<p>The purpose of this article is to determine the attributes of entrepreneurs at festivals, in this case an arts festival. The reason for choosing an arts festival is that the largest festivals (judged by number of visitors and income generated) hosted in South Africa annually are arts festivals. A literature review revealed that this type of study had not previously been conducted in South Africa. In order to generate proper data, a survey was conducted of all small businesses that were trading at one of South Africa’s largest arts festivals, namely the Aardklop National Arts Festival, held annually in the city of Potchefstroom. 222 useable questionnaires were captured and the data analysis included a factor analysis and descriptive results. The main results reveal that the most important attributes are a need for achievement, being successful, having the necessary organising skills, selfedification, being explorative, and commitment.        </p><strong>Key words:</strong> entrepreneurs, arts festivals, event tourism, South Africa, attributes, Aardklop National Arts Festival

Purpose: Arts festivals, as a form of event tourism, are becoming more and more popular in South Africa with new festivals developing annually. The Volksblad Arts Festival in Bloemfontein celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2005. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the economic impact of the annual Volksblad Arts Festival on the local economy of Bloemfontein. Results are also compared with research done at other popular festivals in South Africa. Design/Methodology/Approach: The main thrust of the paper is to determine the economic impact of the Volksblad Arts Festival in Bloemfontein. More than 400 visitor questionnaires and 72 business questionnaires were administered and successfully completed during the festival that took place from 12-17 July 2005. Findings: The results show that this festival generates R18 405 653. If one compares it to festivals such as the KKNK in Oudtshoorn, the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and even Aardklop held in Potchefstroom, it is evident that Volksblad is a smaller festival and it is therefore also expected that the economic impact of the festival should be less. Implications: This paper presents a comprehensive approach to understanding the measurement of the economic impact of a festival like the Volksblad Arts Festival. It provides tourism managers of Bloemfontein with an indication of the potential of event tourism as a source of income for the city. It also indicates the need for more extensive marketing in order to increase the percentage of non-local visitors to the particular festival. Originality/Value: Bloemfontein is increasingly regarded as an event tourism destination rather than an end destination for leisure tourists. This research represents an original attempt to indicate the potential impact of events to the tourism managers of Bloemfontein as well as other destinations with similar interests.

The Grahamstown National Arts Festival is the oldest National Arts Festival in South Africa and was founded in 1974. This celebration of the arts takes place over a period of eleven days with the main festival running over eight days, which also makes it the longest (in terms of number of days) arts festival in the country. The literature review revealed that high spenders at arts festivals are also the visitors who buy the most show tickets. The success of these events is determined by ticket sales and not necessarily by the number of visitors. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to determine who the high spenders at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival are. Data obtained during the festival in 2008 by means of a questionnaire survey (N=446) was statistically analysed by means of K-means clustering, Pearson‟s chi-square test and ANOVAs. Results indicated two clusters, namely high and low spenders and can assist festival organisers in developing a more focused marketing strategy and festival programme. This was the first time that K-means clustering was applied to festival data in South Africa.

A 3-year long survey was conducted in the Tshwane geographical region of Gauteng Province in South Africa in order to identify and quantify key predictors of adequate municipal services that are routinely provided to customers who operate newly established small businesses in the City of Tshwane, Pretoria, South Africa. Data was collected by using a structured, pre-tested and validated questionnaire of study from a stratified random sample of size 1, 058 small businesses. The key objective of study was to assess the relationship between viability in small businesses and the provision of quality municipal services by the City of Tshwane. The study was conducted against the background of a high failure rate among newly established small businesses in the City of Tshwane. The study was conducted over a 3-year period (2012 to 2014). Data was collected monthly during the three-year period of study on socioeconomic variables that are known to affect the perception of business operators on the quality of municipal services to business operators and the general public. Statistical procedures such as cross-tab analyses, panel data analysis, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms and Bayesian methods were used for estimating parameters. The study showed that there was a significant association between positive perception of business operators on the quality of municipal services provided to them and viability of businesses. The results showed that 87% of viable businesses were satisfied with the quality of routine municipal services that were provided to them by the City of Tshwane. The corresponding figure for non-viable businesses was only 14%. The viability of businesses was significantly influenced by 3 predictor variables. These predictor variables were: lack of capacity for fulfilling the business and entrepreneurial needs of newly established businesses [Hazard Ratio = 3.58; P=0.000; 95% C. I. = (1.45, 5.46)], inappropriate policy [Hazard Ratio = 3.19; P=0.000; 95% C. I. = (1.39, 5.28)], and lack of tailor made training programmes directed at newly established small businesses [Hazard Ratio = 2.89; P=0.000; 95% C. I. = (1.24, 4.77)], in a decreasing order of strength. Similar findings were obtained from the analyses of in-depth interviews.

Com efeito, o que estamos propondo neste trabalho é a análise sobre o projeto “Adeus aos lixões”, que colocou em prática a teoria adquirida na academia, construindo dessa forma uma intervenção socioambiental na comunidade rio-grandina. São questões de pesquisa deste artigo: Quais os resultados do projeto “Adeus aos lixões”? Essa intervenção teve resultados permanentes? Na busca pela aproximação desse cenário, foram escolhidas as metodologias da pesquisa bibliográfica e análise documental. Assim sendo o objetivo disseminar e fomentar novos conhecimentos acerca da História Ambiental da cidade do Rio Grande. Palavras-Chave: História Ambiental; Resíduos Sólidos; Meio Ambiente. Abstract There is debate about what should actually be done to generate a more worthy and equal tomorrow, mainly within universities. Indeed, what we are proposing in this paper is the analysis of the "Farewell to the dumps" project, which put into practice the theory gained in the gym, building that forms an environmental intervention in the River grandina community. Are research questions of this article: What are the results of the Project Goodbye to landfills? This intervention had permanent results? In the search for approximation of this scenario were chosen methodologies of literature review and document analysis. Therefore the objective to disseminate and promote new knowledge about the environmental history of the city of Rio Grande. Key-words: Environmental History; SolidWaste; Environment.

