At present time tendencies in the development of engineering and technologies in the manufacturing the metal ware need the effective complex impact on material microstructure by methods of different nature. Special attention should be paid to the combined processes of deformational treatment which are constructed on such basic operations as drawing, rolling, pressing, etc. Despite a plenty of studies and high efficiency of combined methods the problem of understanding the scientific grounds for choice the processing parameters which ensure the guaranteed level and high stability of metals and alloys properties has not been solved jet. Medium carbon steel is used for a wide range of metal ware products. Medium carbon steel wire with 0.5 %C was chosen for the experiments. It was subjected to different kinds of deformational processing such as tensile deformation, alternating bending, twisting and their combination. Complex of experimental research was carried out in order to study the influence of different kinds of plastic deformation on the medium carbon steel wire microstructure. By scanning electron-microscope analysis the peculiarities of pearlite behavior after deformational processing with different total deformation degree were studied. The comparative analysis of cementite changing after different kinds of deformation was conducted.

This study focuses on the evolution in the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of medium carbon steel wires obtained by wire drawing at Tréfissoud Company for the manufacturing of the spring mattress. Wire drawing induces elongation of grains in the direction of drawing with the development of the <110> fibre texture parallel to the wire axis. Kinking and bending of cementite lamellae were observed during the drawing process. The work was carried out respectively on three states, wire rod and drawn states for two different amounts (ε %=43,6 and 60 %), using the optical and SEM microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction and X-ray diffraction analysis for examination of the microstructure and texture evolution, the hardness Vickers and tensile test to follow the curing of the studied wires.

A test study of deformation resistance of S50C medium carbon steel in hot rolling process was conducted by using Gleeble 3500 Thermal-mechanical testing machine. The relationship of deformation resistance with different deformation temperature and deformation rate and deformation degree was analyzed through the stress-strain curve of S50C medium carbon steel which measured in the test. The results show that the deformation resistance increase with decrease of deformation temperature and increase of deformation rate and deformation degree. The math model of plastic deformation for metal of tested steel is established by using 1stopt software with multi-component non-regression. The model is proved has good curve fitting characteristics though a regression analysis of the model, it can be used provide theory basis for the formulation of rolling process and calculation of the mechanical parameters.

The paper presents the results of examinations of tribological and corrosion properties of the layers produced on a C45 medium-carbon steel surface in the gas nitriding process combined with subsequent treatment – oxidation and impregnation of corrosion inhibitor. Investigations of the microstructure of these layers and their phase composition were carried out. Hardness of the layers was measured by Vickers method. Tribological properties (linear wear) of the layers were performed by means of the three-cylinder-cone method. Resistance to corrosion was determined by electrochemical methods. The investigations showed that the linear wear of the C45 steel samples with the layers produced in the combined processes of nitriding with subsequent oxidation and impregnation was smaller than that of steel samples without layers. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of these layers in aggressive solutions containing chloride ions was very good.

The combination of different types of deformation can create a continuous method that ensures the formation of ultrafine-grain structure in medium carbon steel wire. The method is based on drawing operation combined with torsion and bending. Tools and equipment applied in the wire and cables manufacturing are used for the implementation of this method. As a result of the combined strain effect the ultrafine homogeneous structure is formed in the medium carbon steel wire. The wire has increased strength while maintaining the plastic properties when compared with the corresponding properties after drawing.
