A New Deformation Mechanism in Nanoscale Fe-C Composite as a Result of a Stress-Induced α→γ Transformation

Recent studies of nanocrystalline materials have often found that the deformation mechanisms are radically different to those in coarse-grained materials, resulting in quite different mechanical properties for such materials. The use of pearlitic steels for the study of the deformation mechanisms in bcc materials with ultrafine grain sizes is quite convenient, because it is relatively straightforward to obtain a homogenous nanocrystalline structure with a mean grain size as small as 10 nm using various modes of severe plastic deformation (SPD). In this paper we show that highpressure torsion of an initially pearlitic steel results in a nanostructured steel in which austenite has been formed at or close to room temperature. The orientation relationship between neighboring ferrite and austenite grains is the well-known Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship, i.e. the same observed in temperature-induced martensitic transformation of iron and steels. It is shown that this must have resulted from a reverse martensitic transformation promoted by the high shear strains experienced by the material during severe plastic deformation of the nanocrystalline structure. This transformation represents an alternative deformation mechanism that can be activated when conventional deformation mechanisms such as slip of lattice dislocations become exhausted.

Long-range ordered intermetallic alloys with L12 (Ni3Al, Cu3Au) and B2 (FeAl) structures were deformed by high-pressure torsion at room temperature up to high grades of deformation. Transmission electron microscopy shows that disordering caused by the deformation occurs on a very local scale within coarse grains along glide planes (Cu3Au, Ni3Al) and in the form of well defined local regions (Ni3Al, FeAl). The latter leads to a duplex structure consisting of an ordered coarse-grained structure and a disordered nanocrystalline structure. The different mechanisms that can lead to disordering during severe plastic deformation are discussed on the basis of the different ordering energies and on the basis of antiphase boundaries associated with gliding dislocations. The results indicate that in intermetallic alloys the formation of a nanocrystalline structure by severe plastic deformation is facilitated by the loss of order.

The effects of severe plastic deformation (SPD) by isothermal rolling at the temperature of liquid nitrogen combined with prior- and post-SPD heat treatment, on microstructure and hardness of Al-4.4%Cu-1.4%Mg-0.7%Mn (D16) alloy were investigated. It was found no nanostructuring even after straining to 75%. Сryodeformation leads to microshear banding and processing the high-density dislocation substructures with a cell size of ~ 100-200 nm. Such a structure remains almost stable under 1 hr annealing up to 200oC and with further temperature increase initially transforms to bimodal with a small fraction of nanograins and then to uniform coarse grained one. It is found the change in the alloy post–SPD aging response leading to more active decomposition of the preliminary supersaturated aluminum solid solution, and to the alloy extra hardening under aging with shorter times and at lower temperatures compared to T6 temper.

An aged Al-5Zn-1.6Mg alloy with fine η' precipitates was grain refined to ~100 nm grain size by severe plastic deformation (SPD). Microstructure evolution during SPD and mechanical behaviour after SPD of the alloy were characterized by electron microscopy and tensile, compression as well as nanoindentation tests. The influence of η' precipitates on microstructure and mechanical properties of ultrafine grained Al-Zn-Mg alloy is discussed with respect to their effect on dislocation configurations and deformation mechanisms during processing of the alloy.

The technique of severe plastic deformation (SPD) enables one to produce metals and alloys with an ultrafine grain size of about 100 nm and less. As the mechanical properties of such ultrafine grained materials are governed by the plastic deformation during the SPD process, the understanding of the stress and strain development in a workpiece is very important for optimizing the SPD process design and for microstructural control. The objectives of this work is to present a constitutive model based on the dislocation density and dislocation cell evolution for large plastic strains as applied to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). This paper briefly introduces the constitutive model and presents the results obtained with this model for ECAP by the finite element method.

A study was carried out on aging behaviour of a 6082 alloy processed by two different severe plastic deformation techniques: ECAP and asymmetric rolling. Both techniques were able to generate an ultrafine-grained structure in samples processed at room temperature. It was stated that severe straining promotes marked changes in the postdeformation aging kinetics. The peaks of β′′/β′ transition phases were anticipated and of progressively reduced intensity over the coarse grained alloy. A further peak accounting for onset of recrystallization also appeared in the most severely deformed samples. Full consistency in peak shape and position was found when comparing materials processed by ECAP and asymmetric rolling. Isothermal aging treatments performed at 180°C revealed that in the severely deformed samples, aging became so fast that the hardness curves continuously decreased due to overwhelming effects of structure restoration. On the contrary, aging at 130°C offers good opportunities for fully exploiting the precipitate hardening effects in the ultrafine-grained alloy.

In contrast to the elastic deformation, which is reversible, usually neglected by field geologists but important for geophysicists working in seismology, ductile deformation is irreversible. This chapter is restricted to solid materials. Materials containing a melt fraction will be examined in Chapter 7. In the geological literature, ‘ductile’ is often used as a synonym for ‘plastic’. The latter is rather used, and will be used to specify deformation mechanisms that dominantly involve the action of dislocations. In contrast to brittle deformation, which by essence is discontinuous and highly localized (see Chapter 3), ductile deformation is generally continuous and affects large volumes of rock. However, ductile deformation may be concentrated into restricted rock volumes (or domains). Such localization is common in shear zones and/or when superplastic deformation mechanism is involved. Plastic deformation mechanisms naturally depend on temperature, magnitude of the applied stress, mineral nature and grain-size of the rocks. In upper parts of the crust, fluids are able to carry chemical elements over large distances and influence the deformation mechanisms. Micrographs of several microstructural types as well as deformation maps for olivine and calcite are given at the end of this chapter.