‘Smart Cities’ is a new and inventive approach that allows city management to use current infrastructure and resources more effectively. Participatory crowdsourcing is an effective method to collect data from the citizens, as it does not require costly new infrastructure and can be used by all citizens, regardless of their literacy level. To date, very few studies have investigated the usability these participatory crowdsourcing systems in a developing country context. The focus of this paper is then to provide a model for the usability of the IVR system to collect information from citizens to improve public safety in the city. The study makes use of a quantitative survey method. A questionnaire was completed by 361 participants of a public safety project hosted East London, South Africa. The data analysis was completed making use of factor analysis. The results indicated that efficiency and perceived satisfaction with the system was important elements that determined the usability of the system. The recommendation of the study is then that the city management must take these two elements in to account when designed or developing a participatory crowdsourcing system.

This article asks how theatre shapes civic space by examining the emergence of racial divides in the city of Grahamstown, South Africa, during the annual National Arts Festival (NAF). I track how decision making by festival organizers has relied on economic research and implicit artistic preferences that have resulted in the steady exclusion of artists from local townships. I argue that the presence of the NAF in Grahamstown creates fault lines that are not physical, but aesthetic, in nature, creating invisible boundaries that reward stage performances at the expense of street performances. I track a history of street performance at the NAF, with particular attention to its local mime tradition, to demonstrate how this axis of festivity was integral to developing the NAF's cultural cachet, but was systematically managed, policed or appropriated to fit organizers’ image for Grahamstown at festival time. This work troubles aspirational narratives of creative and cultural industries that South Africa and other African countries have come to rely upon as inclusive and sustainable routes of economic development.

The purpose of the study was to identify and quantify differential factors that are known to adversely affect sustained growth and development in newly established Small, Micro and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMMEs) conducting business in and around Tshwane in South Africa. The study is based on a 5-year follow-up study (2007 to 2012) of a random sample of 349 small business enterprises that operate in and around the City of Pretoria in South Africa. Data was gathered from each of the businesses on socioeconomic factors that are known to affect the long-term survival of small businesses. The objective of the study was to identify and quantify key predictors of viability and long term survival. The study found that 188 of the 349 businesses that took part in the study (54%) were not viable, and that the long-term survival and viability of small businesses was adversely affected by lack of entrepreneurial skills, lack of supervisory support to newly established businesses, and inability to operators running newly established businesses to acquire relevant vocational skills

Traditional food is food that is formed by a process of development that lasts for years, because of the fear of being abandoned by the younger generation, forgetting and refusing to consume traditional food which has existed before. So the purpose of this study is to determine the factors that influence the motivation of traditional food culinary lovers in Semarang City. The data analysis technique used is descriptive statistics and factor analysis using the SPSS 25 program. Based on the results of the research that has been done, the following conclusions can be drawn. The motivational factors for choosing food for traditional food culinary lovers in the city of Semarang by using 400 respondents can be drawn the following conclusions, namely, there are six determining factors that can be seen from the highest loading factor of each formed factor. These factors are natural ingredients factors, sensory attractiveness factors, price, mood factors, healthy food factors, and familiarity factors. The dominant factor of motivation for choosing food for traditional food culinary lovers is the natural content factor.

Purpose and/or objectives: The purpose of this article was to segment festival visitors at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) based on their travel motives and their ratings of the Key Success Factors (KSFs) in terms of their festival experience. Problem investigated: Previous research has indicated that the success and sustainability of an arts festival is dependent on the number of tickets sold for shows and productions during the festival. Therefore, success depends on attracting visitors who attend and buy tickets for different types of shows and productions. To achieve this festival organisers need to understand the aspects that visitors regard as satisfying their needs and which create a unique festival experience. Methodology: A survey was conducted using a questionnaire at the festival. A total of 450 questionnaires were administered and 443 completed questionnaires were included in the analysis. Factor analysis was used to identify visitors' motivation to travel to and attend the KKNK. Cluster analysis followed the factor analysis to segments visitors based their identified travel motives. ANOVAs, Chi-square tests, two-way frequency tables and Tukey's multiple comparisons were conducted to investigate and determine any significant differences between the clusters based on demographics, behavioural variables and KSFs. Analysis and interpretation of findings: The findings of this study revealed that the travel motives that are important to visitors to the arts festival are: Festival Attractiveness, Novelty and Escape and Socialisation. Furthermore, different markets have different travel motives, clustered as Escapists, Festival Junkies and Culture Seekers. These different clusters have different tastes and needs, for example the Culture Seekers are more interested in Rock shows and all three clusters enjoy Drama, Music Theatre and Cabaret and Comedy shows and productions. Different markets also focus on different KSFs that influence their experience of the event. Escapists rated Venues and Shows and Stalls as the most important KSF in managing the festival, whereas Festival Junkies and Culture Seekers rated Safety and Personnel and Shows and Stalls as the most important. The value of the research: This research provides several insights. First, travel motives are a good base or foundation for segmenting visitors to arts festivals. Hence, it is important to have an in-depth understanding of why visitors attend the arts festival and what they expect to experience at the arts festival. Second, this research makes a contribution to the literature around travel motives, market segmentation, festival management and need satisfaction. Finally, the results show that festival organisers cannot base their planning on a general evaluation of visitors, but that different markets have different needs and also regard different factors are important to their overall experience. Conclusion: This research can help festival organisers understand what visitors want to experience at an arts festival and how they want to experience it.
