Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars were tested for yield at various populations in hillplots that had plants compactly clumped and in comparative hill and row plots. Results indicated that thinning to a uniform stand should be worthwhile in cases where population varies and that selection in hills for material to be grown in rows could be from 43 to 95% as effective as direct selection in row plots.Key words: Glycine max, soybean cultivars, plant density, yield, hill plots, selection

Giant ragweed populations in southwestern Ontario have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Glyphosate-resistant (GR) giant ragweed interference in field crops can lead to significant yield losses. Eleven field trials [five with preplant (PP) burndown only and six with PP burndown plus residual herbicides] were conducted in 2010 and 2011 on Ontario farms with GR giant ragweed to evaluate the efficacy of various PP herbicides applied prior to soybean planting. Glyphosate applied at the recommended field dose failed to adequately control GR giant ragweed. The PP herbicides 2,4-D ester, cloransulam-methyl and saflufenacil applied alone and with glyphosate provided 97–99, 68–100 and 71–94% control, respectively and resulted in soybean yields equivalent to the weed-free check. Combinations of glyphosate plus cloransulam-methyl or linuron controlled GR giant ragweed 8 wk after application (WAA), 75–95 and 95–98%, respectively. Residual control with glyphosate plus linuron resulted in soybean yield equivalent to the weed-free check. Based on these results, GR giant ragweed can be controlled prior to soybean planting in southwestern Ontario.

The effect of seeding rate (seeds per hectare) and row width (distance between rows) was examined for various adapted soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars in southwestern Ontario. Maple Arrow, Harosoy 63 and Harcor cultivars were grown in 18-, 35-, 53-, 71-, and 89-cm row widths seeded at 198 000, 395 000, and 593 000 seeds/ha during 1978 and 1979. The greatest yields were associated with the two narrowest row widths and the two highest seeding rates. Plant height, lodging, and bottom pod height varied mainly with seeding rate and cultivar. In another 2-yr study (1980 and 1981) Maple Arrow, Evans, S1346, Hodgson, A2575, and Harcor were grown at four row widths (18, 35, 53, and 71 cm) and two seeding rates (395 000 and 593 000 seeds/ha). A significant cultivar × row width interaction for yield occurred with Maple Arrow and Harcor showing the greatest yield response. Although a small seeding rate × cultivar interaction occurred, generally, seeding rates between 395 000 and 593 000 seeds/ha were adequate for all cultivars and all row widths.Key words: Glycine max (L.) The study of the effect of different plant spacing on runoff, soil erosion and soybean yield was conducted in Yandev, Gboko, Benue State, Nigeria. The site for the experiment was manually cleared of its natural vegetation. The experiment was performed on nine 2m x 1m micro plots of fine tilt and slope 3%. Boundaries of burnt bricks were built round each micro-plot to prevent the entry of runoff from adjacent plots and land. Collecting pits were excavated at the lower end of each micro-plot in the direction of the slope and plastic bucket collectors of 40 litres were installed to catch runoff and soil erosion sediments from the micro plots. The size of each micro plot was 2m2 . The experiment consisted of three treatments replicated three times. Treatment one (T1) with plant spacing of 20cm x 20cm, treatment two (T2) with plant spacing of 30cm x 30cm and treatment three (T3) with plant spacing of 40cm x 40cm. Runoff and soil erosion data were determined after each rain storm by measuring the runoff with a 1000ml measuring cylinder. The soil erosion was determined by measuring the oven dried soil erosion sediment with an electronic weighing balance. The soybean yield was determined by weighing the harvested and sun dried soybean grain at a moisture content of 12.6% using an electronic weighing balance. The values of the runoff from the different treatments are 202.50 m3 /ha for treatment one (T1) with plant spacing 20cm x 2cm, 221.00 m3 /ha for treatment two (T2) with plant spacing 30cmx30cm and 238.50 m3 /ha for treatment three (T3) with plant spacing 40cmx40cm. The mean soil erosion values were 16.87 kg/ha for treatment one (T1), 48.03 kg/ha for treatment two (T2) and 142.20 kg/ha for treatment three (T3).

Response of various soybean varieties [Glycine max (L.) Merril] againts peanut stripe potyvirus infection. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of PStV infection on soybean growth of various soybean varieties. Treatments were arranged in completely randomized design in split plot experiment with four replications. Main plots were virus-inoculated and uninoculated plants; subplots were eight soybean varieties (Wilis, Orba, MLG2521, Amerikana, Yellowbean, B3570, Slamet and Taichung). The results showed that infection decreased soybean growth indicated by reduction dry weight of soybean plant and reduction of soybean yield. Slamet variety compared to other varieties showed susceptible reaction indicated by the shortest incubation period (9,75 days), significant reduction of dry weigh of soybean plant, and the highest reduction of soybean yield (23,6%). Thaicung variety showed resistant reaction indicated by longest incubation period (14,3 days) and insignificant reduction of soybean growth and yield.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of application of manure on soybean yield on cocopeat and in order to get the appropriate dose for the soybean crop. Research was done using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which consists of 4 treatments and 3 replications. There are 12 unit of experiments with composition: A = control (without fertilizer), B = cocopeat + 100 g manure / polybag and C = cocopeat + 200 g manure / polybag, cocopeat + 300 g manure / polybag. The research revealed that the application of manure can increase the soybean yield on cocopeat

The legume seed coat is the site of sucrose unloading and the metabolism of imported ureides and synthesis of amino acids for the developing embryo. The cell types directly responsible for these functions in the seed coat are not known. We recently described a convex layer of tissue on the inside surface of the soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) seed coat that was termed “antipit” because it was in direct opposition to the concave pit on the abaxial surface of the cotyledon. Cone cells of the antipit contained numerous hypertrophied Golgi apparatus and laminated rough endoplasmic reticulum common to actively secreting cells. The initial report by Dzikowski (1936) described the morphology of the pit and antipit in G. max and found these structures in only 68 of the 169 seed accessions examined.
