Shot peening is a surface treatment and improves the performance of engineering components. More recently, a new type of microshot has been developed to enhance peening effect. In the present study, the influence of microshot peening on the surface layer characteristics of cold tool steel was investigated. In the experiment, the microshot peening apparatus with a heating furnace was produced experimentally. The projective method of the microshot was a compressed air type. The peening microshots of 0.1mm diameter were cemented carbide and the workpiece was commercially cold tool steel SKD11. Surface roughness, compressive residual stress, and hardness in the peened workpiece were measured. The effect of microshot peening on the fatigue strength of cold tool steel was also examined. The use of hard microshot such as cemented carbide was found to cause a significantly enhanced peening effect for cold tool steel.

Shot peening is a surface treatment that improves the performance of engineering components. In conventional shot peening, the medium consists of small spheres, which are usually made of high-carbon cast steel; the diameter of the spheres is in the range from 0.3 to 1.2mm. More recently, however, a new type of microshot has been developed to enhance the peening effect. The diameter of the spheres in the new medium is in the range from 0.02 to 0.15mm. In the present study, the effect of microshot peening on the surface characteristics of spring steel was investigated. The injection method of the microshot was of the compressed air type. The microshots of 0.1mm diameter were high-carbon cast steel and cemented carbide, and the workpiece used was the commercially spring steel JIS-SUP10. The surface roughness, hardness and compressive residual stress of the peened workpieces were measured. The surface layer of the workpieces was sufficiently deformed by microshot peening. A high hardness or residual stress was observed near the surface. The use of hard microshots such as cemented carbide was found to cause a significantly enhanced peening effect for spring steel.

This research paper describes a technique for the enhancement of the fatigue strength of the chain link plate in the drive system of a military armoured vehicle. SAE 1541 steel link plates of chains were subjected to cyclical tensile stress due to repeated loading and un-loading conditions. The crack was getting originated from the pitch hole and growth perpendicular to the chain pulling load, due to fatigue mechanism. In general plate holes are manufactured using the conventional process. An additional novel technique called the slip ball burnishing (SBB) method is applied for improving the hole properties. The improvement is made by producing local plastic deformation, improving surface finish and compressive residual stress throughout in the pierced hole. Both the conventional process (CP) and the SBB technique have been evaluated by optical, profile, surface roughness and micro harness tests. Experimental fatigue test validations were done in both chain samples using the Johnson-Goodman method. SBB chains passed 3x106 cycles at the load of 17.61 kN and CP chains passed 3x106 cycles at the load of 13.92 kN. The conclusion was that SBB made a significant improvement of 26.51 per cent of fatigue strength compared to CP.

Laser peening without protective coating (LPwC) treatment is one of surface enhancement techniques using impact wave of high pressure plasma induced by laser pulse irradiation. One of the effects of the LPwC treatment is expected to reduce the tensile residual stress and to induce the compressive residual stress in the surface layer of metallic materials. As a laser has no reaction force due to irradiation and also it has easy characteristics for remote control, the LPwC treatment is practically used as a technique for preventing the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and for improving the fatigue strength of some structural materials. In this study, high cycle fatigue tests with four-points rotating bending loading were carried out on the non-peened and the LPwC treated low-carbon type austenitic stainless steel 316L in order to investigate the effects of the LPwC treatment on the high cycle fatigue strength and the surface fatigue crack propagation behavior. Two types of specimens were prepared; one was a smooth specimen, the other was a specimen with a pre-crack by the fatigue loading from a small artificial hole. As the results of the LPwC treatment, the high compressive residual stress was induced in the surface layer on the specimens, and the region of the compressive residual stress was about 1mm depth from the surface. The fatigue strength of the LPwC treated SUS316L was remarkably improved during the whole regime of the fatigue life up to the 108 cycles compared with the non-peened materials. Through the fracture mechanics investigation of the pre-cracked materials after the LPwC treatment, it became clear that the fatigue crack propagation was restrained by the LPwC treatment on the pre-cracked region, when the stress intensity factor range ΔK on the crack tip was under the value of 7.6 MPa√m.

Abstract Shot peening is widely used in the aerospace and other industries to increase the damage tolerance of metal parts via producing a thin surface layer of compressive residual stress that prevents crack initiation and retards crack growth during service. Nondestructive evaluation of the prevailing compressive residual stress in the shallow subsurface layer is complicated by the adverse effects of shot peening, such as surface roughness and cold work that manifests itself through increased dislocation density and localized texture. Recent research efforts have revealed that conventional ultrasonic and eddy current NDT methods are simply too sensitive to surface roughness to quantitatively assess the subtle variations in mechanical and electrical properties that are caused by shot peening. On the other hand, noncontacting thermoelectric techniques are very unique among all other methods used in nondestructive materials characterization in that they are solely sensitive to intrinsic material variations regardless of the size, shape, and surface quality of the specimen to be tested. Noncontacting thermoelectric methods, based on magnetic detection of local thermoelectric currents around inhomogeneities in metals when a temperature gradient is established throughout the specimen, are especially well suited for the characterization of shot peened surfaces. Experimental evidence suggests that this method can reliably detect and quantitatively assess otherwise hidden variations in material properties within the shallow surface layer of shot peened specimens. The thermoelectric method is sensitive to all three “material” effects of shot peening, namely residual stress, local texture, and increased dislocation density, but it is entirely insensitive to its “geometrical” by-product, i.e., the rough surface topography. Further development of the thermoelectric method is necessary to study the underlying physical phenomena before it can be successfully adapted to practical inspection problems, but the preliminary results presented in this paper are very promising.

