A lumped-parameter dynamic model for gear train set in wind turbine is proposed to investigate the dynamics of the speed-increasing gear box. The proposed model is developed in a universal Cartesian coordinate, which includes transversal and torsional deflections of each component, time-varying mesh stiffness, gear profile errors and external excitations. By solving the dynamic model, a modal analysis is performed. The results indicate that the modal properties of the multi-stage gear train in wind turbine are similar to those of a single-stage planetary gear set. A harmonic balance method (HBM) is used to obtain the dynamic responses of the gearing system. The responses give insight into the impact of excitations on the vibrations.

A dynamic model for helical planetary gear train (HPGT) is proposed. Based on the model, the free vibration characteristics, steady-state dynamic responses and effects of design parameters on system dynamics are investigated through numerical simulations. The free vibration of the HGPT is classified into 3 categories. The classified vibration modes are demonstrated as axial translational and torsional mode (AT mode), radial translational and rotational mode (RR mode) and planet mode (P mode) followed by the characteristics of each category. The simulation results agree well with those of previous discrete model when neglecting the component flexibilities, which validates the correctness of the present dynamic model. The steady-state dynamic responses indicate that the dynamic meshing forces fluctuate about the average static values and the time-varying meshing stiffness is one of the major excitations of the system. The parametric sensitivity analysis shows that the impact of the central component bearing stiffness on the dynamic characteristic of the HPGT system is significant.

As braking components, friction plates are key components in automobile transmissions. Due to tough working conditions, i.e. high speed, high friction, fracture and plastic deformation are easily observed in friction plates. However, most of previous studies mainly focused on the chemical analysis of the fracture friction plate, the researches on impact damage have rarely published in the listed literature. In order to investigate the impact damage for friction plate, a dynamic model for a friction plate of a 6-speed planetary gear train is established based on multi-body theory. The dynamic model of planetary gear transmission mechanism is constructed. The rotating speed of the inner hub is obtained. Furthermore, the contact force between the friction plate and the inner hub is calculated. The relationship between the vibration characteristics of the friction plate and operation conditions are studied.

A parallel planetary gear train design is proposed to construct the wind turbine system that has double inputs and one output. The proposed system is flexible for the application, which may use a combination of two rotors, as used for horizontal axis or vertical axis wind turbines. The proposed transmission mechanism merges the dual time varied input wind powers to a synchronous generator. The effect of the gear train parameters on the dynamic power flow variation is modeled and simulated for the proposed wind turbine system. Results indicate the proposed planetary gear train system is a feasible and efficient design for its application to wind turbine systems. The dynamic torque equilibrium equations between meshed gear pairs are employed to analyze the dynamic power flow. The nonlinear behavior of a synchronous generator is also included in the modeling. The dynamic responses of the dual input transmission mechanism are simulated using the 4th order Runge–Kutta method. The study also investigates the effect of system parameters used in this wind turbine system (i.e., the wind speed, the magnetic flux synchronous generator, and the inertia of flywheels) on variations in electrical power output.

Backlash is a key internal excitation on the dynamic response of planetary gear transmission. After the gear transmission running for a long time under load torque, due to tooth wear accumulation, the backlash between the tooth surface of two mating gears increases, which results in a larger and irregular backlash. However, the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear is generally neglected in lots of dynamics analysis for epicyclic gear trains. In order to investigate the impact of backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic behavior of compound planetary gear set, in this work, first a static tooth surface wear prediction model is incorporated with a dynamic iteration methodology to get the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear for one pair of mating teeth under the condition that contact ratio equals to one. Then in order to introduce the tooth accumulated wear into dynamic model of compound planetary gear set, the backlash excitation generated by tooth accumulated wear for each meshing pair in compound planetary gear set is given under the condition that contact ratio equals to one and does not equal to one. Last, in order to investigate the impact of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic response of compound planetary gear set, a nonlinear lumped-parameter dynamic model of compound planetary gear set is employed to describe the dynamic relationships of gear transmission under the internal excitations generated by worn profile, meshing stiffness, transmission error, and backlash. The results indicate that the introduction of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear makes a significant influence on the bifurcation and chaotic characteristics, dynamic response in time domain, and load sharing behavior of compound planetary gear set.

