EVALUATION OF TWENTY GRASS POPULATIONS AS IRRIGATED HAY CROPS FOR SOUTHWESTERN SASKATCHEWAN

Twenty grass populations were evaluated for dry matter yield, N content, P content, organic matter content, organic matter digestibility and winterhardiness. Of these populations, Agropyron intermedium was most suitable for a hay crop on a well-drained irrigated soil. Agropyron trichophorum, Bromus inermis, and Phalaris arundinacea were lower-yielding alternatives that had a satisfactory N content and good digestibility. Elymus angustus shows promise as an irrigated hay crop and should be evaluated further. The usefulness of the following populations was limited by one or more of these factors: low yield (Y), low N content (N), low digestibility (D) and lack of winterhardiness (W): Dactylis glomerata ’Kay’ (Y,N,D), Dactylis glomerata ’Chinook’ (Y,N,W), Elymus sibiricus (Y), Festuca arundinacea ’Kenmont’ (Y,N,W), Festuca elatior ’Trader’ (Y,N), Phleum pratense (Y,N,D), Poa ampla ’Sherman’ (N,D), Poa bulbosa cv. P4874 (Y,N,D), and Poa pratensis (Y,N,D).

The quality and palatibility of silage and hay complete ration based on organic primer garbage in peranakan etawah (PE) poadABSTRACT. This research was conducted to study the quality and palatability of silage and hay complete ration based on organic primer garbage in nine heads of Peranakan Etawah (PE) Goat. The quality of silage and hay was evaluated By measuring pH, total number of lactic acid Bacteria (LAB), palatability, dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) aroma and color of silage. Nine heads of peranakan etawah were grouped based on their lactation periode and randomly assigned to one of tree dietary treatments. The treatments were (1) Control rations; (2) silage complete ration (SRK); and (3) Hay complete ration (HRK). The results indicated that the silage had PH 4.15 and total number of LAB was 2.4 x 10 cfu/g of silage. Dry matter and organic matter digestibility of SRK were better than those of HRK. The palatability of SRK was higher than HRK but less than control. Storage of SRK for did not change dry matter and organic matter content. Organoleptic analysis indicated that texture and color of HRK were changed at after storage, while SRK was still constant. It is concluded that silage composed of organic primer garbage has high quality in terms of physical, chemical and microbial characteristics, prolong storage.

Steers of 252 kg initial mean liveweight were fed 0.44 kg of hay dry matter (DM)/head day-1 plus five rates of whole oats, crushed wheat or whole wheat, with the crushed wheat rations providing 0.7 to 1.3 times the estimated energy for maintenance. All-grain rations at these energy levels had been attempted, but resulted in digestive upset, and were abandoned. The results obtained, listed in the order of the above grains, were : 1 ) grain in ration to maintain liveweight: 1.31, 1.41 and 1.85 kg DMIhead day-1 ; 2) additional grain for each 10 kg improvement in liveweight over I2 weeks: 434,466 and 61 3 g DMIhead day-1 ; 3) mean digestible organic matter content (DOM) of rations, tested at the highest and lowest rates of grain : 69.4, 84.5 and 68.3%. The DOM of the oat rations declined by 8.1 units from the lowest to highest rate of grain. The relative liveweight change on oats could not be explained by the DOMs. Nevertheless, the results suggest, for similar conditions to those applying in our experiment, that: 1) whole oats may be at least as good a feed as crushed wheat, and both will be much better than whole wheat; 2) the feed requirement for maintenance may be about 20% less than standard recommendations; 3) even a little hay in the ration, compared with grain only, may greatly reduce the likelihood of digestive upset

