The analytical mobility method for dynamically loaded journal bearings was presented, with the intent to include it in a general computational program, such as the dynamic analysis program, that has been developed for the dynamic analysis of general mechanical systems. An illustrative example and numerical results were presented, with the efficiency of the method being discussed in the process of their presentation.

The results of the study of the ballast layer consolidation after the work of ballast-tamping machines of different types are given in the article. The existing methods of determining the degree of consolidation of the ballast layer are analysed. The seismic method was improved by means of a complex dynamic and kinematic interpretation of the impulse response. For the dynamic interpretation with the use of statistical analysis, the features are selected so that they correspond to the degree of consolidation of the ballast layer. On the basis of researches, a device and software were developed that allow an automated evaluation of the ballast layer consolidation based on the kinematic and dynamic analysis of the measured impulse response. The measurements of the degree of the ballast layer consolidation after an operation of ballast-consolidation machines in different sequences allowed establishing the efficiency of the consolidation and the feasibility of the machines’ application.

Abstract Despite their much smaller individual contribution to the global counts of casualties and damage than their larger counterparts, earthquakes with moment magnitudes Mw in the range 4.0–5.5 may dominate seismic hazard and risk in areas of low overall seismicity, a statement that is particularly true for regions where anthropogenically-induced earthquakes are predominant. With the risk posed by these earthquakes causing increasing alarm in certain areas of the globe, it is of interest to determine what proportion of earthquakes in this magnitude range that occur sufficiently close to population or the built environment do actually result in damage and/or casualties. For this purpose, a global catalogue of potentially damaging events—that is, earthquakes deemed as potentially capable of causing damage or casualties based on a series of pre-defined criteria—has been generated and contrasted against a database of reportedly damaging small-to-medium earthquakes compiled in parallel to this work. This paper discusses the criteria and methodology followed to define such a set of potentially damaging events, from the issues inherent to earthquake catalogue compilation to the definition of criteria to establish how much potential exposure is sufficient to consider each earthquake a threat. The resulting statistics show that, on average, around 2% of all potentially-damaging shocks were actually reported as damaging, though the proportion varies significantly in time as a consequence of the impact of accessibility to data on damage and seismicity in general. Inspection of the years believed to be more complete suggests that a value of around 4–5% might be a more realistic figure.

This study summarizes different characterisation methods performed with new carbon fibres(vCF - virgin carbon fibres) for structural applications as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP)as well as fiber samples which have been treated under different conditions. These parameters consistof combinations of temperature (400-600 C) and dwell time (30 - 60 min) in an oxidising atmospherein order to provide a fundamental basis for the definition of possible recycling processes to regain thehigh value raw material, i.e. the carbon fibre, after the use-phase of the initial CFRP-structure. The investigationsthat were performed on vCF and secondary fibres (rCF - recycled CF) show in very goodagreement, that below 500 C almost no degradation of the fibre is visible, between 500 and 600 C arapid decrease in different physical and mechanical properties occurs and above 600 C a recovery ofthe fiber in terms of a secondary use in high performance structural context seems not to be feasible.The investigations that were performed consist of optical microscopy for the measurement of the fibrediameter, the deformation of the cross section and a statistical analysis. The second method appliedwas the characterization of the monofilament density, alongside to the breaking force and elongation,leading to the calculation of tensile strength and Youngs Modulus and further statistical analysis ofWeibull Modulus and its decrease over temperature.

This paper presents a rigorous study on the static and dynamic behavior of beams affected by cracks. The theory of distributions developed by Laurent Schwartz is adopted as it is particularly suitable for the treatment of discontinuities in functions for the deflection and derivatives of the beam. Thus, this paper presents a contribution towards the understanding and application of the theory of distributions to the static and dynamic behavior of structural elements affected by cracks. A simple, computationally efficient and accurate algorithm is developed for the problems of concern. Numerical results are presented for beams with two cracks. The algorithms developed for beams with discontinuities are obtained in a rigorous framework for static and vibration problems.

AbstractA Cambrian immigration event of paradoxidid trilobites has traditionally marked some regional lower–middle Cambrian boundaries in the Acado-Baltic subprovince (including Baltica and the Mediterranean and Avalonian margins of West Gondwana). The earliest paradoxidine species in Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula have been used as a chronostratigraphic link to support the definition of a common base for the Cambrian Series 3, but recent studies have proposed new species without revising previously established ones. This paper offers a morphological statistical analysis based on both linear measurement and landmark-based geometric morphometric approaches performed on the earliest paradoxinine trilobites sampled in the Anti-Atlas (Morocco) and the Iberian Chains (Spain). As a result, the diagnosis of Acadoparadoxides mureroensis is emended and several species recently erected in Morocco (A. cf. mureroensis, A. levisettii, A. ovatopyge and A. pampalius) are suggested as synonyms of A. mureroensis until 3D statistical analyses are available based on material preserved on carbonate or silica nodules. The first appearance of A. mureroensis in both areas can be provisionally used for regional correlation until homotaxic tests are checked.

Convex meshfree approximation with non-negative shape functions yields strict positive mass matrix and is particularly favorable for dynamic analysis. In this work, a kernel-enriched quadratic convex meshfree formulation with adjustable local approximation feature is presented. This formulation is built upon the generalized meshfree approximation with a relaxed quadratic reproducing condition. The resulting shape functions of the kernel-enriched quadratic convex meshfree formulation are presented in detail. The convergence behaviors for both static and vibration problems are discussed. Numerical results show that better accuracy can be achieved with the present formulation.
