The demand for new materials that provide excellent structural performance while reducing weight and being cost-effectively manufactured is increasing. For applications with high strength requirements, ultra-high strength steels (UHSS) have been widely used. However, with such a high strength level, UHSS are very sensitive to the hydrogen that could be ease by the tempering process. In this research, the correlation of hydrogen and tempering process on commercial UHSS 15B30 has been studied. Results show that the tensile strength (TS) of as-quenched 15B30 is about 1900MPa. After tempering treatment of the quenched 15B30, the TS decreases from 1600MPa to 1200MPa with tempering temperature increased from 200°C to 400°C. The 15B30 specimens, being subjected to hydrogen charge, exhibit the dramatic reduction of mechanical strengths.

Laterite Steel A-588 has the potential to be a high strength low alloy for Corten steel application. Laterite steel A-588 is developed through a thermomechanical process followed by a tempering process to obtain high strength and corrosion resistance. This study aims to determine the correlation between the addition of nickel content, the variation of the cooling rate during heat treatment to the mechanical properties, and the corrosion resistance of A-588 laterite steel. The Cu, Cr, Ni, P, and Si elements significantly impact microstructure transformation. Laterite Steel A-588 with nickel and thermo-mechanical process variation has been focused on in this research. Laterite steel with 0,42%, 1%, 2%, and 3% nickel varied was homogenized, hot rolled, and heat treated with three cooling variations by water, oil, and air. They are processed with 150 C tempering. Low tempering temperature caused fine carbide precipitation and phase transition of martensite to bainite. This resulted in bainite as the final microstructure, lath tempered martensite, carbide, and ferrite. 3% Ni with a fast cooling rate increased the tempered martensite and bainite phase formation. It allowed the strength and hardness to increase relatively, followed by decreased elongation and corrosion resistance caused by the galvanic reaction. Most optimal of mechanical properties determined at a sample with 2% nickel in a water medium (strength 1203 MPa, elongation 10%, hardness 404 BHN, corrosion rate 1,306 mpy).

The ongoing need to reduce the weight of products while increasing strength has resulted in new generation steel manufacturing using special heat treatments to produce High Strength Steels (HSS) and Ultra High Strength Steels (UHSS) with up to 1700 MPa tensile strength. The high strength level of these steels makes it possible to produce structures with a considerable weight and cost reduction, and such steels have been adopted in the automotive industry and for mobile heavy equipment. Welding of UHSS is, however, not without its complications and welding processes for these steels need careful attention. For instance, their high susceptibility to cracking and Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) softening are risks that need to be borne in mind when choosing welding parameters. This research work discusses the difficulties and challenges of successful welding of UHSS. Common welding methods used in welding of UHSS are briefly reviewed to gain a better understanding of the effects of different welding parameters and methods. The paper finds that UHSS can be satisfactorily welded with laser welding, electron beam welding, resistance welding, and conventional arc welding methods, but the quality of the weld is dependent on appropriate control of several parameters and variables of the welding processes.

The 4340 are classified as ultra-high strength steels used by the aviation industry and aerospace applications such as aircraft landing gear and several structural applications, usually in quenched and tempered condition. In this situation occurs reduction of toughness, which encourages the study of multiphasic and bainític structures, in order to maintain strength without loss of toughness. In this study, ferritic-pearlitic structure was compared to bainitic and martensitic structure, identified by the reagents Nital, LePera and Sodium Metabisulfite. Sliding wear tests of the type pin-on-disk were realized and the results related to the microstructure of these materials and also to their hardnesses. It is noted that these different microstructures had very similar behavior, concluding that all three tested pairs can be used according to the request level.

Increased passenger safety and emission control are two of the main driving forces in the automotive industry for the development of light weight constructions. For increased strength to weight ratio, ultra-high-strength steels (UHSSs) are used in car body structures. Prediction of failure in such sheet metals is of high significance in the simulation of car crashes to avoid additional costs and fatalities. However, a disadvantage of this class of metals is a pronounced scatter in their material properties due to e.g., the manufacturing processes. In this work, a robust numerical model is developed in order to take the scatter into account in the prediction of the failure in manganese boron steel (22MnB5). To this end, the underlying material properties which determine the shapes of forming limit curves (FLCs) are obtained from experiments. A modified Marciniak–Kuczynski model is applied to determine the failure limits. By using a statistical approach, the material scatter is quantified in terms of two limiting hardening relations. Finally, the numerical solution obtained from simulations is verified experimentally. By generation of the so called forming limit bands (FLBs), the dispersion of limit strains is captured within the bounds of forming limits instead of a single FLC. In this way, the FLBs separate the whole region into safe, necking and failed zones.

<p class="AMSmaintext">Development of high strength or even ultra-high strength steels is mainly driven by the automotive industry which strives to reduce the weight of individual parts, fuel consumption, and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. Another important factor is to improve passenger safety. In order to achieve the required mechanical properties, it is necessary to use suitable heat treatment in addition to an appropriate alloying strategy. The main problem of these types of treatments is the isothermal holding step. For TRIP steels, the holding temperature lies in the field of bainitic transformation. These isothermal holds are economically demanding to perform in industrial conditions. Therefore new treatments without isothermal holds, which are possible to integrate directly into the production process, are searched. One way to produce high-strength sheet is the press-hardening technology. Physical simulation based on data from a real-world press-hardening process was tested on CMnSi TRIP steel. Mixed martensitic-bainitic structures with ferrite and retained austenite (RA) were obtained, having tensile strengths in excess of 1000 MPa.</p>