Abstract. A noncircular face gear (NFG) conjugated with a pinion is a new type of face gear which can transmit variable velocity ratio and in which two time-varying excitations exist, namely the meshing stiffness excitation and instantaneous center excitation. Considering the tooth backlash, static transmission error and multifrequency parametric excitation, a nonlinear dynamic model of the NFG pair is presented. Based on the harmonic balance method and discrete Fourier transformation, a semi-analytic approach for the nonlinear dynamic model is given to analyze the dynamic behaviors of the NFG. Results demonstrate that, with increase in the eccentric ratio, input velocity and error amplitude, the NFG will undergo a non-rattle, unilateral rattle and bilateral rattle state in succession, and a jump phenomenon will appear in the dynamic responses when the rattle state of the gears is transformed from unilateral rattle to bilateral rattle.

Planetary gear transmission system is one of the primary parts of the wind turbine drive train. Due to the assembly state, lubrication conditions and wear, the mesh stiffness of the planetary gear system is an uncertain parameter. In this paper, taking the uncertainty of mesh stiffness into account, the dynamic responses of a wind turbine gear system subjected to wind loads and transmission error excitations are studied. Firstly, a lumped-parameter model is extended to include both the planetary and parallel gears. Then the fluctuation ranges of dynamic mesh forces are predicted quantitatively and intuitively based on the combined Chebyshev interval inclusion function and numerical integration method. Finally, examples of gear trains with different interval mesh stiffnesses are simulated and the results show that tooth separations are becoming more obvious at the resonant speed by considering the fluctuating mesh stiffness of the second parallel gear stage. The nonlinear tooth separations are degenerated obviously as the fluctuation error of the mesh stiffness of the second parallel gear set is increased.

This work develops an analytical model of multi-stages planetary gear transmission (PGT) coupled with bearings in housing based on analyzing the displacement relationships of gearing system. The model adopts three planar degree-of-freedom for each of the central components, and the rotational degree-of-freedom for the planets of each stage. Considering the gyroscopic effects, the modified transverse-torsional model is established in the rotating Cartesian coordinates by lumped-parameter method, which is more accurate and may match with the physical model better than the purely torsional model. According to the design parameters of the 3-stage planetary gears of main reducer of shield tunnelling machine, the natural frequencies and vibration modes are investigated by using this transverse-torsional model.

Due to the energy crisis and global warming issues, the wind energy is becoming one of the most attractive renewable energy resources in the world. The drivetrains in the wind turbine tend to fail more prematurely than those in any other applications. Gearbox is the subsystem that causes the most downtime for the wind turbines. In the previous research, only the torsional flexibility of the shaft was considered in the drivetrain model. However, because the shaft is longer than other parts, and components connected by the shaft affect each other via shaft bending, the flexibility of the shaft cannot be ignored. In this study, a spherical joint that consists of three rotational springs was used to define the shaft bending. This shaft bending will affect the drivetrain rotation, the translational motion and the gear mesh contact force. Additionally, the eccentricity and the nacelle movement are analyzed due to the coupled motion. In this paper, a mathematical model of the drivetrain is proposed, which is a three-dimensional dynamic model that includes flexible bearings, a gear mesh model, shaft flexibility, eccentricity, and nacelle movement. The equation of motion of the drivetrain is derived using Lagrange's equation. The governing equation is solved numerically via direct numerical integration. The dynamic responses of the system and contact forces between the gear tooth in the time and frequency domains are calculated numerically. The study shows that this dynamic model of the drivetrain will be highly useful for subsequent studies on the wind turbine condition monitoring.
