AbstractThe Pilot Project “SeaCleaner” is a citizen science and educational project, developed by the Institute of Marine Sciences of the Italian Research Council (CNR-ISMAR). Since 2013, it has involved environmental nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), volunteers, five Italian Marine Protected Areas surrounding the Pelagos Sanctuary, and so far more than 50 high school students within the Italian program for “work-related learning internships.” The project aims to overcome the lack of current data on marine litter—a gap of knowledge that cannot be ignored any longer, according to the last European Union's ambitious Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)—by building an app for Android devices, which is easy to use and, at the same time, methodologically sound and comprehensive. This should enable a continuous census (in time and space) for supporting the proper management and removal of solid waste (through scheduled campaigns, etc.). The project has multiple effects: (1) to prompt students to broaden their scientific knowledge on topics not strictly related to scholastic curricula, making them aware of current environmental problems and teaching them how to solve them; (2) to engage an increasing number of volunteers in marine litter monitoring activities; and (3) to contribute to a common protocol for data acquisition, useful for both environmental and scientific purposes, helping scientists to overcome the lack of current data on marine litter.

In May 2020, Europlanet Society launched a call to fund projects to engage the public with planetary science. Our project proposal called MOMSTER: MObile Meteor STation for Education & outReach was amongst the three projects that were granted.

MOMSTER aims at developing a Meteor Education Kit as a resource for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) teachers in secondary schools. The kit includes a mobile radio meteor station consisting of a dedicated antenna and radio receiver, as well as an educational package to learn all about meteors and their detection methods, while at the same time conveying a fascination for the ephemeral beauty and complexity of these natural light shows. The project goals are stimulating STEAM (ultimately resulting in nudging future career choices towards science or engineering career paths) and the use of citizen science (especially the Radio Meteor Zoo initiative on the online citizen science platform Zooniverse) at schools, and reaching the general public.

The development of educational resources builds upon preliminary experiences we gained by participating in an Erasmus+ project called BRITEC (Bringing Research into ThE Classroom), in which teachers and pupils participated in the Radio Meteor Zoo activity. We are presently in a pilot phase where three Belgian schools (two Dutch speaking and one French speaking) test the mobile radio meteor station and the educational resources, and give their feedback.

We are using STEAM-education as an approach to broaden our target group towards less scientifically oriented students. We do this by developing an educational resource on visual (science) communication. We also organized an art & design competition for high school students with more than 30 submissions. The best piece of art will decorate the ‘MOMSTER boxes’ we use for transport of the radio receivers.

Educators are challenged to create conditions under which instruction has a reasonable probability of improving students’ knowledge and behavior. In high school physical education courses this problem is accentuated when adolescents are not highly receptive to traditional methods of instruction. The answer may lie in curriculum design wherein courses are better packaged to maintain student interest and involvement. The Albuquerque Public School System explored this concept during two consecutive summer terms. An innovative physical education course incorporating unique field experiences, high levels of participation, and reinforcement of individual responsibility was designed and implemented in a pilot project. When compared to traditional physical education classes, mixed results were obtained for various physical fitness measures and knowledge scores. The implications for designing physical education courses are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to examine parents’ perceived social change and its relations with adolescents’ reports of childrearing attitudes in urban and rural China. The participants were high school students and their parents in a Northern region of China. Parents completed a measure of perceived social change, and the adolescents completed a measure of childrearing attitudes including parental warmth, control, and encouragement of independence. The results indicated that urban parents had higher scores than rural parents on major dimensions of perceived social change including work-related opportunities, self-improvement in work, and high-tech experiences. Urban adolescents reported lower parental control and higher parental encouragement of independence than rural adolescents. In addition, parents’ reports of opportunities and prospects were positively associated with adolescents’ reports of parental warmth and encouragement of independence in childrearing across the urban and rural groups, suggesting that parents who perceived more challenges and opportunities to pursue self-advancement and personal career goals were more likely to support the use of warm and sensitive parenting and to encourage their children to develop independent behaviors. The results indicated the implications of social change for socialization and adolescent development in Chinese context.

This study investigated the work-related skills awareness levels of high school students with disabilities by comparing expert ratings and student self-report ratings. This issue is considered important because (a) evidence indicates that lack of awareness is associated with poor employment outcomes and (b) young persons with disabilities are known to experience employment difficulties. Substantial deficits in awareness were found, with the majority of students overestimating their abilities, as hypothesized. In addition, students perceived by adult raters as having greater employability assets tended to be more accurate in their work-related skills awareness. Suggestions for interventions and future research needed in this area are included.

Abstract

This research aims to describe Anton Ismael's photography works seen from the study of semiotics. The research subject was a photographic work related to social issues around an attractive environment by Anton Ismael. While the object of research is in the form of material objects and formal objects (objects that are invisible, which are in the work of Anton Ismael which can be studied using semiotics). The research focused on the problems related to Anton Ismael's photographic works seen from the study of semiotics Charles Sander Peirce and Roland Barthes. The results of the study show that: (1) Anton Ismael's photographic works are based on Charles Sanders Peirce's theories such as icons, indices and symbols. The iconic forms in the work include high school students, high school uniforms, roses, mountains, places to eat, instant noodles and others. The index on photo works contains the life of school children, problems that often arise in school, school environment. (2) Analysis of Anton Ismael's photo works seen from the study of semiotics. From the analysis that has been done, in Anton Ismael's photo work always shows the existence of a relationship or relationship between signs. Icons, indexes, and symbols are good in form, print collage, paint and are always related and explain more or less the meaning contained in each work. In other words, photos can describe the contents implied in each work so that the information delivered will be more easily captured.
