A descriptive exploratory survey was undertaken by means of a questionnaire submitted to student nurses and registered nurses of hospitals affiliated with a nursing college in the Transvaal. The aim of the study was to establish whether, and to what extent, the training function of the ward sister is realised in practice. Analysis of the data showed the ward sister to be aware of her training function and her responsibility towards the student nurse as learner. It appears that the ward sister believes herself to be adequately involved with the basic care of patients and making a significant contribution to the training of student nurses. However, the observations and the experience of the student nurse differ from this point of view. She is of the opinion that more can be done in the ward to help her achieve her training needs. The fact that in many cases she is primarily considered as a worker, comes as a great disappointment.

Background: Student nurse attendance during training is mandatory, and the South African Nursing Council (SANC) stipulates that students must attend 80% of hours for both theory and practice during their training. Unauthorised student nurse absenteeism, especially in the clinical areas, has become an increasing problem in nursing education institutions and in the universities. This study explored student absenteeism with the aim of generating solutions that are specifically relevant to the context of the Free State College of Nursing.Objectives: The objectives of the study were to describe perceived personal reasons and reasons related to clinical areas that contribute to student nurses’ absenteeism from the clinical areas and to explore the relationship between demographic data and reasons for absenteeism.Method: A quantitative research design with descriptive and exploratory strategies was used. Data were collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 23.0. One hundred and fifty-two student nurses were sampled after permission to conduct the study was requested and obtained.Results: The results showed that 72.4% of respondents agreed that students are absent because of physical illness. The majority of students (97.3%) at the selected campus are absent from clinical areas because they are covering staff shortages. The findings showed no particular relationship between gender and absenteeism as absenteeism was present throughout.Conclusion: Student nurses at a selected campus are generally absent at the clinical areas because they are physically ill and are funded for studying but not paid for working. It was recommended that accurate records of attendance should be kept and absenteeism rates be calculated at frequent intervals.

The student nurse may have a different perception of her learning environment from that which the instructor intended. The purpose of the study was to determine the perception of student nurses of clinical midwifery experience as a teaming milieu. Student nurses in their third and fourth year at a nursing college in Transvaal were involved in the research. A literature study regarding factors that can influence clinical learning of student nurses in the midwifery units was done. Questionaires were used to collect data regarding personal information, the learning environment, and problems regarding clinical skills. Data were analysed by means of a SAS computer programme.

In caring with awareness, the student nurse is able to be present in the moment, while being with the patient. Such student nurses treat patients holistically, considering the patient’s mind, body, and spirit. Purpose: To elicit the importance of caring with awareness in order to facilitate student nurses’ caring toward patients. Hypothesis: There is a positive relationship between student nurses acting with awareness and caring. Method: A quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and contextual research design with a purposive sampling method was used in the study. Respondents ( n = 56) were student nurses in their third- and fourth-year level of study. Data were collected by use of a self-administered questionnaire. Findings: There was a negative correlation between acting with awareness and caring. There was no difference in caring among third- and fourth-year students. Conclusion: Student nurses may be caring for patients, but it does not necessarily mean they act with awareness in caring. Awareness should be cultivated among student nurses for them to be present in caring and provide holistic caring.

T he researcher, being a nursing lecturer, questioned the method of selection of learning opportunities for student nurses in two training hospitals in the Northern part of Namibia.The study therefore focused on the following objective: To identify the factors that influence the selection of learning opportunities for primary health care in hospital units. A qualitative research design utilising focus group discussions were used. The population consisted of conveniently selected lecturers, student nurses and registered nurses. The same initial question was asked in each focus group to initiate the discussions. The data were analysed according to Tesch's method.The results indicated that there is positive commitment from the lecturers and registered nurses to be involved in selecting appropriate learning opportunities. The student nurses also demonstrated a willingness to learn and to be exposed to learning opportunities in primary health care. There were however certain constraints that emerged as themes, namely: • Managerial constraints • Educational constraints Under the theme "managerial constraints" categories such as workload, nursing staff shortages and communication problems were identified. Under the theme "educational constraints" categories such as a lack of guidance, and the correlation of theory and practice emerged.Recommendations based on this research report include improvement of in-service education on managerial and educational aspects to facilitate the primary health care approach in hospitals.

The valorisation of industrial waste in the field of construction became a very interesting axis of research from scientific, economic and environmental point of view. We have conducted this work to study the effect of the addition of polypropylene fibres waste on the mechanical behaviour of reinforced concrete beams subjected to a simple flexural loading, with and without transversal reinforcement. The used fibres are coming from the waste of the fabrication of domestic brushes and sweeps; they have an average diameter of 0.47 mm and a length between 40 and 60 mm. Two weight dosages of fibres are used, 0.25 and 0.5 %. The experimental results showed that the incorporation of polypropylene fibres waste into the concrete affects negatively its workability, but its flexural and compressive strength are improved. The fibers have presented a significant contribution on the shear behavior and the cracking of beams, particularly in absence of transversal bars. The waste used in this work as fibrous reinforcement has not only increased the ductility of reinforced concrete beams, but it have also provided a perfect cracking distribution on the concrete surface and it has participated in a considerable way in the reduction of cracks number and dimensions, which allows to ensure the material durability and then the structure longevity. The reinforcement of concrete beams with 0.5 % of polypropylene fibers waste with a minimal steel bars can ensure an excellent mechanical behavior in shear, as in flexion.

According to Kotzé (1987:5) the numbers of student nurses showed a constant drop of 10% from 1981 until 1986, It appears that the ratio between the registered nurse and the population will severely worsen. It is therefore necessary that the educational standard of student nurses must be as high as possible to render a comprehensive service to a growing population. Computer-aided instruction can also play a role in the training of student nurses but can also help to keep student nurses as well as registered nurses in touch with the latest developments and introduce them to advanced technology like the computer.

In recent years, there has been an increase in academic studies that examine the advantages and disadvantages of using e-questionnaires in organizations, but these studies have tended to ignore the potential differences between human resource (HR) managers and HR consultants with regards to using this tool. This chapter examines the use of e-questionnaires from the point of view of both types of practitioners. The study includes a qualitative exploratory survey, as well as a quantitative survey. T-tests, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis are performed and results support the three propositions that are presented. Specifically, it was found that (a) HR consultants and HR managers differ in the ranking of factors they think are important when deciding whether to use e-questionnaires; (b) preference differences exist between HR managers and HR consultants - managers are more directed by organizational constraints than consultants; and (c) the groupings for e-questionnaire preferences, compared to paper-and-pencil questionnaires, are consistent with Caldwell’s (2003) four roles of HR managers. The chapter concludes with implications and suggestions for future research.

AbstractDespite increased engagement of Indigenous representatives as participants on consultative panels charged with processes of natural resource management, concerns have been raised by both Indigenous representatives and management agencies regarding the ability of Indigenous people to have quality input into the decisions these processes produce. In order to determine how to more effectively engage Australian Aboriginal peoples in the management process, this article describes the results of interviews with Elders of the Bundjalung Nation and other community representatives who represent their community's interests on natural resource management boards within their traditional country. Community representatives identified the factors they considered important in understanding natural resource management and administrative processes and where training would enable them to make a significant contribution to the consultation process. It also highlighted a need for non-Indigenous managers to gain a greater understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems and protocols.
