ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) with high intrinsic fluorescence quantum efficiency (QY) and low defect luminescence were prepared by hydrothermal method assisted with ammonia, in which the selenium powder and zinc acetate were used as Se and Zn source, and the mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) was used as ligand. Effect of ammonia amount, Zn/Se ratio, Zn/MPA ratio, and reaction time was investigated in detail in this study. The as-prepared ZnSe QDs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible absorption spectrum (UV-Vis), fluorescence spectrum (PL). ZnSe QDs assisted with ammonia were sphalerite, and with emission peak in the range of 380~405nm. The optimal condition was following: Zn/Se ratio was 5, Zn/MPA ration was 0.25, reaction temperature was 110 °C and reaction time was 6 h. Under the optimal condition, ZnSe QDs with intrinsic emission QY of 47% and diameter of 3.8±0.3 nm can be obtained. The ZnSe QDs prepared in this study were expected to replace toxic Cd-related QDs in biomarkers, violet and blue light solid luminescent devices, and provide excellent parent materials for the doped ZnSe QDs system.

Nanocrystals of ZnS have been synthesized through simple chemical precipitation method using thiourea as sulphur source. The synthesized products were annealed at different temperatures in the range of 200–800∘C. The as-synthesized and annealed samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible absorption (UV-Vis), and room temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The morphological features of ZnS annealed at 200 and 500∘C were studied by atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The phase transformation of ZnS and formation of ZnO were confirmed by thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves.

Fe-doped TiO2nanotubes (Fe-TNTs) have been prepared by ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method. The structure and composition of the as-prepared TiO2nanotubes were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. Their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the degradation of MO under visible light. The UV-visible absorption spectra of the Fe-TNT showed a red shift and an enhancement of the absorption in the visible region compared to the pure TNT. The Fe-TNTs were provided with good photocatalytic activities and photostability and under visible light irradiation, and the optimum molar ratio of Ti : Fe was found to be 100 : 1 in our experiments.

Tin oxide nanoparticles (SnO2NPs) were prepared at low temperature by hydrothermal method. Synthesized SnO2NPs were confirmedviacharacterization techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The synthesized nanoparticles were in the size of 3 nm and they have high photocatalytic activity. The result showed that SnO2NPs degraded 88.88% MB solution after 30 minutes of UV illumination and reached 90.0% for 120 minutes (2 hours) of UV illumination. Moreover, they degraded 79.26% MB solution after 90 minutes (1.5 hours) under assisted sunlight illumination.

Anatase TiO2 particles of about 20 nm in the diameter were successfully synthesized with Ti (SO4)2 as titanium source and stronger ammonia water as precipitant at 240°C for 48 h with pH=5 using the hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-VIS). XRD analysis showed that the phase of the samples was anatase TiO2. TEM analysis confirmed that TiO2 particles of about 50 nm in the diameter were obtained when the pH value was 0.12. With the increasement of the pH value, the size of as-prepared TiO2 particles became remarkably fine. However, with the further increase of the pH value, the size of TiO2 particles was not obvious. TiO2 particles of about 20 nm in the diameter were obtained when the pH value was 5. And UV-VIS results showed that the size of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles, which became small, was propitious to the blue shift of their absorption peak.

Novel mace-like (wolf-teeth clubs) CdS nanostructures were successfully prepared on a large scale using CdCl2•2.5H2O and NH2CSNH2 as starting materials through a convenient mixed-solvothermal route. The as-synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The experimental results reveal that the morphology of CdS products was greatly affected by the volume ratio of anhydrous ethanol and distilled water. The possible mechanism for the formation of mace-like CdS nanostructures is simply discussed.

Organically functionalized manganese doped zinc sulfide (ZnS/Mn) quantum dots were prepared by simple chemical method with polypyrrole (PPy) used as a capping agent. Prepared quantum dots were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction microscope (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Crystalline size of PPy capped ZnS/Mn quantum dots for various concentrations of PPy were approximate 2 nm as analyzed by XRD and TEM analysis. The absorption spectra revealed the occurrence of a blue shift in the peak of absorption and an increase in the band gap value due to the quantum confinement effect. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that shifting of broad peak at 2335.8 cm–1 was due to S-H stretching vibrations, which confirmed interaction of hydrogen and sulphur in ZnS/Mn/PPy nanocomposites. Uncapped ZnS/Mn and PPy capped ZnS/Mn quantum dots reveal the effective photoluminescence emission spectra in the range of 300-700 nm. With increase the value of capping agent in ZnS/Mn quantum dots, photoluminescence spectra going to red shifting. The photoluminescence properties of the organically functionalized ZnS nanoparticles are favourable for the application in optoelectronic devices.

Core/shell structured TiO2/ZnO was synthesized in a basic aqueous solution through a simple hydrolyzing method. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy of the initial TiO2/ZnO powder showed diffraction peaks corresponding to the ZnO and TiO2 phase. The structure and thickness of ZnO shell (about 2.5 nm) coated TiO2 surface as thin layers or nanoclusters, depends upon the reactant concentration and the reaction time. The characteristics of the optical absorption were described by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy.

This paper investigates the photocatalytic characteristics of Ag nanowire (AgNW)/TiO2 and AgNW/TiO2/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites. Samples were synthesized by the direct coating of TiO2 particles on the surface of silver nanowires. As-prepared AgNW/TiO2 and AgNW/TiO2/GO nanocomposites were characterized by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV/visible absorption spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images confirmed the successful deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of AgNWs. The photocatalytic activity of synthesized nanocomposites was evaluated using Rhodamine B (RhB) in an aqueous solution as the model organic dye. Results showed that synthesized AgNW/TiO2/GO nanocomposite has superior photocatalytic activities when it comes to the decomposition of RhB.

We report the synthesis of nanorods in a nonionic sugar-based water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsion system using food grade sucrose ester as biosurfactant. was formed by mixing indium (III) chloride and thioacetamide in the water core of the microemulsion system. The as-prepared yellowish was characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Formation of spherical or rod-like nanomaterials was dependent on reaction time. Rod-like , arranged in bundles, was formed only after 2 days of reaction time. Upon longer aging time, a mixture of rod-like and spherical was formed. A plausible formation mechanism of the nanorods in the sucrose ester microemulsion was postulated. The diameter of the nanorods was found to be very small, which is  nm with aspect ratio of 20 : 1 (length : diameter).