Forty samples of grass silages, made from the five most widely used grass species in ruminant nutrition (<I>Dactylis glomerata</I> L.,<I>Phleum pratense</I> L., <I>Lolium perenne</I> L., <I>Festuca arundinacea</I> L. and hybrid Felina) were tested in the present study. These grass species conserved by an ensiling process were compared among each other according to dry matter (DM) rumen degradability parameters (<I>a</I> = portion of DM solubilized at initiation of incubation, <I>b</I> = fraction of DM potentially degradable in the rumen, <I>c</I> = rate constant of disappearance of fraction b and ED<sub>DM</sub> = effective degradability of DM, estimated for each ingredient assuming the rumen solid outflow rates of 0.02 (ED<sub>DM2</sub>), 0.05 (ED<sub>DM5</sub>) and 0.08 (ED<sub>DM8</sub>) h<sup>–1</sup>). Based on the chemical composition of grass silages the regression equations for prediction of ED<sub>DM</sub> were evaluated. The influence of the ensiling process on dry matter degradability parameters was also assessed. The best values of ED<sub>DM</sub> were determined for <I>Lolium perenne</I> (ED<sub>DM2</sub> = 753.2, ED<sub>DM5</sub> = 631.1 and ED<sub>DM8</sub> = 567.7 g/kg DM). The best predictor was NDF (<I>R</I><sup>2</sup>-values of 0.757 (ED<sub>DM2</sub>), 0.863 (ED<sub>DM5</sub>) and 0.906 (ED<sub>DM8</sub>)). Using two predictors the accuracy level increased. The combination of CF and NDF gave <I>R</I><sup>2</sup>-values 0.892, 0.920 and 0.929 for ED<sub>DM2</sub>, ED<sub>DM5</sub> and ED<sub>DM8</sub>, respectively. The regression equations based on the most important grass species harvested in different vegetation periods seem to be a useful tool for practical use. No significant <I>P</I> < 0.05) effect of the ensiling process in relation to dry matter rumen degradability parameters was proved.

In 2014-2016 at the Research Institute of Mountain Stockbreeding and Agriculture- Troyan, we followed the change in the qualitative composition of dry biomass from two-component grass mixtures. The grasslands with the mixture of Trifolium repens L. - Poa pratensis L. have the highest crude protein content (151.6 g kg-1 DM), mineral substances (75.6 g kg-1 DM) and crude fat (33.9 g kg-1 DM). The legume grass associated with perennial ryegrass forms forage matter with the highest carbohydrate amount (434.9 g kg-1 DM) and the lowest amount of crude fiber (269.8 g kg-1 DM). The biomass of Lotus corniculatus L. and Festuca rubra L. is the richest in Ca (19.1 g kg-1 DM), and the mixture of blue hybrid alfalfa - cock's foot has the highest dry matter content (909.7 g kg-1 DM). The biomass of blue hybrid alfalfa - cock's foot (16.99 MJ/kg DM) and red clover - meadow fescue (16.96 MJ/kg DM) is with the highest caloric values. Both mixtures have almost identical values regardless of the different botanical composition and the predominant component in the grassland. The mixture of Trifolium pratense L. with Phleum pratense L. has the highest energy nutritional value (FUM - 0.71 kg DM and FUG - 0.66 kg DM), and the biomass of the blue hybrid alfalfa - cock's foot registered the lowest amount of exchange energy (7.30 MJ/kg DM), as well as the smallest number of feed units (FUM - 0.67 kg DM and FUG - 0.61 kg DM) in the dry matter. For the experimental period with the lowest values of gross energy (16.70 MJ/kg DM) are the mixed grasslands of Trifolium repens L.

Burning, plowing or removing straw from the fields with eight successively planted rice crops did not significantly affect rice yields, N content of the straw or grain, recovery of fertilizer N or organic matter content of the soil. Yields increased with N applications up to over 100 kg/ha. N contents of the straw and grain also increased irrespective of method of straw disposal. Nitrogen applications did not affect N or organic matter content of the soil.

A glasshouse experiment was conducted to study the effect of temporary flooding on the growth and development of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Deltapine 61) and the recovery of nitrogen applied as urea fertiliser in two black earths differing in organic matter content, with three water treatments. Two floodings were applied, at 15 days after planting and at 45 days.Plant dry weight and growth characteristics of the cotton plant such as height, number of leaves, leaf area and fruiting points were greatly reduced by the flooding treatments. The cotton plants were more affected by the first than the second flooding. A greater depression in the various growth characteristics was found in the high organic matter soil than the low organic matter soil. The soils behaved differently in their interaction with the water treatments. With the control water treatment, cotton grown on the high organic matter soil produced more dry matter and assimilated more nitrogen but had a lower nitrogen concentration and apparent recovery of urea nitrogen than did cotton grown on the low organic matter soil. For the flooding treatments the low organic matter soil produced more dry matter and assimilated more nitrogen, but had a lower nitrogen concentration and a higher apparent recovery of urea nitrogen than did cotton grown on the high organic matter soil.The lower apparent recovery of urea nitrogen in the high organic matter soil during temporary flooding appears due mainly to higher loss of nitrogen by denitrification, although other mechanisms may be significant. The wider implications of the results in terms of field practice with irrigated cotton are discussed.

