In Slo-venia, regional development plans, which consist of regional development programs and subprograms, are in preparation for the time period that runs up to 2006. These programs shall have an important influence to the future functions of cities, their morphological struc-ture, functional role and social processes within them. Additionally, regional and subregio-nal centres may gain on their importance. Cities of Slovenia shall develop in accor-dance with the paradigm of sustainable development.

In the paper importance is given to the organization of the supply chain for a more efficient delivery of goods to city centers. Logistics activities are closely related because they depend on each other. The ultimate goal is to bring the product/goods to the end customer/consumer as soon as possible, on time, at the lowest cost, in perfect condition and in the appropriate quantity. The mutual coordination and cooperation of all participants in the supply chain can result in a satisfied end-user/customer. The development of information – telecommunication technologies – will greatly affect the future development and efficiency of the supply chain by finding new transport solutions that would mostly affect city centers. The paper mostly emphasizes the context of the delivery conditions in Rijeka’s city center with a proposal for the location of a future centralized distribution center.

In the conditions of the modern competitively developing tourism, the problems of sustainable development of a tourist destination, the need for development of alternative types of tourism are economic and social processes of increasing importance. Moreover, they focus on some of the most important changes and problems in the way of development of modern tourism. Where are these intersections and what are they due to? In what sense are the phenomena of wine tourism, sustainable development and tourist destination becoming more and more interdependent processes? How is the national and regional development of wine tourism and its sustainable development reflected in the mirror of international tourism, in the conditions of "globality" and "locality"?

The purpose of this work is to identify some issues of current sustainable development process in polyethnic border regions of Ukraine. The need to involve various domestic stakeholders (like local, regional and national authorities, businesses, households, education and research institutions, NGOs, regional development agencies) and representatives from neighboring countries in elaboration and implementation of sustainable development programs in border regions is substantiated. Conducted survey helped to identify the position of local NGOs representatives, involved into the different regional development projects, about the priority directions of sustainable development and obstacles for their realization in the polyethnic region. Certain peculiarities of sustainable development related to regional polyethnicity have been identified during the survey. Certain ways to increase the involvement of various ethnic groups in process of sustainable development in border regions have been proposed.

This paper provides a background to the on-going discourse on post-2015 global development agenda. It mentions key points from the UN Secretary General’s report on MDG progress and the process of formulating the future development agenda. The recommendations of the High Level Panel on post-2015 agenda and the work of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) are examined from the perspective of Education for Rural Transformation (ERT). It is concluded that the premise and rationale of ERT has received scant attention in the future development agenda discourse. The arguments regarding the pertinence of ERT in combating poverty and promoting sustainable development are noted, drawing on the recent UNESCO- INRULED study on this topic.

The need for regional development banks (RDB) is a straightforward question that does not have a straightforward answer. The authors assess the arguments claiming that RDB are called to play a substantive role—in fact an increasingly substantive role—in future development. They summarize these arguments in the following hypothesis: if RDB did not exist, we should re-invent them. This hypothesis is assessed against a critical developmental challenge affecting today’s world and most likely to remain in the future: the massive mobilization of resources required for financing of huge gaps in sustainable infrastructure investments that exist in the developing world. This exercise is followed by a discussion on what conditions need be in place for RDB to be truly playing a pivotal role in confronting such challenge—and perhaps others—in the future.

Old towns is like living fossil which has accumulated rich historical connotations; the one carrying the history of a region’ political, economic, cultural and ecological changes as well as the formative art created by collective labors and wisdoms of generations. The preservation of ancient Chinese dwellings and old towns began late; many historical architectures and traditional country fairs are forcibly removed during the transformation of old cities and towns, thus ancient towns with their original historical looks are becoming less and less. In comparison, the preservation and development of old western towns started earlier than china, with rich experience, they offer good examples for china, especially the successful developing way: eco-tourism. By comparing the preservation and development of traditional Chinese towns’ landscape features to that of western ones, this paper points out that the future development of old towns rely on proper handling of the relation between preserving and the feasibility of renewing, so as to maintain the landscape features of old towns in the course of sustainable development.

Abstract CENTRE AND PERIPHERY IN BAVARIA? POLARIZATION TENDENCY IN A GROWING GERMANY REGION The equality of living conditions is one of the most important aims of regional planning in Germany. Politicians tend to describe significant structural differences between the so-called “centres” and the “peripheries” in rather broad terms, especially when referring to Eastern and Western Germany. However, in individual successful federal states which are themselves perceived as centres, such as Bavaria, regional disparities seem largely overcome. Yet, a closer analysis of the structures prevalent in Bavaria reveals the existence of considerable divergences in economy and the distribution of population in this federal state, too. These disparities will become sharper in the future. Despite Bavaria’s general economic power, only a limited equality can be achieved through instruments of regional development.
