The aim was to study the prevalence of comorbidities in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in everyday clinical practice and their association with disease-specific and demographic factors. The multi-center study recruited 3,247 (at 14 centers, and 265) were excluded due to incomplete data. The number of subjects considered for the analysis was 2982. The mean (±standard deviation) age was 48.98±12.64 years and the male-to-female ratio was 1:5. The data was collected based on a pre-structured pro forma by trained clinical research associates through interview and verification of charts and reports available in the patient records. The following comorbidities were studied: cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, thyroid disease, psychiatric diseases like depression, and pulmonary disease. Hypertension (20.7%), diabetes mellitus (14.4%) and thyroid disease (18.3%) were the most prevalent comorbidities. Hypercholesterolemia (5.3%), pulmonary diseases (2.1%), cardiovascular diseases (0.2%) and depression (0.03%) were prevalent in ≤5% of the study population. The overall presence of comorbidity increased with age and reduced with the duration of illness prior (DOIP). The age, gender, and DOIP differed significantly between groups with and without hypercholesterolemia. Females had a statistically increased prevalence of thyroid disease. The prevalence of comorbidities in RA patients from south India is around 40% and the incidence of comorbidity increased with age. As per the literature evidence, the prevalence in the current study subjects was higher when compared to prevalence of similar diseases occurring in the general south Indian population.

ABSTRACT The present study was undertaken to assess the skeletal craniofacial asymmetry in South Indian population by a posteroanterior cephalometric radiographic method. The skeletal craniofacial structures on one side of the face were compared with that of the other, by drawing various triangles representing different craniofacial regions. The sample consisted of 60 subjects (30 males and 30 females) aged between 18 to 25 years, who were mainly dental college students from South India. Overall 52 X-rays were obtained, with four errors each in the male and the female groups. The results revealed that the total facial structures in the South Indian population were larger on the left side (statistically insignificant). The cranial base area exhibited a greater degree of asymmetry than any other component area of the face, which might be due to the inaccuracy at the condylar point. AbstractObjectiveFew dietary surveys have been done with reference to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, in India, which is considered to be the diabetes capital of the world. We report on the dietary intake of urban adults living in Chennai, South India.DesignA population-based cross-sectional study.SettingA representative population of urban Chennai in southern India.SubjectsThe study population comprised 2042 individuals aged ≥20 years selected from the Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiological Study (CURES). Dietary intake was measured using a validated and previously published interviewer-administered semi-quantitative meal-based FFQ.ResultsThe mean daily energy intake was 10 393 (sd 2347) kJ (male: 10953 (sd 2364) kJ v. female: 9832 (sd 233) kJ). Carbohydrates were the major source of energy (64 %), followed by fat (24 %) and protein (12 %). Refined cereals contributed to the bulk of the energy (45·8 %), followed by visible fats and oils (12·4 %) and pulses and legumes (7·8 %). However, energy supply from sugar and sweetened beverages was within the recommended levels. Intake of micronutrient-rich foods, such as fruit and vegetable consumption (265 g/d), and fish and seafoods (20 g/d), was far below the FAO/WHO recommendation. Dairy and meat products intake was within the national recommended intake.ConclusionsThe diet of this urban South Indian population consists mainly of refined cereals with low intake of fish, fruit and vegetables, and all of these could possibly contribute to the risk of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes in this population.

Diabetes mellitus [DM] is a major disease worldwide with increasing prevalence. Its etiologic heterogeneity comprising genetic predisposition and environmental factors may provide a characteristic feature among the population helpful for the early diagnosis. This study aims to evaluate the palmar dermatoglyphic patterns in DM patients. This case controlled cross-sectional study included 100 type 2 DM patients in group A and 100 healthy subjects in group B. Each group has equal gender distribution. The palmar dermatoglyphics were evaluated quantitatively using standard methods. Student’s t-test and Chi-square test was used to determine the level of significance. The palmar triradius number varied significantly (Pd”0.0001). The angle of palm variations were statistically insignificant between groups, but TAD angle showed significant gender variations in group A patients (Pd”0.0001). The variation in palmar triradius revealed in this study may help in early diagnosis of type 2 DM patients and also may provide a scope for further studies with larger sample size.

Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disorder in the world. The metabolic dysregulation of diabetes mellitus affects multiple organs like Kidneys, nerves, eyes and heart. Worldwide Among all diabetics, 20-40% of the people are suffering from Diabetic Nephropathy. Oxidative stress is increased by hyperglycemia in which Reactive Oxygen Species has been implicated in the pathology of these complications. The aim of our present study is one such attempt to find the role of oxidative stress by estimating the levels of oxidants and anti oxidant levels in diabetic nephropathy in ethnic south Indian population. 30 diagnosed cases of diabetic Nephropathy  were taken as cases and 30 age and sex matched Type 2 Diabetes mellitus patients were included as controls in the study. For oxidant levels Malondialdehyde (MDA) was estimated and for anti oxidant levels Super oxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx), Glutathione Reductase (GR) were measured. Statistically significant increase is observed in the levels of Malondialdehyde in cases when compared to controls. There is no statistical significant difference in the levels of Superoxide dismutase and Glutathione peroxidase between cases and controls. Whereas statistical significant difference is observed in the levels of Glutathione reductase in Diabetic Nephropathy cases when compared with controls.

BACKGROUND Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a validated screening tool widely used to assess perinatal depression (PND). However, due to stigma associated with PND, respondents could answer sensitive questions differently depending on the mode of administration, especially in culturally and linguistically diverse country like India. The present study explored longitudinal differences in EPDS scores between self-administered and interviewer-administered modes OBJECTIVE The main objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in EPDS administration between the self-administered and interviewer-administered modes, a longitudinal observational study to understand and improve the test score interpretation. The present study explores differences in EPDS scores in assessing PND longitudinally, comparing self and interview-based modes of EPDS administration in perinatal women of rural South India METHODS 177 women from rural South India were administered EPDS, self-administration followed by interviewer-administered for four visits, twice each during prenatal and postnatal visits. EPDS scores were compared between the two modes descriptively, graphically and by repeated mixed measure models. Classification of antenatal depression (AD), postnatal depression (PD) and PND based on the two modes were compared by McNemar Chi-square test. Clinical and psychosocial characteristics were examined to identify factors associated with differences in the scoring modes. Concordance rates and Goodman Kruskal’s Gamma coefficients were measured for individual EPDS items. RESULTS Longitudinal EPDS scores and rates of AD, PD and PND were significantly higher in self-administered mode. Recent adverse life events were the only factor observed to be significantly associated with the differences between the two modes. Rank correlation and concordance rates suggested stronger association for EPDS items relating to anhedonia subscale and moderate/weaker association for EPDS items relating to anxiety/depression subscales. CONCLUSIONS Our study findings suggest that the effect of mode of administration should be taken into account while using PND screening tools such as EPDS, especially in countries such as India with higher levels of illiteracy. CLINICALTRIAL The study was registered with the Clinical Trials Registry of India, registration no. CTRI/2017/11/010497 and was conducted from October 2017 to May 2019.