RESUMO - O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a composição bromatológica da forragem produzida a partir da parte aérea de plantas remanescentes da colheita de minimilho, em diferentes épocas de semeadura e idades de corte das plantas. O experimento foi realizado na fazenda experimental da UNIMONTES, localizada no município de Janaúba – MG. Os tratamentos foram dispostos em esquema fatorial 3 x 5, envolvendo três épocas de semeadura (agosto, dezembro e abril) e cinco idades de corte das plantas remanescentes (0, 8, 16, 24 e 32 dia após a colheita das espigas). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram formadas por quatro fileiras de milho, espaçadas de 0,9 m entre si, com 5,0 m de comprimento. As avaliações foram realizadas utilizando-se as duas fileiras centrais, desprezando-se 0,5 m de cada extremidade. A colheita das miniespigas foi realizada manualmente 2 dias após a emissão dos estilo-estígmas nas três épocas de plantio. As características avaliadas na forragem produzida a partir da parte aérea das plantas remanescentes foram o teor de proteína bruta, extrato etéreo, cinzas, matéria seca, matéria orgânica, fibra em detergente ácido, fibra em detergente neutro, lignina, hemicelulose, celulose e carboidratos não fibrosos. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que há um incremento, para lavouras semeadas em agosto e em abril, nos valores de matéria seca, matéria orgânica e FDN e uma redução nos valores de cinzas e FDA das plantas remanescentes com o passar do tempo.Palavras chave: forragem, milhos especiais, Zea mays.CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF BABY CORN IN DIFFERENT TIMES OF SOWING AND HARVESTING AGES OF REMAINING PLANTSABSTRACT - The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition of baby corn crops at different times of sowing and harvesting ages of remaining plants in the northern region of Minas Gerais. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of UNIMONTES, located in Janaúba-MG. The treatments were arranged in a 3 x 5 factorial, involving three sowing dates (August/2009, December/2009 and April/2010) and cutting ages of the remaining plants (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 days after ear harvesting). The experimental design was a randomized blocks with four replications. The plots were four 5 m long rows formed by maize spaced 0.9 m apart, using the two central rows to be examined. The chemical characteristics evaluated were: dry matter, organic matter content, ash, ether extract, crude protein, NDF, ADF, lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses and NFC. The results showed that there is an increase for crops sown in August and April, in the amounts of dry matter, organic matter and NDF and a reduction in the amounts of ash and FDA re-maining plants over time.Keywords: remaining plants, special maize, Zea mays.

An average dry matter yield structure (three cuts per growing season) in relation to agronomically valuable characteristics of six forage grass species and a year of herbage utilization was studied over the period of 1989&ndash;2002 in Lithuania. The most productive species of the first cut of two years of herbage utilization were Phleum pratense (P &lt; 0.01) and Festulolium hybrids (P &lt; 0.05) (average dry matter yield were 7.42 and 6.66 t/ha, respectively), moderately productive &ndash; Festuca pratensis, Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne (5.58, 5.42 and 5.20 t/ha), significantly lower (P &lt; 0.01) yielding was Poa pratensis (4.19 t/ha). During two years of herbage utilization Dactylis glomerata produced significantly (P &lt; 0.01) higher dry matter yield of aftermath &ndash; 7.30 t/ha. Other grass species were ranked in the following order: Festulolium hybrids 5.85 t/ha, Festuca pratensis 4.94 t/ha, Poa pratensis 4.57 t/ha, Lolium perenne 4.48 t/ha, and Phleum pratense 3.92 t/ha. Dactylis glomerata and Poa pratensis distinguished by the highest aftermath percent in the structure of the annual dry matter yield (57.7 and 52.2%). Phleum pratense formed an especially poor aftermath &ndash; only 34.6%. An average annual dry matter yield data analysis of two years of herbage utilization over the period of 1989&ndash;2002 showed that Dactylis glomerata and Festulolium hybrids were most productive (P &lt; 0.01) species.

Thirty grass populations were evaluated for dry matter yield, N content, P content, organic matter digestibility and winterhardiness. Of these populations, Agropyron cristatum, A. desertorum, A. elongatum, A. intermedium, A. trachycaulum, A. trichophorum, Bromus inermis and Elymus junceus are used extensively for forage crops and E. angustus is being commercialized at present. Of the remaining populations, A. smithii, E. cinereus, Oryzopis hymenoides, E. akmolinensis, E. curvatus, Roegneria sibiricus, and Stipa viridula × O. hymenoides do not appear to have any potential as forage crops; whereas A. sibiricum, E. virginicus, E. sibiricus, A. caespitosum × A. caninum, A. caespitosum × A. trachycaulum, A. cristatum × A. desertorum (4n) show some potential and should be investigated further.
