ranking of the anti-friction properties of different textures, and there is an error of 10%-40% in the friction coefficient value.

Abstract Tribological properties such as lubrication, friction and wear resistance are important to improve machine operating efficiency, machine performances and machine life. To improve tribological properties of sliding surface, scraping is available. Scraping fabricates many small depression on target surface evenly, the depression will function oil hole which promote lubrication of flat bearing surface. Many researchers have reported the surface texturing method which aim is similar to scraping. For example, the techniques fast tool servo turning with diamond insert tool and turn mill processing by dual spindle turning center were reported to fabricate periodically micro dimple. However, these techniques employ expensive high precision machine tools. This paper introduces a more cheaply and rapidly surface texturing technique which employs ultrasonic vibration turning to obtain low friction surface and improve tribological properties. In ultrasonic turning, cutting tool tip is vibrated in principal direction and radial direction simultaneously origin from poisons deformation of ultrasonic transducer. The radial direction tool vibration functions to squeeze workpiece surface in workpiece radial direction periodically, textured surface will be obtained. The results of ultrasonic turning experiments, textured surfaces were obtained. In order to evaluate the tribological performance of the turned surface, friction coefficient between stainless steel pin and turned surface were measured under oil dipping condition. It was confirmed that friction coefficient of ultrasonic turned surface is drastically reduced compared with ordinary turned surface. And proposed technique is available to perform surface texturing for several materials.

How does disease threat influence sexual attitudes and behaviors? Although research on the influence of disease threat on social behavior has grown considerably, the relationship between perceived disease threat and sexual attitudes remains unclear. The current preregistered study (analyzed N = 510), investigated how experimental reminders of disease threat influence attitudes and anticipated future behaviors pertaining to short-term sexual relationships, using an ecologically valid disease prime. The central preregistered prediction was that experimental manipulation of disease threat would lead to less favorable attitudes and inclinations toward sexual promiscuity. Results were consistent with this preregistered prediction, relative to both a neutral control condition and a non-disease threat condition. These experimental results were buttressed by the finding that dispositional variation in worry about disease threat predicted less favorable attitudes and inclinations toward short-term sexual relationships. This study represents the first preregistered investigation of the implications of acute disease threat for sexual attitudes.