The gradient nanostructured (GNS) layer forms beneath the surface of Zr-4 samples by the surface mechanical grinding treatment (SMGT) process, which increases the fatigue strength apparently due to the synergistic effect of the gradient nanostructured layer and compressive residual stress. The SMGTed Zr-4 samples are subjected to annealing to remove residual stress (A-SMGT) and the individual effect of the GNS layer and compressive residual stress can be clarified. The results show that the gradient nanostructure in the surface is stable after annealing at 400 °C for 2 h but residual stress is apparently removed. Both SMGTed and A-SMGTed Zr-4 samples exhibit higher fatigue strength than that of coarse-grained (CG) Zr-4 alloy. The fatigue fracture of Zr-4 alloy indicates that the hard GNS surface layer hinders fatigue cracks from approaching the surface and leads to a lower fatigue striation space than that of CG Zr-4 samples. The offset fatigue strength of 106 cycles is taken for SMRT-ed, A-SMRT-ed, and CG Zr-4 samples and the results indicate clearly that the GNS surface layer is a key factor for the improvement of fatigue strength of the Zr-4 alloy with surface mechanical grinding treatment.

Because of the general problem of the welding workpiece such as fatigue fracture caused by tensile residual stress lead to initial and propagation crack in the fusion zone. Thus, the mechanical surface treatment of deep rolling on Gas Tungsten Arc Welded (GTAW) surfaces of AISI 316L was studied. Deep rolling (DR) is a cold working process to induce compressive residual stress in the surface layer of the workpiece resulting in hardening deformation which increased surface hardness, and smooth surface that inhibit crack growth and improve fracture strength of materials. The present study focuses on compressive residual stress at the surface of stainless steel AISI 316L butt welded joint of GTAW. The three parameters of DR process were used; pressure 150 bar, rolling speed 400 mm/min, and step over 1.0 mm. The residual stresses analysis by X-ray diffraction with sin2Ψ method at 0, 5, 10, and 20 mm from the center of the welded bead. The results showed that the DR process on the welded of GTAW induce the minimum compressive residual stress-408.6 MPa and maximum-498.1 MPa in longitudinal direction. The results of transverse residual stress in minimum and maximum are 43.7 MPa and-34.8 MPa respectively. The FWHM of DR both longitudinal and transverse direction were increased in the same trend. Furthermore, the microhardness after DR treatment on workpiece surface layer higher than GTAW average 0.4 times.

ABSTRACTThe shot peening process is known to produce a hard layer, known as the white layer” on the surface of coil springs. However, little is known about the fatigue properties of this white-layer.In this study, coil springs with a white-layer were manufactured. The surface of these springs was then examined using micro Vickers hardness, FE-SEM etc. to test fatigue strength of the springs.From the results obtained, a microstructure of the white-layer with grain size of 50–100 nm was observed, with a Vickers hardness rating of 8–10 GPa.Tow category springs were manufactured utilizing a double-peening process. These springs had the same residual stress destruction and surface roughness. Only one difference was observed: one spring had a nanocrystalline layer on the surface, while the other did not. The results of the fatigue test realized an increase in the fatigue life of the nanocrystalline surface layer by 9%.

Abstract As the core component of aero-engine, the service performance of aero-engine blade has an important influence on the engine’s reliability and safety performance. Existing studies have shown that machined surface characteristics affect the fatigue strength of components. However, current studies are all based on regular fatigue samples. The structure of blades different from fatigue samples, and the influence mechanism of structural differences on the service performance of blades is still unclear. In addition, the conventional fatigue test conditions are not representative for the blades’ actual service conditions, so it is difficult to realize the processing process for the service performance optimization. In this study, the aero-engine blades processed by abrasive belt grinding and the vibration fatigue test bench were used to explore the influence of surface roughness, surface texture, and surface residual stress on the fatigue performance of aero-engine blades under actual working conditions. The aero-engine blades were ground with different process parameters to obtain different single-factor surface characteristics. By comparing the vibration fatigue life of blades with different surface features, the influence degree of each surface feature on the fatigue life was explored. Results showed that surface roughness has the greatest influence on fatigue strength, followed by residual stress, and surface texture has the least influence on fatigue strength.

The objective of this paper is to clarify the effect of grinding surface characteristics in the grinding of a titanium alloy with a coolant supply from the inner side of the grinding wheel. In this paper, we selected a white aluminum oxide (WA) vitrified bonded grinding wheel and a green silicon carbide (GC) vitrified bonded grinding wheel, and compared their grinding characteristics. As a result, in the case of the GC vitrified bonded grinding wheel, the surface roughness decreased by about 54% and the compressive residual stress increased by about 128%.

Small steel ball is utilized in Shot peening process. Called “shot ball” are shot in high speed on the surface of metal. When the shot ball hit the surface, it makes plastic deformation and bounce off, that increase the fatigue life by compressive residual stress on surface. In this study, the results of observation on the tensile strength, hardness, surface roughness, compressive residual stress and fatigue life of a shot peened Al6061-T651 were obtained. Experimental results show that arc height increase tremendously by shot velocity. Also, it shows that surface roughness, hardness, compressive residual stress and fatigue life increase as shot velocity increase.
